Denmark? Why not Netherlands?

Yeah, more civs will certainly be forthcoming. I like the Danes now because they strike me as more fun to play (I'm not sure what you would do with the Dutch that would give them a unique gameplay feel compared to some of the other European powers*), but I expect them eventually.

* Unless you take my idea of giving them a UB and a UI with no UU. UA could be something like East India Company, which would give you free harbors in all coastal cities and maybe something like even more gold for when you meet a City-State for the first time.

Then say that, just blurting out 'Vikings' is not an argument. :)

People think Vikings are cool. The idea of a raider civilization seems fun. That's likely why they were chosen.

I do think they should go back to land Civs for the next one (sorry Netherlands), but that's two naval ones in a row.

Calling the Danes "the Vikings" would be like calling the Americans "the Marines"

Viking is a catchall term for Danes, Nords, and Swedes of the Early Middle Ages.

The Danes were the most militant of the bunch (Nords were primarily settlers and Swedes were primarily traders).

Damn it! They chose Denmark. :( There's sort of a rivalry that's always been going on between Sweden (where I'm from) and Denmark regarding which country was the most powerful at its respective height of power. Sweden was the most powerful nation of the two during the 17th century, while Denmark was the stronger of the two during the 15-16th century. (:

Well we all can agree that without Finland we all would speak Russian by now if we would even exist.

They are saving the best until last ;).

A Denmark civ gives hope for a Dutch one eventually. They just have to intersperse the DLC selection with ones from other parts of the world.

Anyways, I'm sure there's a thread out there more relevant for this but here are my projections (mulling this stuff over all day at work):

Dutch Empire
Willem van Oranje
VOC: no maintenance costs for naval units, extra 1 happiness from luxuries
Polder: built on flat coastal tiles, +1 food for every adjacent water tile
Jacht: replaces caravel, slightly higher stats and can move after attacking

Feel free to comment on balance/originality.

One might similarly argue the Greece should be split into Athens, Sparta, Macedonia, the Selucids, etc ... but that only really makes sense in a scenario specific to that time and geographic area. On the grand timeline and grand scale that civ is portraying, tying Tonga, Samoa, New Zealand, and Hawaii together is the only really sensible approach IMO.

I'm hoping this will be the case for the majapahit or srivijaya empires if they are incorporated into civ5, tying all those city states in java, indonesia, malaysia, borneo, singapore, sabah, the pre-hispanic philippines, etc, etc.

I think the x-pak will have the traditional civs: zulu, netherlands, korea, etc. no source, just 2 cents.

one scenario that would be cool is trading empires of the world like the dutch, carthage, majapahit, portugal, spain (already in), england (already in)... i'm probably forgetting other civs but well... y'all get the idea.

i hope firaxis is listening to this scenario/civ inclusion idea :please:

No Amsterdam, The Hague or Rotterdam as City State, so it is still very likely the Netherlands will come as a DLC. I expect Zulu and Korea are next in line.

Vikings are cool, but I'm a little disappointed about the abilities. Pretty much all about movement bonusses. I played as the Inca, and their movement bonus in hills are really strong in warfare, and altough it was fun, it is actually a bit to strong/dominant in a game, so I would rather have other unique abilities. Skiing rifleman would look great, I assume.
