Crusader Kings 2

Does anyone have experience with CTDs in multiplayer games, especially later into saves? I'm wondering if it is just that the game becomes unstable over time.
I haven't played CKII MP, but usually Paradox games suffer from OOS errors in MP more then CTDs.

Try a later start date. Most people don't want to because they're afraid they won't "experience the full game", whatever that means, but is it really that bad to even move up by even a couple of decades? Particularly since most people sort of lose interest in their games within a century to a century and a half.

I've heard that even starting in ~1077 (or 1081, or ~1100) is a much more interesting and balanced start than the 1066 start. Basically, the Byzantines, Fatimids, and Seljuks - three of the bigger blobbers - are weakened, or at least weaker than in 1066; parts of Spain are already united, meaning they're stronger and able to resist the Islamic incursions - especially the silly Fatimid invasions (which don't happen as often because, as said, the Fatimids are weakened); and so on.

Other start dates also have interesting scenarios and challenges that you won't find in the rather imbalanced 1066 start date. As I mentioned earlier (I think), the 1307-1337 start dates are perfect for the Balkans/Anatolia and Italy. The former because you have plenty of Muslim, Orthodox, and Catholic states duking it out in the region, including a declining Byzantine Empire and a rising Ottoman DYnasty. The latter because you are finally free of the HRE's yoke and it's basically an Ireland-type free-for-all, except on continental Europe and pretty much all the late-game technology.

I usually start in the 1081 start, simply because its now a bookmark, and the blobs are weakened. Although in my last game I saw the Fatimids take Constantinople by 1110, so...

Just got CKII. Tried a first game as Burgundy in the HRE. Joined the Independence faction under Bohemia, got curbstomped by HRE. Avoided it the next time, when Provence was the leader, got curbstomped by Provence. France DoWed the HRE, and some Thuringian princess claimed my title. I think I'm about to get usurped. :(

On to Dublin!

There hasn't been anything about the new DLC they said was going to hit around new year yet, has there? I wonder why?

There was a fake DLC leak on the PI forums earlier today (some guy photoshopped the Legacy of Rome leak to display "Wrath of Odin" instead of "Legacy of Rome"), which seemed to excite a lot of people (in good and bad ways). If I remember correctly PI said they'll be releasing the next DLC sometime in January. Since it's gonna be a big one (like Sword of Islam - even bigger, maybe), it's likely they'll have 3-5 dev diaries for it like they did for SoI, meaning they'll announce it sometime this month, i.e. December.

If it does end up being Pagans (which the general majority of PI forum members are predicting), I hope they don't do some quasi-fantasy Viking thing (which I doubt, though, since the Norse Pagans only occupy about 2 duchies in-game anyways), and give Paganism and its decline in the face of Christianity/Islam the respect and care it deserves.

As long as they don't get HREaten (TM) in the (inevitable) pagan DLC when it comes (whether or not it's this one), it'll be a success in my eyes.

The new DLC will not be Pagans... It's not silly like the Aztec one either...

What would it be then? The only likely possibility would be Republics, as the devs have indicated on the PI forums (if I recall) that the DLC is something that has been requested many times, and the only ones that have been requested frequently are Republics are Pagans. Republics would be more difficult to handle since they have to figure out a way to handle succession and keeping things within the dynasty, so I think pagans is more likely at this point since it'd be easier to add in new game mechanics.

Theocracies are also a common suggestion. Usually either in conjunction with more fleshed out religious mechanics like a college of cardinals or with republics.

Pagans could be fine if they do lots of stuff for the Tengrii and the Baltic ones, although sadly I imagine it would be a lot of Norse stuff.

Yeah, TBH I'd rather see a Romuva-focused expansion than a Norse-focused one, although I imagine if they were targeting sales they'd focus it on the Norse.

I also agree if they do do pagans there's a high chance of Norse stuff, but I'm hoping that they'll throw in the Norse stuff along with the Baltic and Finnic pagans in a DLC that focuses on northern pagans as a whole, and then they'll have a separate relatively big DLC for the steppe pagans (nomad mechanics and all), and mini-DLC (SI-size, but not the fantasy) for West African pagans and Zoroastrians.

Ideally.

Of course, they could just be doing one big pagan lumping-together, which may be bad if they don't pull it off right.

Or they could just flesh out all the pagans.

Yeah, they kinda were. They lost to Christianity, of all things. All they had to do was say "Oh and now we have afterlife. Just like the Norse."

Doing some Neo-Pagan revival thing might be stupid (though fun), but having interesting mechanics for the conversion of pagans to Christianity/Islam isn't. Ideally, I think a pagan DLC should be focusing on the latter - perhaps have it as some sort of slider-like mechanic where pagan rulers slowly convert themselves, their nobles, and eventually their populace to a new belief system, and balancing that between traditional ideas.

Man, the Holy Roman Emperor is kind of a jerk. I'm trying to found duchies so I can found the Kingdom of Italia, but he keeps founding them first and giving them to himself!

Any tips on usurping the titles I need?

You can either kill him and steal the duchies in the ensuing civil war, or abuse plots. I last played before factions were a thing, so maybe you can use one of them to do stuff.

I just play a late start (~1300 and after) so there's no HRE to worry about. :p
