Could banning pointy knives reduce crime in long term?

I carried a knife for a while in junior high precisely because it was verboten.

The moral, I suppose, is that teens are fools.

That's quite true. But I feel there is a difference between kids who carry knives for these reasons, namely to look cool (which I am sure you did ) and those who are just hard nuts who want to use these things to see some blood. And I don't accept arguments that some kids are genetically disposed to being keen on the sight of blood. There are other more potent reasons, if this argument is valid anyway.

I think the looking cool motivation can be excluded on the grounds I never let anyone know I carried one, and the seeing blood one on that that every time I drew blood in junior high I used my bare hands.

That IS reasonable. Look at crime statistics for inner city gangs and then compare the number of drive-by stabbings with the number of drive-by shootings.

The point isn't that shootings outnumber stabbings, or that guns are 'worse' than knives, it's that there's a very slippery slope leading from gun control to pointy-knife control, and what happens when you ban knives and they start using sticks? Fortunately, someone's already on the case for preventing drive-by stabbings:
Australia moves on to swords, crossbows...

The banning of one thing after another should either be left alone completely or continued to its logical conclusion, and I don't want to have to pay the tax bill for exporting all of our sticks and stones.

Well, if the federal government ever becomes a dictatorship, good luck defending your freedoms with shotguns and handguns. Even a bazooka wouldnt be of much use.

Actually, a ragtag bunch of insurgents seem to be giving the World's.Greatest.Military quite a run for it's money. And the insurgents are not nearly as armed as American citizens.

I've said it before, but it is worth repeating: We do not need gun laws if we keep violent people locked up. MOST violent crimes are committed by repeat offenders. These people are incorrigible.

Actually, this year or the next there will be a referendum about banning guns in the nation. I wonder what the point is, since 98.4% of the gun-related crimes are commited with illegal and unregistered guns anyway.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't most of the illegal guns STOLEN from legal owners? If it was harder to obtain guns legaly*, a lot less guns would fall in criminal hands.

* In Norway, it is not forbidden to own weapons. But if you want a gun or a sword/knife with a blade longer than 30cm you need to go to the police to get a license. For the license you will need a good criminal record and you need to document that you have legitimate reasons for it.

Personally I think this system works very well.

Thats true, and dont doubt for a minute that our own violent, homegrown rightwing, extremists are studying the insurgents tactics and taking notes.

also as far as insurgents go, the US Marines learned in nicaragua ( incidentially where the .45 came from) that a group using "geurilla" tactics, can tie up a force 7-10 X's its size.
And its not hard to get a stolen gun.
Now this is a true story. A friend of mine and I went to a city wich i shall not name. and we were down town. He went one way and i went the other to see who could get a gun "off the street" first. He won. it took him 8 min to buy a glock that had nary a serial number. took me 15 for a .45 colt.
