Does a heroic death make a hero?

I hated Last Samurai. Dumb all the way thru but the end especially.

Dying is overrated, being a "hero" is overrated. Most of the time you can make more of a difference without taking stupid risks. And then you get to live on to continue making a difference. People who wank over the dead/slain creep me out. I want to die after a long, long life of careful calculated risks helping my family & friends not "taking a stand" in some stupid way. Those overly willing to die don't "live" more than the rest of us, usually they have mental issues and don't see their lives as meaningful without extremity, like 18 year old boys willing to go fight and die in a war just to feel something.

People will die for their country, but they won't live for it.

This is like, toxic masculinity, the thread. Nah, I'm not hurt. That's a very convenient tautology for y'all that I must be "hurt" or "upset," instead of disgusted. I'm disgusted :goodjob:

Is toxic masculinity what industrial pollution does to your sperms?

Snide. Damn you really have a right to laugh at purges and genocide, like no one can take that away from you. Is that what you want at the end of the day? Just to be able to make your peace with cruelty?

Gallows humor is a real thing though... and for anyone who has worked at the gallows (or a gallows-like place), the levity that kind of humor brings to otherwise soul-crushing, suicide-level-depression-inducing situations, is... welcome... necessary even.

The bottom line with this thread seems to be that a bunch of us are waxing and waning seamlessly between joking around with pals and seriously discussing topics... while some of us want things to stay completely serious.

This is a fair point. You have to understand, Kyriakos is not my pal, and I don't take his posts in good faith. I am not trying to "call out" Kyriakos here, because anyone who has been on CFC and CFCOT for any period of time is aware of the character of his threads and his opinions ... I think Kyriakos will agree that he has equal amounts of disinterest in what I have to say. The point I am making is not that humor, or even humor about genocide, is always inappropriate, but tone and context is a thing, and the tone and context that the topic was introduced with is not one I appreciate.

Let's also not forget that plenty of "right"-types on the Internet gleefully look forward to the day that they, too can throw their political opponents out of helicopters just like Daddy Pinochet.

Curious question:

How does Kyriakos differ from anyone else? You don't seem to take anyone's posts in good faith.

You say you aren't "calling him out," which as usual is a good indication that that is exactly what you are doing and you know it. That's such a cliched conversational tactic that I'm surprised you thought you could use it here.

As to you not appreciating the "tone and context" of other people's humor...if you can provide ANY reason that ANYONE should try to tailor their postings to YOUR preferences then get to it.

Wait, i had a positive opinion of you :/
Or maybe i was confusing you with another poster :mischief: Anyway, peace :D

I have one of those!
You have a mostly great mustache? What would it take for it to be fully great?

Make Tim's Mustache Great Again!

And on another topic:

You say you aren't "calling him out," which as usual is a good indication that that is exactly what you are doing and you know it.

There's a formal term for this rhetorical move: occupatio

I hold the viewpoint that everyone on this planet is insane, just in different ways. You must learn to embrace the madness, let it fire you.:viking:

OK, but can you see that this seems to kinda boil down to you saying "I don't like Kyriakos, so all you guys need to stop joking around with him... also, there's some really evil dudes out there... so, again, no jokes, unless I personally approve them"... that's a high, lonely, hill to die on.

My perspective is nobody's perfect including (especially) me, and I don't learn anything just talking to folks who agree with me about everything. A person can disagree with, dare I say offend me, and still, we can find some source of mutual understanding, cause again, pobody's nerfect and life is short. Always being (or at least thinking you're) right about everything, all the time is a long, cold, road man. FWIW, my personal approach to shaming my CFC pals is to say "Shame on you for XYZ, OK I said it, nuff said" and move on.

Don't worry, Kyr I still love you :)
