INDIA RETURNS TO SPACE

Sarabhai I leaves a small launch pad in southern India

Bangalore, Republic of India - In the early morning of February 23rd, a manned rocket left a launch pad headed for orbit. After the all Indian crew of Sarabhai I, named after the father of the Indian Space Research Organization, reached their destination they addressed the nation, which was broadcast worldwide. The crew is expected to return to Earth early next month.

The launch, which was televised across the world, caused a variety of responses. The Indians, understandably, were ecstatic. In the United States and European Federation however, many people saw the accomplishment as their own failure. Despair swept NASA and the ESA as they realized the Indians beat them in the new Space Race. Arguments erupted between government officials and space agency heads in an attempt to place blame for the loss. Meanwhile, most of the world seems to be overcome with hope. The success of India has proven that the era of the old powers is over. If an underdog could beat the Americans, who seemed to dominate space for so long, who knows what they could do.

THE SAUDI PICKLE

armorandoilfires.jpg

Damaged UIR armor retreats to the safety of Al-Hufūf

Jiddah, Occupied Saudi Arabia - What was considered a near disaster for the UIR last month has completely turned around as the Saudis find themselves in a very dire situation. In the west, the bulk of the Army of the Nile broke through Saudi lines after heavy shelling and naval bombardment. The bulk of the army moved south after the broken Saudis while a smaller contingent quickly occupied Medina with relatively little resistance. Upon reaching Jiddah, the Army of the Nile found nearly no resistance and discovered that all Saudi forces on the west coast had retreated to the town of Abha, near the Yemeni border. The Army of the Nile has secured the cities of Jiddah and Mecca as well the surrounding area well enough for the Mediterranean Fleet to dock. The army now stands at a crossroads; they could either continue south to finish off the Saudis in the west, or they could move east towards Riyadh and support the Army of Babylon.

In the east, the Army of Babylon pulled off what can only be called a tactical miracle, managed to force the Saudis into corner after nearly being surrounded. Noticing the Saudis were about to surround them, an offensive was launched against the portion of the front furthest from the flanking force. An armored thrust towards Qatar broke through the eastern portion of the line around the same time as the western portion collapsed towards Ad Dammām. The Army of Babylon then circled behind the Saudis and took up the enemy’s old positions as Ad Dammām was liberated. The situation now finds the Army of Babylon between the undefended Saudi capital of Riyadh and the largest remaining part of the Saudi army, in a bombed out Ad Dammām, with their backs to the Persian Gulf. While the UIR now has air superiority, Saudi destroyers in the Persian Gulf pose a serious threat to an advancing Army of Babylon.

CHINESE INVADE KYRGYZSTAN AND FALTER

kyrgyzmechinfantry.jpg

Kyrgyz mechanized infantry takes up positions near Naryn

Kashi, Republic of Greater China - In another display of military power, the Chinese Army invaded neighboring Kyrgyzstan in an attempt to expand their sphere of influence into Central Asia. The 27th Army Group moved to storm into the small, mountainous Central Asian country from Urumqi straight to Lake Issyk-Kul. It was quickly discovered that such a move was impossible, as the tallest portion of the Tian Shan Mountains lay before them. Commanders quickly realized the only path into Kyrgyzstan was the Torugart Pass, a fair distance away near the city of Kashi. Attempts to move through the narrow pass were unsuccessful due to the hazardous winter conditions. A small Chinese vanguard, while attempting to maneuver through the path, was caught in one of the pass’ many avalanches and was lost. The 27th Army Group now sits in Kashi, awaiting orders from Beijing.

The Kyrgyz Army, now knowing the Chinese were attempting to invade, began constructing defenses in the highlands south of Naryn and north of the pass. Now, nearly every unit the defenders have now lies in mountains between the Chinese 27th Army Group and the city of Naryn. If the Chinese wish to make it into Kyrgzystan, they must either wait until Spring, when the Torugart Pass will be traversable, or take the long route through Kazakhstan.

