Dr.NES - The D.O.O.M. Project

After a brief survey of the area and checking up on his squad mates, Ruben calls everyone together.

"Alright, I'm pleased with this area as a base of operations. We should be able to conduct ourselves from here for a few days.

"The sun's on it's way down, and dusk comes quickly in the jungle. No one leaves the mission alone - if you want to have a look around or take a leak or whatever, bring someone with you. I don't want anyone going off on their own.

"Take a few hours to get yourselves set up here. We want this compound to be as secure as possible. Someone sketch the basic layout so we can map out our fields of fire and guard our chokepoints. (OOC: Dread, can you give us a basic map of the mission grounds? I see it was taken care of while I was writing this. ;))

"We'll stay here for the rest of the evening and sleep in three shifts. I want everyone here either on the ground floor of the chapel or at their post by 2200 hours. Everyone sign up for a shift and a position. I'll put the list here for easy reference. Magus, since you're not a soldier by profession, you can go ahead and sleep the whole night through. That leaves twelve of us to stand watch."

Ruben pins up a quickly scribbled list on one of the mission's interior walls, then sets a pen on the table next to it. It reads:

FIRST SHIFT - 2200 to 0100
Tower Lookout 1:

Tower Lookout 2:

Next to this, he puts up his revised notes on squad members and their functions.

Marcus: Sharpshooter
Sarge: Machine Gunner
Terni: Rifleman
Magus: Scientist
Niki: Medic

So far, so good.

Reg surveyed the grounds. How long had the place been abandoned? What had been the fate of the missionaries? Whenever he arrived in a new place, the historian inside him asked those sorts of questions. Old habits were hard to break. Even if he barely remembered the hazy, carefree university days, the impression left by those lessons remained.

How long since the last human being set foot here? Did the locals still come? Is this a place fondly remembered, or a monument to cruelty?

He sighed. Either way, it didn't matter. Even if any of the locals were left, would they even care? The missionaries here, saints of sinners, would cease to be even ghosts of history. They'd just disappear forever. One day, Reginald would join them.

Maybe this was the time, maybe he would finally leave his mark here. But that wasn't the plan. Survive. Come home. Wife, house, kids. Leave your mark on the world that way. If it wasn't too late.

Never too late. he had to believe that, believe there was still a reason.

He pushed the poisonous thoughts of his mind, focused. There were things to do first, like locate the Brazilian team.

He kicked at the grass at his feet. Something blue caught his eye. He bent down. The usual pain shot up his back. He kept telling himself he wasn't too old, but while he could force his mind to believe, his body was harder to convince.

A pen.

A remnant of the mission? He held it up to the light. No, recent. Good condition.

For the first time since he left Manaus, he allowed a small smile to grace his lips. Eureka.

"Commander O'Neill, everyone, look at this," he held up the pen for all to see, "We weren't the only ones with the idea to use the mission. Someone was here, and not long ago. Either the research team was here, or someone else we don't know about. Before we lose the last of the light, I think we need to give the entire grounds a thorough search for more signs, figure out who these people were."

"By the way, I'll take first shift."

No I think we need to dig in, I don't know about you but I would rather be more aware of what is going on around the mission then what is hiding under the mission.

We can do it first thing in the morning when you have had your rest and the patrols are out doing their reconnaissance. It is just a pen after all, it is not a matter of urgency right now.

If no one else claims the last shift for door spot 2 before the update I will take it over.

I agree, it is more important to secure our position using the last of the daylight we have. I think we have to assume that whatever is out there will eventually be aware of our presence, and we have to make sure they don't take advance of our first night here to eliminate us. We are pretty close to one of the attacked villages, the attackers may be nearby.

As for my theory why the pen is here, it is probably from the research team. They may have had the same idea as us with regards to the mission. However they are not here anymore...

Ruben spent a short time up in the tower, surveying the grounds below. As he was finishing the climb back down, Reg burst in with his find.

This was good - real progress, a useful find, and it proved that the squad was on the right track. In that triumphant moment, a rare flicker of amusement crossed Ruben's face.

