Royal: OK, will go to update that! :goodjob:

Cleric: I said "men". So they aren't tanks or forklifts. Now stop screaming and get your army out there to crush them. :hammer:

"So, they Dare to doubt my power and that I even Exist." What seems to be a young man says to himself, as he overlooks the Lands of Olympus from a Blacony High, High above on the tower. suddenly, a very evil smirk Appears on his face, and he raises his hand, small ectrical charges seeming to flow off of it and collect into a small white glowing orb. "very well, I shall Show them that I exist."

with a casual flick of his wrist, he send the orb shooting off across the skys, leaping from cloud. within a few seconds, it has arrived at it's destination, a Small Town just past the Olympian Border. the orb pulses once, then dissipated, scattering it's electrical charge across the sky above the Town, then enhancing it.

in the space of a few minutes, Dark, brooding clouds form above this unnamed town, bolts of Lighting crackling inside, then Raining down upon the town in Numbers Untold, unleashing Distruction and terror indiscriminately.

OOC: I enhanced the water content and electrical charge above the town for a few minutes. after this attack, the remnants of the enhancement will prevent any clouds from existing above that spot for many years to come.

The Grinning Death, as the hideous epidemy was dubbed by the public, flew over the kingdom like an ever-changing wind. In fact, the disease had indeed come of a dark and foul gale from the western shores. Initially, the people in Arkopolis began to grow terrifying smiles that caused faces to split – the mouths streched to bare prodigiously sharper teeth and wider jaws. Then the affected humans became monsters, deformed and in pain of their misshapen faces. Still, they continued to smile, and grew mad or lost completely control. Some turned into raving killing machines and bit and killed many others before being slain by the garrison. Unerringly, these carried milky or yellow eyes, and had grown fur on their limbs and backs. It was as if they were turning into animals or beasts of the wild forest.

The plague was first only seen in the capital, but soon began to spread in the countryside. Many small villages denied travellers to enter the village grounds or stay overnight. Some were so afraid that they began hunting for afflicted within their community, performing ritual slaying on frequently innocent victims. The only thing that managed to cure this mad panic was the prescence of High Queen Galenna, who traveled to the fringes of her domain to speak with her people and hear their troubles. She was followed by a retinue of mages and soldiers, who methodically went through the entire population to root out and capture the afflicted. They were then sent to a quarantined vale in the southern corner of the kingdom, where sages constantly studied them and researched for a cure. Sadly, nothing was found to be effective.

The people greatly cherished the High Queens involvement and genuine concern for her subjects. Still, they all feared they would be the next, and lived every day in uncertaintly. If they got the disease, they would be killed. If not, they may have to slay or be slain by loved ones. The only thing to give them hope was this: the sages were close to finding the cause of the disease. Study of the plague had paid off, and they were certain that the cause was a magical one. Some of the mages were on their way to join the research team in hopes of detecting any magical residues around the afflicted. From there, they could trace the foul magic to its source. Unfortunately, the process was long and difficult. The cure would have to wait, but the Grinning Death lived on borrowed time.

The College of Biomancers, Camman, extraordinary meeting
3rd of february, 131 A.Y*
"I don't care about your vague dissembling, I want to know what's happening!"The Sergeant Major of the 2nd Biomantically Enhanced Assault Specialist Troop (BEASTs, informally) snarled at the assembled magi. Faelban, an adept, tried to get a word in. "Yes, Sir, so do we, but we don't kno-" "Then why aren't you letting everything else you're wasting time with be and finding out?"
The sergeant had been railing on for going on half an hour now about the strange plague afflicting the Assault Specialist Troops, and he wasn't going to let reason derail him. "The ASTs are vital to the defense of the Union from all the bizarre creaures out there, and they cannot perform their duties when they are rotting where they stand!"
Faelban rallied for a new attempt. This was getting annoying. "Sir, what you say is perfectly true. But, however much you might wish that it was, this College is not an auxillary of the Union Army. We have other projects and responsibillities, many of which are just as important -or more so- for the present and future prosperity of our nation. This plague is an unwelcome conundrum, and we will have our best adepts look into it, but all in due time. The Council-"
"The Council sent me here, man!" The sergeant-major thunderously interrupted. "Like me, they would like to see less "looking into" and more results. The Colleges are great drains on our developing economy, and were I you, I would consider that very carefully before you send in your next quarterly report and requests for funding."
How dare the man! This was outrageous! Did he -or the Council- think scientific or arcane accomplishment just spontaneously happened whenever it was convenient? Faelban stood up again to set him straight. "The Colleges are not "a drain". The pursuit of knowledge, the advancement of our understanding both of this strange new world, and the one our ancestors left, cannot, can never be "a drain". It is an investment towards the realization of our glorious future."
As soon as the adept went back to his seat, the sergeant rose to give a retort:
"A noble sentiment. I, however, do not share your idealism, and if you cannot provide what the nation requires of you in the present, preferring instead to prattle about the wisdom of the past or the opportunities for the future, then you may soon find that neither does the Council."

