And there have been quite a few of those in recent times.

There have been atleast two very popular soap dramas about various (fictionalised) accounts of his life in the past five years or so on Indian television.

Though historical accuracy of these potrayals is dubious.

Looks like a new Civ husbando to offset the waifus.

I guess it's nice to get an alternative Indian leader to always-just-Ghandi, but I can't get myself too excited about it; India isn't exactly a civilization I'm excited about. Never heard of this guy, as I suspect most outside of India have not as well. A fill-in.

On the other hand, before becoming a Civ player, I've never heard of Mvemba a Nzinga, Pedro II, Catherine de' Medici, Gitarja, Ahmad al-Mansur, Sejong the Great, Seondeok of Silla, Askia, Enrico Dandolo, and several others. But for me, it was interesting to learn something new about them, and it will sure be interesting to learn something more about Chandragupta Maurya, even though Civilopedia is biased.

I second this. Civ is a great way of introducing historical figures to a wider audience.

It’s frankly scandalous that we don’t learn more about the precolonial history of somewhere like the Indian subcontinent, birthplace of several religions and home to many millions throughout history.

Agree with this 100%. I'll even add. Although I was interested in history before this game. Since playing, my interest is doubled. Each time I see one of the new leaders or a previous leader, I try to learn as much as I can. And they say,.video games teach you nothing!

Well, only if you don't learn Indian history. I don't know about it much (I was more interested in Indian mythology in my time), but Ashoka and Chandragupta Maurya are the leaders I could name and know about.

Exactly. The fact that I don't know much about Indian history is precisely why I'm happy to see a leader like Chandragupta Maurya in the game, and yet another reason I dislike seeing Gandhi lead the Indian Civilization every time.

I do know enough about India to know the Indian subcontinent has a rich and varied history spanning thousands of years before the British took control - so if they're absolutely set on keeping Gandhi in every single game for being recognizable or whatever, then India needs an alt leader every iteration, too.

The first picture reminds me of Alexander if he were an Indian.

Youku is used in China primarily because YouTube is blocked there, as well as to promote domestic Internet companies.

Yeah...that's totally why it's blocked in China

Agreed; especially for those of us in the US, where the education system largely ignores world history and fails to provide an adequate civic education. And India is home to 1.2 billion people - so millions indeed. It will soon be the most populous country on Earth and makes up roughly 1/7th of the total global population. It's history is diverse and enormously influential on global events for millennia. So yeah, they might just deserve a second leader.

The Peacock is the thing that really narrows it down when it comes to symbolism

So... it's England led by Elton John then...? :p

This is a major character in India's history, and India looks to me like the civ most in need of an alternative leader, because Gandhi is such a recent/modern figure, representing a country with such an ancient history and tradition.

De gustibus non disputandum, but saying you are not interested in India makes you look rather limited in your interests. It's like saying you are not interested in Europe or in Middle East - along with China, India is one of the two ancient civilizations still surviving to this day, and which has given birth to more religions than almost rest of the world combined.

Anyway, here's hoping we will get another of the (rare) good looking male leaders.

I googled Chanakya and the first pic that shows up on the results-page (from a movie/TV-show I guess?) makes him look like Jayavarman's long lost twin.. :D