"A pen, eh? I can never seem to keep track of them, either. This is good. The research team must've passed through here." He paused, thoughtfully. "No, we can't assume that. Still, it's a good sign. We have a few hours of light left. Feel free to search the mission, if you've got your equipment in order, but don't leave the sight of the chapel. If darkness falls and our head count comes up short, I won't be happy."

Satisfied that everything was in order, Ruben walked over to the signup sheet for the night's shifts, and frowned slightly.

"No need to compete for heroics, men. I don't want to deal with any sluggish soldiers tomorrow morning. You all know your bodies better than I do, and I'm sure the guys who get a full night's sleep will be thankful, so I won't stop you from volunteering, but don't make a habit of it."

(OOC: For the coming turn, Dreadnought, I'd suggest having a short nighttime turn, even though we know what we're going to be doing up to tomorrow morning. It allows for character development during the night, and of course it keeps us in some suspense as well. ;))

Rachel carefully checked the second room in the cloister before entering. The place was very dusty and she was having a hard time keeping herself from sneezing. She rubbed her nose as she glanced around the small room. It was empty save for several layers of dust and grim, but as she turned to leave she caught sight of something in the corner and took a closer look.

It took several seconds to identify what she was looking at. A scorpion stood perfectly still on the dusty floor, apparently resting. Rachel frowned in disgust and brought her boot down upon it with a satisfying crunch. She took a moment to scrap boot across the floor to get the gunk off before leaving the room. Catching sight of Terni at the other end of the cloister, she gave a nod to show that this end of the building was clear before heading outside.
-----

Rachel listened intently to Ruben as he gave orders about the night. She opted to take first shift guard duty because she didn't feel tierd at all. And besides she thought I can get six hours uninterupted sleep this way.

"Hey Ruben," she spoke up when Ruben finished, "we should also think about getting as much gear and ammo off the boat as possible. Wouldn't want to run dry if push comes to shove neh?"

At Rachel's suggestion, Ruben shakes his head.

"I've considered it, but I don't think it'd be a good idea. We're already pretty loaded up - any more, and it'll slow us down. We could take a bunch of equipment with us and stock up at the mission, yes, but we'll be leaving it during the day, and we'll have to leave it entirely to check out some of the attack sites that are more than a day away. I don't want to leave a bunch of guns and ammo out here where anyone could find them. We'll have to rely on what we have with us."

Rachel gave a shrug at Ruben's reply. "Whatever you say, your the boss." She smirked as she turned away. "But I will say I told you so if we end up running dry."

Rachel walked into the chapel without listening to the ensuing debate about the mysterious pen that had been found. It certainly was important, but at the moment she was more interested in trying to get some satellite pics of the area then digging around for any other odds and ends.

She sat down by one of the windows and pulled her laptop out of her backpack. As she set to work she noted that the laptop had only a limited power supply. Out here in this god-forsaken jungle there wasn't going to be any opportunity to plug it in for a recharge. She would have to use it sparringly.

Ops there is a whole page I have yet to read. Carry on.

"I can take the last morning shift," Niki said. "When I was in the Army, I had to wake up really soon everyday to take care of the hospital, so there is no problem in there.

"I believe that there might be something else from the research team around here, after all that pen Reg found couldn't have been the only thing left here. Since there is still some sun light, we should make the most of it before we finally start with the camping."

Sarge breathed deeply, he loved being in enemy territory doing what he does best, setting up an impregnable defense. Or at least trying to, but one member insisted on scouting out for more stupid pens, another seems to rather focus on the camp instead of the defense works, the group seems split but no matter Sarge will continue working on what he can and hope the base does not fall under attack. He grabbed his M66 and set it up on the first door in anticipation for his first shift and placed the extra ammo nearby. With that done he walked towards the side of the building and grabbed overgrown vines and searched the landscape. Several small trees and stumps nearby along with the occasional stone, "Excellent." He thought and grabbed several long length vines.

With his Marine issued Kabar knife he measured out the vines and tied them around trees and stones, after an hour of work he stood back and stared at the two doors, the vines... barely visible in the tall grass would prevent a straightforward charge toward the doors and giving the defenders adequate time to respond. Impressed that he had done his job after watching one of the members trip over his vine. He walked over to Ruben to inform him of the new defense trap. Hopefully the rest of the team will know too before someone trips and kills themselves.
