CTIV-3: Tokugawa by Sea

I will try and take it tonight. If someone can take it before I post a got it, go ahead.

So are we all happy to go the diplo route? It's not my strong point so I will have to try and be very considerate in my diplomatic dealings.

It seems there is a good chance that Elizabeth will be our opponent. She dislikes us a lot. May want to watch our back with her.

I will try and cultivate relations with JC, Alex and GW.

What are the best ways to help relations? Gifts and not trading with their worst enemies and religion?

Not having a different religion always helps (won't be an issue since we're about to be Free Religion).
Cancelling with others/Declaring whenever they ask us to will help as well.
Gifts are ok, but don't go nuts

So we are changing tack and going for diplomatic. To do that we need to get to Mass Media so i will beeline towards that with a detour for Economics first.

The current diplomatic situation is as follows: JC +3, Alex +10, HC +8, Monte +6, Lizzy +1, Cyrus -3, Washington +3 and Hatty +10.
From this list, it seems that Alex, Hatty and HC are our closest friends with Monte not to bad either.
Alex's worst enemy is Cyrus (-6)
HC's worst enem is Washington (-4)
Hatty's worst enemies are JC (-2) and Monte (-2) but Monte is furious.
I have assumed that the lowest score is her worst enemy.. maybe I have that backwards... hmm. I will check later. Too tired now.

Turn 1 (1702AD)
Liberalism is in. Next up is Economics which is due in 4. Was about to change to Free Religion and Free Speech but decided to wait for economics and change once.
Moscow finishes it's Observatory and starts building a Lighthouse to get some more food.
Changed research to 90% (@-64gpt) for a few shots to get Economics in 3 turns. Will turn it back when it's in.

Turn 2 (1704AD)
Osaka finishes a grenadier and starts a university for a research boost.
Rostov finishes an ironclad and starts a observatory. Same as uni for +25% but 20 turns instead of 27, we don't need the culture here.
Tadmekka finishes a lighthouse and starts a granary to get it's growth moving. It's currently only size 1.
Send the ironclad out to protect the fish. Not sure what else to do with these things as the move so slow.

Turn 3 (1706AD)
Kyoto finishes it's drydock and starts building a Confucian monastery for the small research boost.
Walata finishes a theatre and starts building a library.

Turn 4 (1708AD)
Economics comes in. I set the next target to Scientific Method.
We revolt to the three free's. Free Speech, Free Market and Free Religion. And there is a fourth three...

Three turns of revolution! Oh well. I think they will all provide some benefit so hit revolution.

Turn 5 (1710AD)
Still 2 turns of anarchy

Turn 6 (1712AD)
1 turn to go

IBT: Lizzy comes asking for Chemistry in return for nationalism and 270 gold. Not a bad deal but I will decline as I am unsure of the effect on our relationships with our more friendly neighbours and don't need her to attack me with grenadiers.

Turn 7 (1714AD)
The three free's come in and I reset research to 80% (+45gpt).

IBT: Now GW comes asking for the same deal as lizzy but for only 170 gold this time. Hmmm... he's HC's worst enemy (to be checked later  ) so again I say no.

Turn 8 (1716AD)
Moscow finishes a lighthouse and moves onto a university for more research.
Yaroslavl' finishes building something and starts a granary for growth. This place will grow very quickly as it has an abundance of food.

Turn 9 (1718AD)
Kyoto finishes the Confucian Monastery just before scientific method obsoletes it. Maybe that wasn't the best choice I made.
A bank completes in tokyo and a university starts.
Yakutsk completes and ironclad, which goes out to protect some fish, and starts building some fishing boats to work the clams.

Turn 10 (1720AD)
Scientific method due in 2.

The diplomatic situation at 1720AD is: JC +4 (+1), Alex +11 (+1), HC +7 (-1), Monte +5 (-1), Lizzy +2 (+1), Cyrus -4 (-1), Washington +4 (+1) and Hatty +10 (nc).

