Which two mountains are in competition for the worlds tallest mountain?

Extra credit: Which one holds the title right now?

Is one of them that volcano that is beside the sea and so begins many miles below sea level? I can't remember its name nor where it is but do remember that people were arguing for and against it being the largest mountain in the world some time ago as its total height was larger than Everest's.
This is of no use to your question, but I'd be pleased if someone could tell me the name of the mountain. :)

No, that is not what I'm referring to (since I've never heard of that one). Both of these mountains are land-based. I should clarify a bit: the mountian that was contending for the title of worlds tallest mountain only briefly held the title. The "extra credit" part of my question was a bit tounge-in-cheek.

The mountain Duke is referring to is Manau Loa, the 13000 foot mountain in Hawaii that actually climbs more than 30000 feet off the ocean's floor.

I believe the answer is Mt. Everest and K2 (Godwin-Austen). K2 held the title for a little while because of satellite data that proved to be wrong. Mt. Everest is the current holder I believe, at 29028 feet.
