Crime - foreigners - statistics

I would like to point out that its not poor people who commit more total crimes.

It's poor people more likely to go to prison for them. Upper class people commit upperclass crimes.

50% of the UK prison population is black, though they only form 2% of the population in general.

Does this mean that blacks are 25 times more likely to commit a crime?

Or 25 times more likely to be caught?

Or that the judiciary is 25 times more likely to prosecute, convict and imprison a black criminal than they would a white person committing the same crime?

The bare statistic supports any one of those suppositions; statistics can be - and frequently are - used to 'prove' any number of assertions.

Winner, being a student of the political sciences (at least, I think you are), you should know how intellectually irresponsible this sort of thing is. I think its quite clear that it isn't the "foriegn-ness" that compells people to commit crimes more (clearly, if you moved to America, or if I moved to Brazil, we wouldn't suddenly be compelled towards criminal action), so parading this conclusion of yours, like so many other posters have mentioned, is misleading.

Given your rhetoric, I think I, and most of us, can see where you're really going with this. If you're really interested in crime, you might want to pick up studies, again, like others have mentioned, that compare with class, ability to obtain strong legal counsel, vocation, family structure, etc etc.

Sorry, that just always irks me ;), here's an excellent quip to make up for it.

Once at a social gathering, Gladstone said to Disraeli, "I predict, Sir, that you will die either by hanging or of some vile disease". Disraeli replied, "That all depends, sir, upon whether I embrace your principles or your mistress."
