Computer Questions Not Worth Their Own Thread II

Actually it uses the inner sectors first. Usually the VTOC is the innermost sectors, and then the CD is used from the inside out so that it can read the disc faster.

Then why scratches on the outside the worst?

Also what's a VTOC? Googled it and got some error messages and stuff on how to burn boot discs.

EDIT: Got it. Table of contents.

Why does the school board block a lot of stuff on Linux? They don't want students to get ideas? :mischief:

1. Because they can. You're using their internet connection and their computers on their terms.
2. Because I doubt Linux is highly relevant to what you should be working on. Do your schoolwork.

Except that I have no schoolwork to do. I'm caught up on it.

Why would they care about that? If they open up too much, you might not do your work.

My mom's freaking out and having fits because I installed Linux, because she doesn't like it. (My thoughts: WTH? It's my computer!) What should I do now?

Maybe I should put Windows back just to get her to SHUT UP.

Keep it. Maybe if she cant figure out how to mess with your computer, she wont. Make sure you have a strong password for the system, maybe even put in a boot password.

I remember sometimes when I worried about my mom messing with my computer I'd pop a live CD in. Maybe I should start doing that again.

Question: I have a highly disorganized "downloads" folder. Because I stockpile installers in case they go missing later (either the site goes down or a working version isn't available for download anymore). What are some logical categories to put them in? I don't want them too narrow or too broad.

EDIT: I've got a huge variety of programs.

ANOTHER EDIT: Windows, of course. I'm currently booted into Vista just to get stuff ready. What made me think about it is how neat and organized the Ubuntu add/remove thingy is.

YET ANOTHER EDIT: Before, I did have vague categories but I let it get into a mess.

Go to almost any freeware/download site and look at the way they organize downloads, draw inspiration from that.

download.com
go there and look at their categories.

Thanks, I'll take a look at several. Why didn't I think of it before?

Is there a list somewhere of all the expansion packs they have planned for Sims 3?

Chances are, if you google it and can't find anything, more than likely that info hasn't been released.

What do you call a ~? I tried googling it but it didn't work. :(

Thanks. :)

Question: I was doing some googling about Vista. Apparently, when you reinstall there's this script you can make to automatically move the user folders to a different location. Which I thought would be useful. But I couldn't find how to actually create it. Any idea?

Stupid question: Do computers hate me? We have three computers, a laptop with vista, a desktop with vista and my desktop computer with XP and Fedora dual-boot. The only computer out of these three that has serious problems is mine. It's always crashing, and I can't remember the last whole day when Firefox worked properly. My computer is the newest and the best one, but it seems to be the slowest one, and the others don't crash nearly so much. Oh and a few games on my computer don't work. Spore seems to miss half of the graphics, and Civ IV has some problems as well. One explanation could be my heavy usage. I have a ton of programs and I have a ton of tabs open at once (partially because my internet connection is SLOW). It's quite weird because XP is the better one, and vista has been called slow and unreliable, when in our family it's the other way.

Sorry for the groaning, I'm just pretty frustrated. If you have any advise, please share it.
