First off - the disclaimer: I'm not a fan but this is a question I've wondered about for some time. :)

Has anybody ever noticed that Britney Spears can't dance? I watch her sometimes and compare her to the backup dancers and I think it's quite obvious that she is of lower skill level than they are. (I say this as somebody who can't dance at ALL).

She has learned the steps but when you watch her closely she's trying too hard and they just aren't fluid - none of the moves seem to flow together properly. I'm of the opinion that if she had to find a job as a backup dancer she would be unable to do so because she just doesn't perform at that calibre.

I've mentioned this to people before and they say "Really? I think she dances ok - she just can't sing".

So I'm looking for second opinions - maybe from somebody with some professional dance experience? What's everyone think?

:)

Not a lot. Only whenever I see her on TV (which is less often these days).

Just annoys me that whenever I mention to people nobody else seems to "see it". (which means of course that I could be wrong)

:)

Well, I guess I don't know. I'd have to see her compared to someone who actually can dance by some type of standards, of which I have no idea.

Compared to a young James Brown? Oh hell no. He was like oil on the floor.

She can't sing either, what's your point?

Thats just it though - I can't dance, don't dance and don't even like dancing. If she was to dance by herself I probably wouldn't ever know. BUT watch her compared to her professional backup dancers. They have far more skill than she does.

And she ain't a virgin either. Whatever guys! Who cares a bout Britney? Come on......

This thought has consumed me for a long time too. What's really bad about it is my brain runs in DOS-mode.

Who care's if she can't dance or even sing, she's fine :p

as a dancer (ballroom dancing), I can attest to her inability to move her hips - she cannot really move her center of gravity without using force - and it shows.

remains the questions why SHE of all women is incapable of that ;)

Of course she can't dance like her backups. Their whole lives are dancing.

I havn't really paid attention to much of her dancing but maybe I'll pay closer attention next time I see her perform.

I dont really think it matters, what matters is what she can do. No I guess that does´nt really matter either:hmm:

What really worries me is that people actually pay money in order to watch and listen to her sing, or whatever it is she does. :ack:

And I'm not going to comment on Sun's hormones ;)

It's mostly female dancers who spot this.

The male population is staring at her chest.

She tries to claim however that she's spent her "whole life performing" as if she isn't really just some manufactured pop star.

i have always wondered what makes people want to go and see these pop artists so recently i asked a girl friend of mine why she paid 40 pounds to go to a Justin Timberlake concert.... she said she thought his music was crap now but she liked it when she bought the tickets but the main reason was just to watch him.... why no watch him on tv saves vast amounts of money and you wouldnt have to be around a bunch of girls and boys screaming at the top of their lungs....... this world never ceases to amaze me :)

I've noticed that she can't sing -- she relies heavily on vox augmentation, and always uses an overdub in live performances. But she seemed to dance okay to me.

I think that the key to understanding Spears success is to realize that she is a role-model for an entire cohort of marginally talented young girls (and those who wannabe marginally talented young girls -- or be with them.) She lives the dream for the rest of us. At her peak she had the best career -- and the most coveted boyfriend -- in pop music. The perception was more important than the product, or rather the perception WAS the product.

Christina Aguillera, for example, is a much better singer -- very talented, that one. But Spears has been able to maintain her relevance longer than one might have expected when she first rose to prominance in '98 or so, and I think still has the edge on Aguillera DESPITE the obvious higher quality of Aguillera's vox. Spears offers wish-fulfillment.

Madonna is only marginally talented and she has been able to maintain a very successful career for years. Time will tell if Spears will maintain her popularity.
