Glad I wasn't the only one. I thought he would be revealed last. I guess they might be saving the new Civs for the new year.

"Merry Christmas! Your gift is Mighty Not-Gandhi, ruler of India. May he forever reign!"

They are saving the last spot for a dark horse, since the alt-leader mechanic isn't a surprise anymore.

It's only a new leader. Referencing India would be too much of a giveaway.

If we hadn't been spoiled, we probably would've been guessing for a while until one of us (EaglePursuit, probably) would've figured out that the clues led to Chandragupta.

Now, can we speculate to the ability of this indian leader whom I will never be able to spell the name so I can't even bother to try ?

Because an hability with roads seemed complicated to me. We already have Rome with automatic roads and Persia with better roads.
Maybe builders could use charges to build roads, even if it would be completely lame.

FYI: The peacock is symbolic for Indian royalty. Indeed, at various times in history (more typically during the Mughal period), monarchs held the "Peacock Throne."

That would be okay so long as that's not the full ability. I could see it being useful in certain situations.

Before the trailer, I would have thought he may get a bonus towards military and faith, maybe in combination. But with the roads being so prominent... Maybe automatic roads between cities with governors? But that would be lame.

We got our vanilla civ first looks on Wednesdays, so I think this is return to the routine.

Nearly all the vanilla First Looks were on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Only a few were on Wednesdays, Mondays, and Fridays (mostly put off by Monday holidays), and the Kongo First Look was on a Saturday.

I like that idea but along with extra faith between domestic trade routes and maybe military units in escort formation with a builder receive extra movement.

:xmascheers: I can drink to that!!

Though I would still like a way to simply exclude a leader from being drawn in my random roster of opponents...
i.e. I don't want to have to choose Chandragupta Maurya every time I play...but I will if I that is the only way not to run into that smug little punk who calls me violent!!

Not sure about you all but a Alt leader for India makes me really excited and will be a breath of fresh air. Ive been a civ'er (I created a new term) since the beginning and never once was really into India. Hope this changes.

It's India's alternative leader, right? Peacock have something to do with him, according to my amazing "I took a glance at his wikipedia page" knowledge.

"Maurya" means peacock in Sanskrit. The peacock was a bit of a dynastic symbol , thought if I recall correctly, he associated himself more with the horse because of his many conquests and because all Indian kings associated themselves with the horse.

Without the leak, this would have been a really hard riddle. Roads, trade carts, peacock... many fits.

I'd have guessed Ashoka because of the peacock. I still don't know what the ox carts mean.

More on peacocks and India:

- Peacock (Mayura, or Maurya hint, hint]) symbolize wealth and prosperity, and relate to Lakshmi, the Goddess of Prosperity.

- In Jain biographies of Chandragupta Maurya, he is believed to have been raised in a village known for peacock raising.

- Peacocks like to take rides on ox carts in India (this one may or may not be true ;)).

I know we have the leaked info on Chandra, but it is still nice to figure out the hints.