CENTRAL MYANMAR OVERRUN

Chinese transport helicopters prepare to deliver ammunition and supplies to Pyinmana

Mandalay, Occupied Myanmar - Continued bombing of northern Myanmar, and the destruction of most of the region’s towns and villages, was followed by the invasion of a newly trained Chinese army. The 42nd Army Group, now trained in jungle warfare, stormed into Myanmar and quickly seized control of a good portion of the Irrawaddy River valley before running into defenses constructed since their first raids last month. The Myanma cleverly constructed most of their defenses outside the area bombed last month, which happened to be out of the range of Chinese bombers, which form a solid barrier between Chinese positions and the southern portions of the country. South of this line, almost the entirety of the Myanma Army prepare for an epic battle while the air force maintains air superiority with what few fighter aircraft they have. However, the Chinese South Sea Fleet’s position in the Bay of Bengal puts them in a perfect place to carry out missile and/or airborne strikes against much of unoccupied Myanmar.

BELARUS ANNEXED

pinskdestruction.jpg

A Russian soldier rests in the ruins of Pinsk

Minsk, Russian Federation - Belarus gasped its final breaths of independence this month as the Russian army came down hard on the remnants of the Belorussian military. On orders from Colonel General Anatoliy Kozlov, the cities of Brest, Pinsk, and Baranavičy, the last holdouts of Belorussian Army, were razed to the ground by bombers, which killed many civilians in the process. It is widely believed that incendiary devices were used. The seemingly ruthless move was made because Kozlov saw the Belorussians as “cornered” and “a cornered man is a dangerous man”. After the bombing the Belorussians, broken and bloodied, surrendered to the Russian Federation.

With the Belorussian Army defeated, the Russian vanguard moved into the capital while support forces returned to the homeland. The 20th Guards Army, which fought every land battle in the war, stationed itself in Minsk to help with the transition to Russian rule and to assist incoming Internal Troops. The 58th Army left Belarus and was restationed in Tambov. As a final display of Russian supremacy over the new territory, the former President of Belarus, Boris Kupala, was stung up in Independence Square and was left dangling for the public to see.

Baltics Fly the Blue Banner

Riga, European Federation - After mopping up light resistance in Latvia and Lithuania, the two Baltic states are now firmly in EF hands. Gendarmes have been moved in to keep the peace after the military is gone, and have set up shop in larger cities and towns across the two nations. The EF, in an effort to make the Balts feel at home in the federation, distributed copies of the EF constitution in their native languages and set up governments run by local, pro-European leaders. Meanwhile, at home, Europeans are happy to see the European Military and government succeed in its endeavors.

Russians Build Fortifications, Europeans Build Fence

Narva, European Federation - The European and Russian Federations gave the go ahead for fortifications along their respective borders. The Russians, who dedicated more funding to the operation, constructed fortifications similar to those along the Norwegian and Chinese borders. In Europe however, very little funding was dedicated, which has led to the construction of what is internationally known as “the white picket fence”. Many are unsure as to why “the fence” is what it is. Some speculate it is a symbol of Europe’s neutral stance towards Russia, while others say the European government didn’t understand how much adequate defenses would cost.

Malaysian Folly

Ipoh, Occupied Malaysia - A double pronged invasion of Malaysia has turned sour after Indonesian forces encountered much heavier resistance than expected. Invading armies found themselves fighting a large, well equipped and well armed Malaysian military who denied the Indonesians the gains they pompously expected to have by the end of this month. Several pitched battles have given invaders nothing but casualties and Ipoh, the battle for which is considered a Pyrrhic victory. Much of Indonesia is deeply concerned by the military and government's apparent lack of competence and wonder if other targets should have been seized first.

Yilenekov to Powers: Piss Off!

Moscow, Russian Federation - Recently publicized cables between Moscow and Washington DC show the recent rise of anti-American sentiment in Russia. President Powers’ chastising of the Russian invasion of Belarus and Russian nuclear research has been a main cause in the upwelling of Russians regarding “American saintliness”. The media has also begun bashing Americans through international news segments and political cartoons. President Yilenkov himself has spoken publicly expressing his extreme displeasure of “American intrusions in the politics of regions which no longer concern them”. The widespread sentiment has brought some unity to the Russian people and has spread into a few Russian neighborhoods within the United States.

Brazilians Overrun Paraguay

Asunción, Occupied Paraguay - A quick and fairly effective invasion was carried out by the Brazil’s armies against the small nation Paraguay this month. The combined strength of the Southeastern and Amazonian Armies, proved to be more than enough to knock out Paraguay’s meager military. However, the Brazilian use of their Amazonian Army as force to take out enemy strong points proved to be unwise, as they struggled in fighting on grassy plains and semi-arid forests which dominate most of the country. Very little resistance remains, but handfuls of soldiers are still operating in the northwest of the country.

