I broke down and got the Zone Alarm Pro.
Yes, I'm a sucker.

However, no pop-ups anywhere. NONE!
That alone is worth it!

Actually, joe, you are the prototype posterboy computer consumer of the future. The excellent customer. The exact kind of user that Microsoft would like to crush. You evaluated competing options, tested it, demanded it do it's job, and when you were satisfied (not some bloated monopoly telling you), then you committed the ultimate sin against MS.... you bought software that actaully usurps the design of their OS, and contributes nothing directly to the MS coffers. And you demanded that what you bought actually do the job it advertized!

This is a profound lesson, but one that many consumers are unaware of... you have the right to make a choice, and even in the world of computers, competition among makers of software is a good thing.

I have literally shelf fulls of software in shrinkwrap boxes, and yes, thousands of dollars of MS software, most of which never performed as advertised, and most of which I was forced into buying because of the illegal methods that MS used to force the "choice". One such choice has been MS Office.... we in the gov't were forced into single-source for office software... I have not seen competing software since about 1994, when we could obtain things like AmiPro (word processing), Borland products (database, spreadsheet), etc. It is now the MS way or the highway... and so we must comply, if we expect to do any mobile computing, or routine work on our own system after hours (like writing evaluations, memos, running financial spreadsheets, etc.).

Anyway, congratulations, joe. You are not appreciated by MS, but they will try and change your options for you in the future when they get a firm grip on your sofware and hardware (assuming you are not using Linux or Unix by about 2007 or so).

:)

No. You are an errand boy, sent by grocery clerks, to collect the bill. ;)
What movie?

Zone Alarm Pro is 90-95 % effective with pop-ups, one or two got through.
In fact, it has caused a few minor problems as well.

I cant see some moving Civ3 unit animations in the creation forum.

It seems the page loading does slow down from time to time, but not alot.

I will play with the preferences some more, and get it right eventually.
Overall, pretty nice. :)

And thanks for the compliment. :D

I use AdSubtract Pro. It's $30, but worth every cent. You can block advertisements, animations, auto refresh, popup windows, background images, background music, cookies, referrers, Java applets, and JavaScript. You can specify custom settings for each website. You can define things as ads. (For instance, on Yahoo, I tend to block rd.yahoo.com, used for most of their hyperlink ads.)

What's wrong with you guys? I haven't had a pop-up here in almost a year and I've got nothing resembling a popup stopper installed :p

Don't blame the victims! :p

DON'T REMIND ME!

I have just installed Opera 6.03, the freeware version, and wow, is it lightning fast. And oh-my-gosh does it ever bury MS IE in features. I would recommend anyone stop what they are doing, download Opera, install it (takes about 2 minutes), and use it. It's come a long way since the old days.

One of the things it does very well is control popups. There is a "Quick Setting" that will squash them at will, whenever you want. It is even keyed off the F12, if you don't want to use a pull down menu.

Opera also make many other annoying things easy to control, especially stealing the focus when a window pop up. You can totally eliminate this major annoyance of MS IE if you want. Opera can also automatically open all windows in the background. It can also keep all windows in a toolbar and instantly (e.g, no lag) switch to any of dozens of open web pages you want. I have 20 open pages right now, all neatly organized. MS IE and Netscape cannot do this in their wildest dreams.

Further, Opera does not drain system resources by opening all these windows, like MS IE will do. MS IE will crash your computer if you do too much, at least in Win9x/ME.

Opera does not block ads, but my old copy of AtGuard worked great with it.

Well, Opera has so many features that solve the popup, java, javascript, focus, etc. issues, that I decided to used my 2nd Opera post to tell you all about it!

Long live the lightning fast, free, much superior OPERA! And long live competition in the Software Industry!

:goodjob:

I would like to try that browser, where can I D/L it? :groucho:

I'm still getting cookies galore except on HIGH firewall, HIGH privacy settings ZA Pro. This tends to affect the pages I view somewhat.

The forums are infested. Look below.
Too many pop-ups in the forums, I thought only the main page had them???

There are alot of spyware cookies coming from the forums:

I guess popups are reserved for the fortunate people among us. ;)

BTW Are you sure it isn't somebody or some program trying to break into your computer?

Bah! Stupid Popups. I would use some sort of Ad-Blocker, but I don't feel like having one in my systray taking up resources. The one thing I hate the most are programs running in the System Tray :D .

Thank you very much Starlifter.

D/L-ed and installed already.

HOLY COW! This opera thing is fast!. I like it! :D
I'll try it for a few days too.

I like the Opera browser very much. Its so much faster than IE.

I have uninstalled the Zone Alarm Pro because it was interfering with page viewing and caused a few lock-ups and crashes to my system.

I will probably grab up one of the free pop-up killers mentioned by others here.

THIS is what I dont understand:

Some people (like CoH) stated that they have no pop-up killer and see NO pop-ups in the forums, while I get one almost every time I change pages.

??? How is that possible ???

At home, with Opera, I have pop-ups turned off. It's great! At work, with IE 5.5, I get pop-ups every few pages. It's irritating! (And no, I can't change the system at work. )!

I got zonealarm (free download) and never had a popup - or a warning from zonealarm that a popup was killed - on forums.civfanatics.com. But when a startup www.civfanatics.com I always get that same popup. I don't understand why I (and others) do not get those popups on the forum while others do!
