Well, you got the first part right. The brigade was composed of the 2nd, 6th, and 7th Wisconsin Volunteers; the 19th Indiana Volunteers; and the 24th Michigan Volunteers. The only all-Western brigade in the Army of the Potomac, the soldiers wore the dress black hat of the regular army rather than the usual blue kepis.
The brigade suffered the highest percentage of soldiers killed in combat, and mostly on McPherson's Ridge at Gettysburg. On that day, they were commanded by Brig. Gen. Solomon Meredith, in the division of Brig. Gen. James Wadsworth, in the I Corps of Maj. Gen. John Reynolds; and after whose death at the beginning of battle, was replaced by Maj. Gen. Abner Doubleday as the senior division general.