Buenos Aires, Argentine Republic - An alliance between South American rivals Argentina and Brazil have angered the people of both nations. Uruguay Strikes Back

Mercedes, Uruguay - Uruguayan forces, noticing the lull in Argentine military activity, launched a pair of small offensives to liberate territory. Noticeable gains were made in the west of the country as Argentine forces were pushed out of the city of Mercedes and all areas north of the Rio Negro. While neither side suffered significant casualties, the victory was substantial for the Uruguayans, who now have a better tactical advantage by controlling the north bank of the Rio Negro. Efforts to fortify the river are underway and it appears northern Uruguay is slowly turning into a fortress.

Americans Storm the Bahamas

Nassau, United States of America - After weeks of scrutinizing other powers for expansion, the US has finally begun military action. The First Army, transported and supported by the Second Fleet, struck the island of New Providence and its main city, Nassau, and encountered light resistance from the Royal Bahamas Defense Force. The Americans, expecting the entire country to capitulate after the fall of Nassau, was disappointed when the RBDF fought on. Air strikes from carrier based Strike Fighters eliminated the remaining combatants on Great Inagua which brought an end to the fighting. The US now has complete control of all the islands and the American people are happy to see the government getting off its high horse.

Mexicans on the Warpath

Guatemala, United Mexican States - The Ejército del Sur, capitalizing on the victory over Belize, moved into Guatemala this month in the latest act of Mexican expansionism. It appeared as if another flawless victory was on the Mexicans’ hands, until they reached the town of Cobán, in the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountains. It was there that the Guatemalans engaged the Mexicans with a surprisingly strong force. The battle was short lived due to missile strikes from Mexican destroyers in the Pacific. The capital fell without a fight several days later.

I was missing orders from andis-1, GamezRule, and Abaddon. Abaddon has missed two deadlines, so he's out. I currently have a reserve player for Nigeria, but if he doesn't show up in two days or so, its open to anyone.

For future reference, deadlines for future updates will be posted at the bottom of the most recent update and the top of the first page of the thread.

@ Toteone - Your fleet was too far away to provide air support. From your fleet to Paraguay was equidistant to any point in the Chesapeake Bay to central Kansas. Also, remember, armies trained in certain combat environments fight worse in areas where they are non-specialized.

@ Jason The King - I noticed I forgot to change your stats to adjust for upkeep, and caught it right before the update. This effected your spending a little. I took it out of your research, since the training applied more to this turn's orders.

Deadline for Update 3 orders is Saturday, March 19th at 8:00pm CST
Late orders will be accepted and it may take longer for an update to happen...it would be my Spring Break after all.

We wish to announce the Strategic Arms Limitations Treaty and invite any power who has not yet signed the document to sign and take part in ensuring the safety of humanity.

Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty said:
The States concluding this Treaty, hereinafter referred to as the Parties to the Treaty,

Considering the devastation that would be visited upon all mankind by a nuclear war and the consequent need to make every effort to avert the danger of such a war and to take measures to safeguard the security of peoples,

Believing that the proliferation of nuclear weapons would seriously enhance the danger of nuclear war,

Have agreed as follows:

Limited Usage Clause said:
The Parties to the Treaty will not produce nuclear weapons of a higher yield than tactical nuclear weapons. The upper limit on the number of nuclear warheads to be held by each state shall be 20. Nations under this treaty will open up their nuclear weapons sites to inspectors from any/all of the undersigned. Failure to follow will result in public denouncement, embargoes, and/or blockades.

Non-bomb Usage Clause said:
Nuclear power, propulsion of ships and further developments shall not be banned due to their 'peaceful' usage. 'Peaceful usage' is defined by any application of nuclear technology that is not intended to harm living organisms nor infrastructure.

United Front Clause said:
The Parties to the Treaty, if faced on an agressive nuclear attack on any of the Parties to the Treaty, will declare war on the aggressor or will provide aid equal to 1/4 of their national income to those who do join in on the war until peace is signed. 'Aggressive nuclear attack' is defined by 'any "first strike" nuclear attack by any party'. A Party to the Treaty will be exempt from the United Front Clause if a state of war exists between said signatory and the victim of an aggressive nuclear attack.

