Lately I've been trolling Goldbugs in real life by claiming that in a society changing disaster I would prefer 80 bottles of booze over a single gold coin.

But seriously, I don't think it's a bad argument to make. (Depending on exchange rates they cost more or less the same)

Your choice - keep this item(s) in your closet and you can't use them except in case of a thunderdome barter system situation.

Would you rather have, A - A Single one ounce gold coin, or B - 80 fifths (750ml) of your favorite liquor.

Bottlecaps

Liquor, medicine and a seed vault.

The idea that gold would have any value in a complete collapse of society is laughable.

in the event of a doomsday, there would likely be a shortage of food given that grocery stores would shut down. It would likely be a barter system with scavenged food is my guess.

I'm pretty sure North America would be ruled from the South where everyone I assume is a redneck with a gun and a lifetime of experience hunting small animals and living off "the land". In contrast, the more educated types (doctors, academics, etc.) would die off, having never hunted anything in their lives and finding the idea of shoving one's hand inside the mouth of a catfish in order to catch it unappetizing. What a world that would be!

If you think there are more guns in the South than the North you haven't been paying attention. ;)

I'm a gold bug. But, yeah, gimme the booze.

Hmmm.... Europe when the Nazis were falling apart sure doesn't support your claim.

If society ain't coming back, gold has no value.

Society always comes back. No matter how much the statist scum steal, destroy and ruin, society always comes back. Especially if they lose control because of their depredations. That's the way people are. Free exchange and voluntary contract always lead to a rebound.

From what I have gathered from Germany right after the war, food and cigarettes (while I vaguely remember cigarettes to literally be an unofficial currency) were the way to go. Though cloths and stuff to produce heat was also very much appreciated.
However, on doomsday, I assume there is no official authority left to enforce some kind of order. So yeah, bullets I am afraid. And hey, when the world is going to hell anyway, why not have some Darwinist shooting fun or cool neighborhood show-downs?
Lets go down like in an action movie :)

Diamonds are a girl's best friend. Compact and portable. Sure the other stuff is good too. Way better than booze actually. I just want it to keep me comfy in the dark.

Hopefully no money. Money is an effective tool used by the bourgeoisie to exert their hold over society while the majority suffer. It must be abolished.