Roddyna Orders

Split military into seven 100 infantry companies. Each one gets 1 Techmagi and 1 Telepathic Engeneer. Send 6 of them out as shown on attached immage by green dots. The last one stays in New Moscow to provide police/protection.

From local settlements
To Roddyna
Have you preserved any of the Ancestors' works? :hopeful:
We have preserved many of the Ancestors' texts in our Science Library. Unfortunately, the Ancients use some terms to which there are no defenitions, and so most of the text are completely unusable in practical aplications. Our brigtest minds continue to try to decipher their meanings, and hopefully we will find the keys to unlock their secrets.

From Furey's Dominion
To Roddyna
We seek a meeting with you to negotiate borders for our respective holdings. Our proposal is a line between the ends of all the rivers of this continent, extending as last drawn towards the coasts.
[ooc] not realy sure what you mean by that description of the proposed border[/ooc]
To Furey's Dominion
From Roddyna
A meeting would be most welcome. As our borders have not gotten close to eachother yet, we think its a bit early to draw a dividing line, but assuming that we understand your proposal correctly, it seems perfectly reasonable.

--------------------------------------

The Techmagi Assembly
The Techmagi Assembly Hall is a large circular room with one main feature, a massive ring shapped table running around the whole room. Looking at the room it seems that getting to the center of the room is impossible without climbing over the table. There are chairs around the outside of the table. The Hall is recently completed and this is the first time it will be used for its intended purpose.

Czar Roddy walks in at the head of the 10 Techmagi of Roddyna, each one picks a comfortable chair and sits down. The Telepathic Engeneers who have also been invited to this meeting remain standing next to the outside walls. When everyone seems settled, Czar Roddy stands up, pauses in front of the table... which parts to open a path to the center of the room... and walks to the middle of the room.

- "My friends and students." - all the Techmagi had at one time been the Czar's students,

- "We now know who our enemy is. It is fear. Fear in the hearts of the people of Roddyna. We the Techmagi and Engeneers have learned to control the magic of this world to do our bidding, but we are not realy different from the common man. He too can control the magic, but he does it unconseously, through his strongest feelings, through his fears. Our fathers feared that their machines would turn against their masters, and the Magic made it so, the machines turned. The people of Roddyna no longer fear machines, they fear the dark, the uncivilized, the unlearned, the technologicaly backward. And their fears manifest themselves in the Orcs we have now fought. For the time being the Orcs are destroyed, and the fears of our people are calmed, but this will not last. If we relax now, they will immagine that the Orc menace hiding in the darkness will want revenge on our nation, they will fear that the Orcs will come in greater numbers, they will fear that the Orcs will be stronger. And everything they fear will come to be. We will not be able to fight off the Orcs for ever, for they come from our own people's fears and our people's greatest fear will always be that the Orcs will be stronger then our military and magic."

Czar Roddy paused for a half a minute to give the Techmagi the time to process this information. Then he continued...

- "So while the recent defeat of the Orcs quiets our people's fears, we must do what we can to make sure that their fears do not come back. Our strategy against invasion has been 'see an invader and go fight him', unfortunately, this leads every person living on the borders to fear, and rightly so, that they will be attacked FIRST and defended AFTERWARDS. To conquer this fear We will split our military and send it to all the borders of our lands, so that every citizen of Roddyna knows that any invader, be it Orc or other, will have to fight our military and magic BEFORE they can harm any citizen of Roddyna. I know how hard it would be for any of you to leave your workshops, and so I do not order, I ask for volunteers. I ask for volunteers to lead these infantry companies to be stationed in the border towns of our nation. Think on it, and rise if you are up for it."