Amendment Process said:
Any Party to the Treaty may propose amendments to this Treaty. The text of any proposed amendment shall be submitted to the Depositary Governments which shall circulate it to all Parties to the Treaty. Thereupon, if requested to do so by one-third or more of the Parties to the Treaty, the Depositary Governments shall convene a conference, to which they shall invite all the Parties to the Treaty, to consider such an amendment.

Once again, I simply ask for a Causus Belli for the various wars. and I expect to be refused by China. As long as there is a reason, we will accept it.

I am also displeased that America is becoming the sole representation of International Law of the past. As seen from the russian support for the illegal actions of their government. I urge Russian-Americans to read both, and all sides of the story and see who is right.

In addition, I would like to address the fact that no, America doesn't want to manage the world. America doesn't have to care. We can all leave each other alone. But where would that leave us?

That is the question that must be answered by each individual citizen: Where would the world be without laws? I rest my case.

Thank you for your concern America.
We offer a random document for your perusal: http://wais.stanford.edu/Brazil/brazil_braziliansinparaguay61501.html
While this may appear to be paranoia, our fears of Paraguayan racism is anchored in reality.
Paraguay has long offered its economy subsidies and tariffs, in particular its agricultural sector, in order to combat the Brazilian economy and ward of the process of economic and eventual national unity. While under any normal circumstances our two countries would be united by now the Paraguayan government long took unnaturally anti-Lusophone and socialist measures to artificially secede Paraguay from the Portuguese-Spanish (Brazilian/Argentinian) community of South America. Much like North Korea should long have been liberated not only have we effectively ended this ongoing belligerant aggression forever but the endemic situation of the region, mired in its corruption, inefficiency and oppression has been overcome by convincing the average Paraguayan to join modernity and the new Golden Age of Latindom. Were they truly against becoming a part of Brazil our liberal imperialist invasion would not have progressed so easily.
Just like Bahamas, Uruguay and Guatemala and Belize have so long resisted the onwards march of progression the citizens of Paraguay now too share in the delights of the Pan-American Alliance.

Dear EF: We would be pleased to engage in talks regarding the treaty [START] as well as a possible purchase of French Guyana, as we find funds to be available this month. This is in no way, shape or form intended as aggression, merely a desire for cultural and linguistic harmony (and territorial security) as well as our shared desire for nuclear harmony.

DarthNader: Great update :'), that went surprisingly easy despite my misapprehension about the Paraguayan climate. My statistics look all correct to me (except the '2' in front of artillery disappeared from my Amazonian army).
On another note, carrier air wings have less range? I worked out the radius of an air wing as by the map legend from the nearest coastal point, and it covers a bit more than half of Paraguay.
Oh and me and Argentina have 59 and 58 points of confidence respectively, but we're still getting +1c from stability.

So, what is your argument that international law doesn't exist? Even the Russians of the past view International Law necessary in the world of European Superpowers. Is it defunct in the world of global superpowers? For ages, from ancient to modern writers, European International Law is the basis of international opinion. Now, for Asiatic International Relations, if they wish for their own conection:

For Ancient Chinese International Law

These laws served to regulate the status of nations region and world wide. If they need to be codified and modernized, so be it. But we will not stand for the Laws of our past to be tossed out like an old rag.

We urge all to listen to both and all sides of this debate, and then find out more on their own. International Law is the dance of nations, but its validity stands on the citizens of the nations.

We have not lied. We have the best interests of the people we are protecting in mind. We do not claim their territory to be our own by merely declaring them to be our protectorates, but we felt we had no choice but to intervene in the affairs of Malaysia. The Malaysian government has perpetuated a number of human rights abuses in the name of Sharia law and we aim to end this tyranny. The people of Malaysia deserve a better government than that and it was to them that we declared to hold their best interests in mind. We will not have a neighbor that executes people for religious freedom and treats women like dirt. If you move to stop us Japan, you are supporting this criminal government and are acting against the best interests of the people of Malaysia. Do the right thing and let us bring freedom to the oppressed. As a token of good faith we will recognize your claims to both Micronesia and the Mariana Islands

Yep, you lost a Marine Division, but just barely. A slightly more aggressive invasion would most likely have prevented that. You just kinda approached Nassau while waving out of your landing craft and expected the natives to be happy you came. Instead of waving, you should have dropped a couple bombs.