The change to free religion had a very small effect and has even made some relations worse. Our 3 best friends need to be worked on. Maybe a fourth if it doesn't get too complicated.

And finally, heres the save

Actually, that's a good move. You can still build Missionaries after Sci Meth, so we can spread Confucianism internal to cities with happiness issues (Free Religion gives us +1 Happy per religion)

Hmmm... he's HC's worst enemy (to be checked later )

You can check diplomacy when an AI approaches you. The game will let you click on the diplomacy icon and take you to the screen to review.

Does anyone like Cyrus? If no one (important) like Cyrus, we should go to war, even if semi-phony (which probably wouldn't be the case with our army). We could then bring as many other civs into the battle as possible, especially as we near the UN. This will give us a relations boost that may just give us the victory. Not to mention, any extra cities we take is extra population that gets us nearer the diplo win. Can someone check the save (I'm at work) and see what percentage of pop we have?

Here's Cyrus' situation: Last time I played, Julius Caesar hadn't even met him yet :crazyeye:

What would be the point of starting a phony war, though? Cyrus is going to be tough because he's stockpiled about 20 troops in each city (since he has nothing else to do with them). I think we're better off waiting for someone else (like Hattie, who loves us) to go to war with Cyrus and then joining in when asked. I don't think attacking Cyrus (phony or otherwise) will give us a diplo boost, only a penalty (with Cyrus, and any friends he has).

Is this likely to happen? Neither are aggressive personalities if I recall...

I honestly don't know. I've never played this large a map before, so with plenty of space it's possible they won't fight one another.

In order to win diplo, we need the following:
lots of friendly relationships
lots of population

To get both, we need to be a happy population. I would say avoid war unless it comes to us or we need it to win a (backdoor) diplomatic victory. Keep everyone happy, make all possible trades even if they don't benefit us as much (although I wouldn't give too much away). Build all the health/happy buildings where necessary to keep cities growing. Our emphasis should be on growth. If we want to expand more, there are plenty of empty islands about (plus we can place a settler where I razed that Barb city) ... use settlers from cities that can no longer grow.

there are plenty of empty islands

Yea I notices this but forgot about it because I wasn't thinking diplo. I bet we could seriously boost our pop but we need to do it fast because others (if they haven't already) will get astro and go settler mad. The AI does not stop until every last drop of land is taken.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. We have an established empire already, and we're beelining for Mass Media. United Nations will be ours, but even if it wasn't, we'd be in the top two.

Now, if the other AIs go Settler-mad, it'll do [EDIT] three things: 1, it'll cost them, which will slow down their tech research for the short to mid term. 2, it'll slow down the growth of existing cities, which will slow down their pop growth in the short term, maybe the mid term if the new cities aren't resource-heavy*. Since our goal is to win the game in the midterm, this will help us. 3, if they're building settlers, they're not building soldiers or universities.

Also, if our allies grow their population, that can't hurt us too bad, right?

*Any new cities we build must be designed for quick growth. They should have 1 or 2 food resources and plenty of grassland (which we'll cottage if we can't farm). Granary should be the first build, and any workboats should come from other cities if feasible.

You can treat this as my got it, I'll play by Thursday night - although it still may be 5 turns (maybe 10 if I'm lucky).

OBJ: I'm forcing a rescinding of this "got it" ... I should be able to play tonight, and don't forget you have CTIV-5 to play ;). Only grab the game when you're ready to play.

That is good to know!

I just press F4 and the diplomatic window pops up over the top. How do you tell who is who's worst enemy though?

By the way, our cities are very happy and healthy. We have so many resources available that the buildings are redundant.

We can concentrate on structures that will boost our research capability first. And of course a few soldiers every now and then to not let our power slip.

That's hard to tell. You can select a leaderhead and see who's Furious with them, maybe that's considered their worst enemy? Or whoever they're most Annoyed with?
