Discussion on Potential NES and IOT Forum Merger

I'd contest all of your points there EQ, but that wasn't the purpose of my inquiry - I want to know if there is principled opposition from IOT to that name.

Your practical considerations are fair, but I'm interested in knowing which names are on the table before discriminating between them on practical grounds. I think Never Ending Stories and World Building Games are both reasonable and good potential names, but I don't think we should be campaigning for consensus until we've considered all the options.

I would not favor a merger if any significant number of stakeholders who object. If we have a forum that is working for a group of members, then we should not do change for change's sake.

I wholeheartedly support the merger. World-Building Games is a better name as Armchair Emperors really says nothing about what happens within.

IOT and NES would still be a term used inside the sub, but for the sake of explaining what the subforum is, and enticing players to join the games World-Building Games should be the subforum title.

Upon further reflection though, Armchair Emperors would be a great name for a band.

Also, I am wondering what a "significant number of stakeholders" would be. 50%? 40%? 30%?

I agree that I'm not sure that IOT would be happy to move to a board called just NES.

I also second EQ's point. There is always going to be a vocal minority that opposes this on the grounds of cultural contamination of the great legacy of NES but a lot of those people are now gone or more active on the Frontier. I'm not really sure we should be listening to these people as it 1) doesn't affect most of them and 2) they do appear to be a minority from what I know of the situation.

Not while things are up in the air. Why not "NESes and IOTs", though?

it would either be too long if the acronyms were completely typed out or nobody outside of the loop would understand what those seemingly random letters mean. it makes more sense to have the description say something like "Forum for world building and storytelling games. Merger of the Never Ending Stories and Imperium Offtopicum forums."

There ain't many NESers left to object to it. I'm surprised the mods haven't deleted the old threads to make the purge complete. The moment they throw in the thousand threads from IOT into the NES forum, years of NESing will be pushed so far to the back that it won't matter. All newcomers will see IOT, not NES, so you might as well call it that. The NESers who remain behind are more than happy to call IOT and NES the same thing, so they should be just as happy to lose the name NES and go with IOT, since more IOTers remain than NESers?

So long as the old threads aren't tampered with, I don't care either way. I'm not wasting my time with it.

If the merger doesn't go through I will prolly just lobby to change IOTs name instead

Frankly, Luckymoose, and with all due respect (which isn't much anymore) I have no idea why anyone in this thread should even consider your opinions. You've made it pretty clear you have zero stake in CFC anymore, and you're just trolling out of pure spite for IOT.

In my honest opinion I think Armchair Emperors strikes as somehow both pretentious and condescending to the hobby at the same time. It's pretentious in it's extravagance, as if what we do is always global in scope and grave in importance, but the "armchair" aspect, which is usually derogatory, actually makes me feel like someone is patting me on the head for playing cute forum games.
Everything I do somehow leads back to self-depreciating humor.
You are aware that acronyms can serve multiple purposes, right?
Yes, but are other people?

I have a stake in this forum. 17,000 posts are stored here. I don't want them removed because the mods dislike our community. You can whine all you want, but my voice matters.

That's not how rounding works.

Not all of my posts are in NES, genius. Regardless, the hostile community of remaining IOTers is going to turn off any veteran NESer returning when this is set low, as would IOTs being the dominate threads in what was the NES forum, now renamed to whatever these kids think is a brilliant name but isn't (Armchair Emperors? seriously? Are you aware that not every government is an empire and not every game is political?). This, I don't care so much for. There aren't enough NESers left behind, as I said, to make the subforum even remotely NESlike. I do have a stake in it, and I wished you people from the IOT subforum would stop running these threads as if you're in charge. You aren't.

Don't delete the old threads.

Yes but it doesn't matter in this discussion because no one is suggesting we delete the old NESs.
