Emperor Cookbook II: Mehmed II

@Gliese:
Spoiler :
Thanks  I am so dumb...
If I had realized that I would have perhaps placed my Edirne differently... on the bright side, I have at least a gold mine to let me forget this...

RRRaskolnikov: I haven't seen a single save thus far that placed Edirne different, including my own.

There are a couple saves with Edirne with Gold in 1st ring instead of Corn (still hitting all the resources). That alternate spot has the benefit of creating an isthmus bridge to both sides of Tokus finger of land. The more popular spot will be a decent food city, since those 3 lake tiles become good with a Lighthouse, 3F2C (better than a riverside grass farm), and if we manage Colossus, even better.

Bleys

Spoiler :

Yeah I put the GL and NE there.

That should be everyone! Let me know if I missed someone, or did a bad link or something.

Here's my evaluation of the saves. The baseline is three cities, four warriors, two workers, fair tech, preparation for the GLH and no working undeveloped tiles. The comments are about differences from that.

CC Has 3 axes and 3 workers. Very good! Somewhat behind in research.
RRR Gold and ivory online. This is huge for capital growth. Only one worker but the guy clearly been used well. Needs IW and AH but is researching Writing.
pigswill Has an axe and three workers. Edirne has already expanded borders and has a wb on the clams. No pottery. Small minuses and a lot of pluses.
Mlh Edirne nicely developed. Settler can be whipped for a fourth city. Poor exploration and teching. Still doesnt know Sailing or Masonry.
DH Generally good. Best Edirne of all. Unfortunately he is pursuing the wrong wonder in the wrong city.
KM Only two cities and one worker. Consequently both cities are in bad shape. OTOH, the GLH is almost 2/3 finished. On this front, he is the best of all.
Chrome Underdeveloped. I'm not sure what went wrong in this game but clearly it went wrong.
Bleys Decent but somehow blah. There are no minuses to this game but no pluses either, except for a workboat which won't be needed for many turns.
WH Ankara is in the wrong spot (see RRR). Poor exploration and a bit behind in tech. I'm sorry to be so negative because the save actually looks pretty decent overall.
RJM Knows Writing. Well done! OTOH, Sailing and Masonry have been ignored and the GLH with it. Not to mention those cheap lighthouses.
IPEX Generally underdeveloped. Only two cities. Another game that went wrong.
Soirana good teching and good development overall. A bit weak in military.

I found this set of saves very difficult to compare. In the end, it was very subjective.

1st place to Abegweit for a 1st class all round performance.
2nd place to Carl Corey for those axemen, despite being behind in some areas
3rd place to KingMorgan for all those hammers towards the GLH although behind in other areas

Honorable mentions to Soirana and MkLH for their research rates and Winston Hughes for all round performance.

RJM

Agreed with RJM that it's difficult to compare. My choices in order:

1. Pigswill
2. RRR
3. Carl Corey

Many honourable mentions.

KingMorgan: I guess I missed yours, sorry. ;)
Since I'm not actually a participant I allowed myself some slack in reviewing the games, mostly quickly looking at pictures. 1500 bc is a short round in any case which is why I played to 400 AD in one go.

SHADOW, NOT FOR VOTING

Spoiler :
Here's a save with the Great Lighthouse up (built 1650 BC), 3 cities and 3 workers out by 1500 BC, to show it's possible. I messed up my first save decided to toy around with optimization. Could probably still make a prettier save by not teching pottery awkwardly late so I could get granaries up at the appropriate time. A lot of people seem to favor the copper spot, but I wanted elephants.

It was difficult to choose between the first two. Both are very well played, with no serious weaknesses. They're also following almost identical plans. I had to weigh up a load of small factors on each side to reach a decision.

I really like RRR's save, especially the quick connection of :) resources. With a second worker, it might well have been #1.

I think the better spot for the Copper city is 1E of the Marble, not 1S of the Copper. It has more usable tiles, since it encapsulates all the river-tundra tiles down there. I also like the Gold city with the Corn in the first ring, not the gold. That lake is a good supply of food when you can put a lighthouse up. Choice of 3rd city is debatable, I liked the Marble-Copper, but there is a strong case for the Ivory city (settled on the Plains Ivory)

If only I had started the correct wonder, lol. I am not very familiar with watery starts. Nice job overall for everyone!

Spent a bit of time going through the games:

Krafter: solid but a little 'behind the clock' and missed out on Glite techs.

Ipex: good exploration and research, you seemed to have forgotten culture for border pops and a bit behind on building.

RJM: not sure about Ankara as third city and also no culture for border pops.

Soriana: solid game, good on exploration though slightly lagging in tech.

WinstonH : solid round, you missed out on locating the copper but decent third city and heading towards archery to compensate.

Bleys: a solid round, difficult to find much else to say but a solid round.

Chromium: you seem to be a bit behind the pace this round though early granaries to recover from whipping might enable you to catch up.

KingMorgan: Doing well on Glite but maybe other aspects of the game have been sacrificed for it.

DH: your game is a lot more solid than it appears, secondary cities are well developed and if you recalled workers to improve the capital you'd have a chance at Glite as you have the techs (and lighthouse) already.

MkLh: Not sure about Ankara's location and slightly behind on research.

RRR: Nice game, got archers to compensate for lack of copper, teching ok, exploring ok, workers are the obvious weakness.

CC: Like the axes, doing ok for research and exploration. My concern is that having to grow the city and lack of chops is going to delay Glite making it a definite gamble.

Abegweit: a solid all round game, not much more to say.

Thoughts on Copper City (for those who built it). The two choices are either 1E of marble or 1S of copper. East of marble captures all three resources in BFC but significantly delays copper, need a monument and border pop first adding about 25 turns.
South copper misses out on marble but gets copper straight away, needs 150 culture to capture the marble which is a significant boost towards Glib and the Epics so that's a problem.
Long term they're both crap locations. Marble city: lake, 5 coast, 4 tundra, 2 tundra hill, tundra forest, 4 ice, marble, copper, fish. Copper city: lake, 7 coast, 3 tundra, 2 tundra hill, tundra forest, 2 ice, mountain, ocean, copper, fish. Essentially marble city gains marble and tundra (3f, 2h, 2c with irrigation) in exchange for 2 coast (4f,4c assuming litehouse). There's not enough coast in either to really justify Moia statues.

My votes:
1) Abegweit
2) RRRaskolnikov
3) Winston Hughes.