The Czar stopped pacing the inner circle of the room and headed back to the chair he had sat in earlier. When he reached the inner edge of the table, he paused, and again a section of the table slid under its neighbor to allow him passage. He sat down, watched the table close again, and smiled.

He smiled because he was glad to see that his students had taken his advice and realy were giving serious thought to his assigment. He smiled because he knew that in some kingdoms, the kings/despots advisors would have been jumping over eachother to volunteer for mission of this importance to their king. But those would be motivated by a greed, driven by the wish to raise in their king's eyes, and thereby win power for themselves. His students saw this assigment for what it was... a need of the people that had to be filled. And they all gave serious consideration to their ability to handle such an assigment. Any Techmagi left without his workshop was only half a Techmagi. Their powers grew as they made new machines, bonded with them and concentrated on controling as many of them as possible. The true passion of any Techmagi was the invention and construction of the machines, for without that they would never control their machines. Without a workshop to invent and build his machines a Techmagi's powers would stop growing, he may learn to control his current machines better, but will never add new machines to his arsenal.

The other reason the Czar was smiling is that even though in his speech he had made it seem like those that volunteer would be giving up their workshops to travel with a wandering military company, that was not realy the case. All he needed from them was to set up visible strongholds on the outskirts of the nation. He was yet again setting a test to his students. Which of them would see that if they did not give up their workshops voluntarily, the nation would be overrun by its fear and they would lose their workshops and their city in the fiery chaos of a losing war....

The first Techmagi to rise was also the youngest. The Czar was almost saddened to see him volunteer, Anthony was a very bright mind, and his inspiration for invention seemed endless. The Czar would miss the long conversations and arguments with one of his closest and best students and fellow inventors. A couple more rose slowly and then three more looked around and rose too. At this point the Czar rose.

- "I thank you for your sacrifice my friends. You will each be given command of a company of 100 of our Infantrymen. You will take them to a town on the fringes of Roddyna, and establish a stronghold there. Your men are to train and practice regularly and are to be SEEN by the general populace doing so. You will also have to resetup your workshops in your new homes. And if you create something that you think could impress the populace, I urge you to show it off. Your inventions are as likely to instill confidence in our people as the military. To help you keep in touch with eachother and with those of us that remain here, and also to allow you to pass word of any invaders or dangers I will also ask one of the Telepathic Engeneers to acompany each of you."

As he spoke he watched the faces of the volunteers brighten. He also noticed that when he mentioned the Engeneers, six of them stepped away from the wall and closer to the table. Yet again again he was amazed at their ability to predict what would be required of them. Victor, the first of the Telepaths had once explained that the group could hold a conversation that would take over a day of speaking in a matter of minutes. So most likely during his first speach the Telepaths had agreed that some service was required of them, and when the Czar stopped more volunteers from standing up by starting his last speech, they had seen that most likely 6 of them would be needed, and had already decided amongst themselves which 6 it would be.

this immage of my continent has two things.
1. the green dots to represent the general direction my 6 border patrol companies are to go in.
2. the red line dividing the continent. this is my guess at what Furey's domain is proposing. its not a counter offer, just trying to figure out what it is that you actualy said. please confirm if this is the border you mean or not. (guess this map is meant for Erik the Mod, not Erik the person playing the NPC Furey's Dominion. i'm not sending this map to them)

@Roddy: Great story. At least two of us are keeping the tradition alive.

Come on, people? Why NES if you don't write stories? You can just go play Civ instead.

The Company
Techmagi Anthony was having a suprisingly good day considering that he was leaving his home for what may be years. The day of the Techmagi Assembly had passed as in a haze. When his uncle (the Czar) had asked for volunteers to lead the military, Anthony had almost jumped. The vast majority of his inventions had a much more military aplication then those of his fellow Techmagi. He had always wanted to use them in real combat but the fight with the Orcs had started and ended too suddenly to have given him a good chance to try many of them.
The week after the Assembly was spent in aquanting himself with his new role. He met his new men, and was pleased to find that one of his childhood friends was the ranking officer in this company. They quickly decided to run the company as a partnership, Anthony will be the strategist and representative of the company, and Peter would be the tactician in battle and the manager of the day to day issues.
The six Telepathic Engeneers and the six Techmagi going with the companies had held interviews with eachother and paired up so that everyone seemed happy with their counterpart. Anthony still wasnt sure if the Techmagi had chosen the Engeneer they wanted or if the Telepaths had chosen the Inventor they most agreed with. He had the suspicion that the Engeneers would describe the process as "the Engeneers helped the Techmagi make the right picks", but he didnt want to know what that "helped" actualy entailed. Mike, the Engeneer going with Anthony, was a happy fellow who like Anthony seemed to love the prospect of being part of the military. Mike had already showed Anthony an invention of his own, that mike recognized as a combination of one of his own inventions and one of Czar Roddy's. Anthony wondered out loud why Mike hadn't become a Techmagi, to which Mike replied "I tinker and fix, I dont realy invent, I'm not obsessed enough with these things as you lot."

