DrakeNES - Changing Times

Spain would like to extend an offer of an alliance to the Kingdom of Two Sicilies, and also an invitation to the United States of America to enter into negotiations regarding any possible deal that could be beneficial to both parties.
lurker's comment: So Storm, are we ever going to get an update?

Speech to the Chinese People - Danimo Yuanima

I must admit, the nation has been falling. Our proud nation might be one of the biggest in the world, but our very power is falling. The British sneak in opium, that drugs our minds. Our government is corrupt. Our economy is falling. Our leaders are incompetent. I hereby wish to reform our system of government to one which will help us rise to greatness. The Westerners call it democracy....

Edit: 1,300 post!!! :)

TO: The Kingdom of Spain
FROM: The Kingdom of Two Sicilies

This is acceptable. We, heirs to Louis XIV must stand together in these troubled times!

ooc: NAP is non agression pact. The signees agree not to attack eachother for the proposed time period.

DPP is defensive Protection Pact...means if one gets attacked, the other is obligated to aid them.

MPP is mutual protection pact...sounds a lot like dpp, and literally, it is, but is commonly thought of as a full alliance: meaning you and the country you signed it with become good friends and discuss who to attack, and what to do in the future.

And no, I will stick with netherlands, thanks sheep.

OOC: There may be an update sometime when I have more than a couple hours a week to dedicate to NESing. I do not want to be the mod who takes 3-4 weeks to write an update, so until I have regular time to do so I won't restart the NES.

Spoiler NAP-related rant :
Fun as it is for me to pretend to not understand what people are talking about, I believe that some elaboration on my stance on the NAPs is needed. Its not even as much the fact of their utter uselessness that bothers me, as it is the fact that they are utterly anachronistic and seem ridicilous at best within this context. Look, in the 19th century - and in most, if not even all time periods - it was de jure presumed that nations won't attack each other anyway! A proposal of a NAP automatically implies that the proposing side does not trust the other one to respect its sovereignity (and that principle in its modern form alone goes back to Westphalia), and so is, for the most part, insulting.

Even if we leave the ridicilousness aside, it is an anachronism in and of itself. I do not recall any NAPs in the 19th century at all.

Carmen, you really should stop doing that! :p

Thanks for the tip das!

From Qing China
To Britain

Can we agree to stop the opium trade? We'll offer you our goods for more *ahem* appropriate goods, such as food or other 'foreign items'.

To Siam

We wish to propose a temporary alliance. Or at least trade/NAP. :p

To Russia

Proposal for a temporary alliance?

To India

Alliance?

OOC: Care to elaborate on just what the hell is happening in China?

Stop confusing me. Anyway,

IC:

No.

Spoiler NAP-rant-related answer :
Short answer is, I agree. Historically in this period, non-agression was implicit, no need to mention. However, this is a game. And while the governing bodies of the various nations may trust this implicit agreement, and feel slighted by anyone who suggests that it would not be implicit, the same is certainly not going to be true for the NES players. We expect backstabbing, and there is no implicit agreement of cooperation between players.

As you say, a NAP is a ridiculous thing to suggest between two nations of this era. But is it a ridiculous thing to ask another NES player? I guess the real question here is how much this is a game, and how much it is roleplaying. As a newbie I'm not sure, and I try to adapt. I would certainly like to see more of the latter, but expect the former, in particular when I see someone else suggest an NAP first. And when you see posts such as Carmen's above, can you possibly disagree? ;)

Carmen, India is a British colony. It can't ally or trade..

TO: China
FROM: Siam

We'll pass. We don't ally with the lapdogs of the Westerners.

TO: Sweden-Norway
FROM: Denmark

It would be most pleasing that we help trade in the Baltic It will enrich our nations and our peoples! If you propose a trade treaty, I am quite sure we will accept.

To China
From Britain

Why would we stop the Opium trade when so many of your people crave our product?

Spoiler NAP thing... :

Never have I seen, in all my NESs that I moderated or played in, a player not attack another player because of an NAP. Frankly, if it makes you feel better to have an NAP, then there is no harm. But do not rely on the fact that just because you have it, you are anymore safe then if you didn't.
