Hi everyone

Please find below a start file for a friendly GOTM style game to share your experiences with.

Conditions are as follows:
Leader- Sejong/Korea
Other civs- all DLC (Mongolia, Denmark, Spain, Polynesia, Inca, Babylon- this was inspired by the recent DLC sale at Steam)
Map- Perfect world 3 (v4)- all starting on the largest continent
Using UPVEM v122.

Enjoy and share your experiences in this thread up until you hit astronomy.

The start is on a coast/river with two spices, one incense a stone and cow within sight.

Hmm.....the in game mod manager only asked me to update to V122- will there be any game breaking conflicts?

I just played a few turns with v123 and there's no apparent compatibility problems. The difference, obviously, will be in the changes that Thal made in v123. They aren't major, but they'll have some effect.

Nice starting location choice, by the way!

I settled on the coast by the river, stuck with Tradition, built Scout/Worker/Monument /GL/Pyramids, bought 2 more settlers to expand to 4 cities, and hit Astronomy while rushing the Porcelain Tower on turn 120. I was attacked on T68 by Denmark, but fought them off with an archer and a warrior. In the process a quest game me alliances with two militaristic CS, and later one with a maritime CS. I have a slightly bigger army than I need, RA's with 6 civs, and a huge science lead with 3 academies and the NC. I've met all of the DLC civs, and presume there's one more non-DLC to meet. (Void?)

I don't know if I'm doing particularly well, but everything is progressing very quickly. If I would have sped anything up, it would have been the settling of my cities.

Nicely done. There are only DLC civs in the game, so you have met everyone. I'll get onto playing soon. Start a second thread for post astronomy if you like!

Hey there...since there are just a few of us participating, Ill give my whole game rundown here.

I expanded west to the other side of the lake for the marble and natural wonder, then east to the coast to the double spice. I decided to stop expanding and warring there to try out Koreas supposed hermit kingdom playstyle.

I kept up in techs but the other civs expanded a lot and made mountains of money. First Denmark, then Mongolia, then the Polynesians declared war. It was easy to fend them off, but they kept getting stronger. I had completed apollo and was going for a science victory when Polynesia got a UN victory by one vote. The Incans were also rich and bidding wildly in the end, so I guess I was unlucky. Turtle ships are nice and strong, but I didn't discover the map completely until satellites.

Hope everyone else has enjoyed the map.

It sounds like your cities didn't grow enough to generate the amount of beakers that leave the others in the dust. With only three sources (cities) you would need a lot of pop + production.

I found that production was limited in the general area. My three additional cities were to the resources to the east of the capital, the marble and Crater to the SW, and the marble well to the south. These grew slowly enough that it took too long for me to start cranking science out of them. As a result, even though I finished at sizes ranging from 20-25, and had science over 1100, I didn't launch until T285. I consider this not so hot for Korea, but have been having a hard time getting any civ under 260 turns for a science win, taking the tall Tradition route. (I don't think I'd do better with Liberty, but...)

When I think of how to improve, it comes back to faster growth, which often means more gold to buy buildings. I had okay income, but should probably focus on improving it. (In the second half, I warred fairly regularly and sold captured cities.) Secondly, beelining for the Renaissance and Enlightenment would also help.

This map was interesting in that the close quarters kept the AI from generating one runaway civ. They also seemed to lose quite a few workers and settlers to barbs early on. Finally, the proximity to quite a few CS allowed me to do well with quests, even though I explored only with land units, and didn't come close to clearing the entire map. (I built no ships.)

I waited far too long to ally my maritime city states. When I grabbed a few my growth exploded, but it was too late by then. I haven't been playing civ much lately since I started playing Skyrim........and I spotted Thal posting on a skyrim forum as well so I don't think I am the only one. I am finding it easier to sleep after playing skyrim- civ gave me a million decisions to mull over. Skyrim is just zap/slash repeat.

I will likely give this a try but it may take me a while since I am juggling work, SWTOR and finishing Skyrim in my free time. Since Korea is tailor-made for a small/tall science or cultural VC (which is what I did for the previous game with Persia) I may try the opposite and go for a domination VC. It would be an interesting challenge since Korea has no advantages for a conquest game.

Actually Korea does have some advantages for a conquest game. The faster tech rate keeps you on top military tech-wise. In addition, the H'wacha, although typically used for defense, is actually pretty good on the offensive since it is not that much weaker against cities compared to the treb, but it is very strong against the levy spam in VEM.

Pretty fun game so far going full Liberty, then Honor and trying for a domination win. Liberty works out well because there is a lot of space on this map to settle. The biggest issue I am having is a lack of good gold-producing sites on this map and the increased cost in VEM to field a large army. It makes it more difficult to just out-tech and then roll over everyone even on King, like you can easily do in vanilla.
