Dune, part II

Loved the first. Not going to watch the trailer.

It was an ok movie, I liked the twist at the time :)
Besides, it had the memorable line: "I know what you are thinking now, Bob. You are thinking that I don't exist"

Well, I've known for years that Kyriakos isn't into cheerful art. He may have mentioned his favorite movies years ago, but those conversations often happen in the video threads - which I don't often even look at, as they take forever to load on my computers.

I've never seen any of those you've mentioned.

I only know Angel Heart for sure..
then maybe The Thing, Spider, Gremlins and Psycho but those are all guesses ;)
Angel heart and Spider, primarily :) Vertigo also.
I like other movies, but I am not really a movie person.
The "but only like 5" wasn't meant as "I only like 5 movies" but "I only like something like 5 movies", figuratively.

Hm, going by the book (chapter 2), it is theorized by Piter that Leto might still (though there is a very small possibility) choose to become a rogue House and move to some planet outside the empire, along with his atomics etc.
Why would simply refusing Arrakis lead to that? Iirc in neither movies is it discussed at all (to be fair, Piter in this movie barely had any lines, so that's no surprise).

Terry Gilliam's Twelve Monkeys is a masterpiece. :)

A state of kanly exists between House Atreides and House Harkonnen. They are officially enemies.

The Emperor is secretly in league with House Harkonnen to take down the Atreides, since he can't be seen by the other Houses of the Landsraad to take sides. This is supposed to look like it was all the Harkonnens' doing, within the laws of kanly, even though it was Leto who declared it.

So while it might look to outsiders that giving Arrakis to the Atreides is a reward, it's really a trap. Leto knows this, and considers refusing it, taking his family and their atomics and running.

Simply put, if the Emperor orders you to do something - and taking over Arrakis and the spice mining was an order - you either do it or reap the consequences of refusing or running. Running wasn't a viable option, both logistically and because Atreides honor wouldn't let Leto carry through with it.

As for why the Emperor did this in the first place... he knew that the Atreides' army was growing, it had highly-skilled soldiers, and they gave their loyalty freely and unwaveringly. That made some Houses nervous and made the Emperor downright paranoid. The fact is that Shaddam and Leto were cousins, so Leto had a legitimate claim to the throne, unless Shaddam could figure out a way to get Irulan married to a suitable successor (it never occurred to him that her marrying Paul would have settled things even if the Harkonnens and Fremen weren't part of the equation). However, this was a solution that did not suit the Bene Gesserit, as they wanted to control Paul. Once he became Emperor, it took a very convoluted plot among the Bene Gesserit, the Guild, the Tleilaxu, and some Fremen traitors to get Paul off the throne.

^ The Bene Gesserit are basically some powerful, scheming and manipulating b*tches. They have more or less successfully crossed noble bloodlines for generations, attempting to indirectly control the Imperium and the Houses. Lady Jessica was installed as a means to control House Atreides, Leto and his offspring. But she basically betrayed them and chose Leto and Paul over the order.
