[RD] Do 'woke' films go broke? (from LGBTQ news)

There's been a few high profile woke flops.

Internet melts down people accuse you of being sone sort of ist.

Things calm down and then people federally admit xyz was actually bad or average.

You see this with MCU/Star Wars.

You can basically make a checklist of "woke" stereotypes in movies. More boxes get check higher chance movie floor or TV show has low viewership.

Having a PoC/LGBTQ lead by itself isn't gonna tank but shifty writing, card board cut out characters tgst tend to go with it will.

Hollywood was using the "woke" patt to cover up bad writing and wooden acting.

So it looks like you haven’t materially addressed my point. You still appear to be saying that a movie will do poorly if it’s bad and well if it’s good. How is that any different from a non-woke movie?

But also should point out, Captain Marvel, a pretty bland movie that was heavily reviled on release by the anti-woke brigade for having a girlboss main character whose actress talked about feminism in her press tour grossed over a billion dollars and is like the 30th highest grossing film ever, and the 2nd highest with a female lead (after Beauty and the Beast, another mediocre “woke” film). So it seems like mediocre woke movies aren’t inherently bound to fail either.

Really? Can you let us know what this checklist is? Because so far it's sounding like "it's woke if it has <insert minority group>"

important caveat:
✅ has a minority
✅ isn’t a good movie

since Spiderverse isn’t woke despite having an afrolatino lead and a trans romantic interest

Here are some items for the woke film checklist:
-if the main character's name starts with K, P, L, or Q
-if the director's zodiac sign is a mammal
-if there are an odd number of microphones on the set

See how Narvels does then. Captain Marvel had tge advantage of peak MCU appetizer for end game.

And yeah it wasn't tgat great I suspect a guekbiss movie won't do that well without tgat release date.

Cf Prey I thought it was great bever once thought "thus is great because it's representing a Native American female". It was good because it was good.

Not that's just me if I hear a movie is "woke" I just kind of assume it's bad or mediocre.

-if the director's zodiac sign is a mammal

But only if Mercury is in retrograde when the film is released, otherwise it's woke if the director's zodiac sign isn't a mammal

I haven't seen that movie so can't comment on it.

Not because of what's in it I generally don't watch super hero movies as I think they're kinda brain dead stupid American crap.

I liked stuff l8ke Blade, Dark Knight Trilogy, and 3-4 of the MCU films up until Eternals (which was crap).

I'll watch them if bored enough on streaming.

I can understand that.

My problem with understanding this conversation is that I am not really sure what a woke movie is.

Does having a diverse cast suffice to make it a woke movie?

Does having outspoken woke actors and actresses make it a woke movie?

Or does the movie have to have woke plots and sub-plots etc to be a woke movie?

Well woke doesn't really have a defined meaning. Fir me it depends on context but generally means toxic progressives or in relation to a movie or TV show they're pushing diversity at the expense of plot/script/character development aka crap movie.

Using pop culture revenue with Star Wars Rey is basically a Mary Sue due to bad writing and the way tgey present her. She's a ham fisted girl boss that's ultimately boring.

Ahsoka (now played by a black women) is not as she has had good writing and character development over 15 years. She would be a crap character if you only watched her initial and early appearances (not woke just plain old annoying and crap).

Ghostbusters 2016 is another example vs Afterlife.

Well woke doesn't really have a defined meaning.

If it doesn't have a defined meaning then I don't know how "get woke go broke" can have a defined meaning, you can just contort your definition of woke to only apply to movies that don't make money if you can't define it.

The Force Awakens is the 5th-highest grossing movie of all time, so if Rey is woke then that's sure not supporting "Get Woke Go Broke" theory

The successive sequel movies admittedly did worse than that one, but both were still pretty successful (TLJ was the highest-grossing movie released in 2017, for instance)

Most of the "woke" movies that do well are good movies and don't push "wokeism" or whatever to hard.b

The ones that are a bit to preachy tend to struggle.

It's also a tendency I have observed it's not absolute.

Lol dude, you didn't see how it was slammed for having a female protagonist beat the predator when the human male hunters all lost? It was constantly being attacked as a woke film.

How woke do you think Barbie will be and how well do you think it will do at the box office?

I liked it didn't not8ce any online kerfuffle.

I think Barbies gonna be a smash hit. It's not an established guy centric IP though.

Quite so.

I find it impossible to meaningfully debate the impact of "wokeness" on movies
without woke or wokiness having a defined meaning in the context of movies.
