Current (SVN) development discussion thread

Since this is non-commercial, I'd say Leoreth should just message the author and ask whether he can use his Baba Yetu arrangement, offering to place his name in the credit section. If he agrees, problem solved.

I just upgraded to the SVN version. I noticed that a large population causes techs to cost a lot more. However, this seems to be extreme. I played as Babylon, but WB'ed in a lot of resources and buildings, so by year 0 or so, I had one city of size 40, but no other cities.

I then checked the tech costs, and discovered that Future Tech would cost me 65,000:science:!
My guess is that the tech-costs scale based on actual population, not city size. Since population grows exponentially with regard to city size, this drastically damages huge cities. For example, my size-40 city had a real population of over 50,000,000, which is 2500 times more than a size-3 city.

Wait, moderator can see edit history of a post?
Oh by the way, I can't. I've read your post on mobile, but didn't have time to reply then.

Population doesn't affect tech costs at all anymore, being tech leader however does.

The Aztec population goal is really hard right now, as Tenochtitlan is not a good spot for growing a city. I can grow it to around 15 pop in 1520 AD, assumably without being hit by a plague(which in many cases would happen). But then I'm facing competition from cities like London, which I can't possibly win.

Also, don't you think there should be a health bonus nerf on the colonizing European civs? London reaching pop 18 pre-colonization is one of the evidence.

Moving floodplains under Tenochtitlan next to it would increase amount of food by two, but I guess it is meant to be there by flavor reasons.

I see you mined the countryside. This is a mistake, you should research machinary and build windmills. Moreover, don't chop the forests, you need the health bonusses.
If you face plague after 1520 you should be able to reach a 16 or even 17 population by 1520. If you face the plague before, then you can reach 13 to 14. So a 15-pop Delhi may be dangerous for your goal. 18-pop London is just unbeatable, but there is a python code that counters this.

I just encountered the Euro civs in 1495 AD, so there was a plague. In a previous try I reached 15 pop but on 1520 AD there went the plague which ruined my effort.

Maybe I shouldn't send units to meet the European ships? I did it to avoid conquerors.

And about Windmill and Machinery, yeah that's a better idea.

New commit:
- there need to be at least 6 civilizations alive for the tech leader penalty to take effect
- new Ethiopian UP: +10% combat strength for land units within own borders
- war success stability is now based on war weariness
- no expansion penalties for controlling foreign cores
- increased influence of foreign culture on expansion penalties
- foreign culture counts double in their respective cores for expansion penalties
- new Persian UP: no expansion penalty from foreign culture

The expansion stability change was made in light of the fact that foreign cores are basically everywhere these days, so you shouldn't get a flat penalty from them. Remember that foreign culture of dead civs still remains, but generally it's now possible to completely mitigate this effect over time by building up your own culture.

10% strength? How will that have much of an effect? I'd think at least 15%.

Thank you thank you!!! Finally. Babylon is more viable!!! That means India is less viable, but that is fine as well I guess. Also, the stability stuff is nice.

Is there an estimate of when 1.12 will be out?

Nope.

This would make my alternate history New World gameplay wickedly futuristic.

Are minor civs considered? Just to make sure.
For the tech leader stuff? I don't think they are, but I'll check again.

Okay, another thing I'd like to put up for discussion:

What do you think about making Scandinavia a separate continent? This would stop the Viking AI on mostly moving their units via Finland and Russia (and capturing Kiev so often) and using ships more. I think we would also see scenarios with Russian or German controlled Scandinavia less often.

That sounds pretty cool. You should also add Zealand as a land bridge (with rivers around it).
