Congratulations to CFC for getting us FREE DLC! (the mongols)

Should have been in the game to begin with.

As someone else said, it's just a marketing ploy. What better way to calm the masses than by giving away "free" DLC. This was obviously decided pre-release.

I'll take it though. :D

Actually.. The Mongols had not even been started pre-release.

Is that unexpected? I paid for Babylon when the game came out.

They should have integrated Babylon to both versions from the outset.

I'm not sure what you mean. Offer it for release immediately? Should it be $10 on release or cheaper? Shouldn't the fact that I'm paying a premium justify the ability to get exclusive use during a brief period of time?

alright back to the mongols, which is what this thread is supposed to be about... where do you go to find the mongol scenario?

In the same menu which has the 'Play now' and 'Set up game' options, there should now also be a 'scenario' option.

They should have integrated Babylon to both versions from the outset.

It's clear why they did it, if you shop around online you can get most PC games for a huge discount these days. The major retailers just needed an incentive to make you pay their price. I got my hard copy for less then 30 sterling (27?). It wouldn't be fair to those people did pay extra if they only had a month of exclusivity.

empire total war used this idea, with a token free unit depending on where you bought it, it added very little to the game but it was kinda neat.

While its always good to have more civs, i don't miss the Babylonians, never played as them in any civ. If it had been rome it would be a different story...

I don't think i'd buy it unless it had another scenario too. Does it?

I believe 2k is still running on an outdated business plan. Truth is, nowadays gamers like updates, and they demand it on a periodic basis. The new DotA2 is comming out (some day in the next few Valve Years) and they've already announced they'll follow Icefrog's "way of doing it" (for those who don't know, he's the current keeper of the DotA franchise).

This is not new to the genre. Heroes of Newerth, a game I've spent more than 1400 hours playing (check my xFire 'interlider'), follows the same path. Monthly, sometimes even weekly updates to the game, together with active participation from the admins and game developers (true that, even the game Owner, Marc "Maliken" Deforest is always active in the game forums), makes it for unprecedented replayability.

Facts are, the gaming industry is changing towards a more niche designed, less cult, mass oriented way and the industry has to evolve. New games already showcase periodic updates, with balance tweaks and numerous, post-release updates (in the case I quoted above, in 6 months of release we've had 6 new heroes - each hero representing in CiV a new civilization, per say) and active community management, with devs and admins taking the community seriously.

Right now, it's been a week since the release of the last patch, which broke the diplomacy of the game. If this were such community that other concurrent games have, and this were such devs as those in them communities, that breaking of the game wouldn't stand the test of time for longer than some hours, even a day. And not to keep blowing S2 Games' horn, which I've been doing all post long, but to actually use as a comparison, they are an Indie company, with no big investors or venture capitalists, or anything like a 2 decades franchise on their hands. Shame on 2K.

Well, about the d2d thing. I bought through them, and in my games & files list, "Civilization V 1st DLC" still has a non-functional "preorder" button next to it. I'm assuming that if the dlc they were giving me was already out, it would say "Download" instead.

1. Neither $5 or $10 is enough to even bat an eye over. You spend that at McDonalds on something gone in 15 minutes. If you enjoy the game, you will pay the cash and not whine.
$10 at mcdonalds? even I don't eat that much.
2. Those of you who bought from Direct2Drive. You probably did it because of your dislike (mostly unwarranted) of Steam. Well now you're not as special.
Actually, I bought it there because I had a $5 off AND got civIII for free AND got the free dlc thing. i hade no hate towards steam until after i got the game.
stop making assumptions.

The D2D DLC is said to be released in December.

Italian civilization wouldn't make sense. they should should add Spain. soon.

The Mongolia DLC will be downloaded automatically from Steam if you run the game while Steam is in online mode.

The Babylonian DLC can be purchased on Steam. (Try searching the steam store for 'babylon')

I had totally missed this news (hadn't really been playing on my PC much in the past couple weeks). Imagine my surprise yesterday when I fired up Civ 5 yesterday and found I could select Genghis Khan!

This is awesome...the Mongols have always been one of my favorite civs to play as, going all the way back to Civ 2. Glad to see they are now an option to play as.
