I guess it depends on the procedure... I priced an upper endoscopy with a couple places and the only variable was if and how many biopsies were taken. I agree there's more confusion than need be on what should be straightforward - like with an xray, but even mechanics cant tell you how much something will cost until they get into the job to see whats wrong. On the other hand when I do ask nurses about the cost they seem taken aback as if that isn't a concern, they're used to a system of 3rd party payers.

A mechanic can usually get you in the ballpark with an estimate with the understanding that the real price may change.

Doctors often don't have a flipping clue how much they charge, much less what the after-insurance cost will be.

I find that to be even more true with GPs, specialists - at least my limited experience - seem to have a better understanding of the costs
