It seems that instead of everyone chomping on them at every opportunity, everyone just kind of forgot about them until they were too late.

Yeah, I was thoroughly surprised that all of you just ignored the 40+score elephant in the room for so long and then only at the end of the game declared it to be a lost cause/broken.
The opportunity to peg it down was ALWAYS there, just no one took it. There is no one or nothing to blame but the eyes that failed to see the threat.

Congratulations to the Byzantine faction! A surprisingly direct but creative victory!