Korinov
The Town of Korinov was a recent addition to the Nation of Roddyna on the Western border. They had asked to join the nation when Roddyna's infantry had saved their town from a large group of Orcs. When Anthony and his company arrived in the town, they were warmly greeted and when the news, that the company was here to stay, spread the town organized a feast. The barracks were quickly built on the edge of town, and then construction started on the workshop. At first the town's two blacksmiths were not very happy about the prospect of another forge in town, but when Anthony explained that he not only had no clue of how to shoe a horse, but had no will to learn to, and that he would not take any orders from the townspeople for his forge, they relaxed.
When Anthony wasnt needed for the construction efforts, he traveled to nearby villages and explained the new structure of the Roddyna military to the people. They would now always have a local force to protect them, and in case of an emergency they could instantly summon help from the rest of the military via the Telepathic Engeneers. Anthony wasnt exactly sure where the official border of Roddyna passed so he just visited every village within a half day's travel (so he could get back the same day he left). Some already considered themselves part of Roddyna, some didnt, but all seemed prety happy having a friendly military force nearby.

Yeah I'm too lazy to write stories and what little free time I have,I waste playing AA.

@Roddy: Great story. At least two of us are keeping the tradition alive.
i always though that the tradition is NOT to write stories. so i consider myself the rebel. ;)
i guess i play so few story NESes (this being my second....third if you count... nevermind.... this is second one), the whole reason i join em is to write some stories. but i usualy end up noticing that my stories are repeating themselves, cause i try to write stories about my orders, and then i sort of give up on em.
this time i'm not doing the "story is my orders in detail" thing. well, not as much. just write whatever comes to mind.

Well, I suppose I don't know of any NES traditions, but I figured the reason people joined was to make their own nations and write their backgrounds and memorable events. If I'm not mistaken, there are far more althistoric NESes now compared to a year ago. Just musing.

I enjoy writing stories, and I've read quite nice ones in other NESes as well. Besides, every tradition must begin somewhere. ;)

The giant horizon bird Triss pushed off the ground Lord William mounted on top. He followed General Cedric, leader of the Horizon Warriors. The group of birds flew north outside the makeshift walls the villagers were making. Infront of them lay a giant plains the clashing of swords something made Lord William squint. Before him was the mo0st confusing scene he had ever witnessed. Giant humanoid things wer walking around they had pieces of trees and dirt made into them and they were fighting his soldiers. In front of them one collapsed and imploded.

“Pull Up!!!!” Cedric yelled

The birds flew skywards missing the gas let out by the large creatures by a few feet. Lord william continued to watch as the soldiers fought back the giant earth creatures.

“OK!” William yelled “I’ve seen enough lets move back towards Uta!”

The birds turned and moved away back towards the city. Once the warriors had landed William hurried to his study. Once inside he locked the double doors from the inside. The room was a tall room with a large desk at its center it had a second set of doors allowing access to the Great Hall. The walls were lined with books of history and of myth. He sat at the desk for a while contemplating finally he opend his front door and called to his servant.

“ Call The Generals and The Aeromancers to the Great Hall I will meet them there!”

The servant hurried off. A few minutes later Lord William stepped out his side door connected to the Great Hall. He stood at the front looking at the 12 men standing in the hall.

“Good, We have quite the problem on our hands. We must not lose hope against these foes. Though they come from the earth they are easily defeated.”

“But the gas lord, that is what has been killing the men” one of the Aermancers said

“That is where you come in. We must use the power of the wind to fight back these foes. This is the plan. Cedric you and the Horizon Warriors will fight with the army to incapacitate the monsters. Aeromancers, blow the gas away with your powers. Send it away from the city. Perhaps the gas will kill their monsters. If we are carefull and swift perhaps we can quell these monsters. Meanwhile we will strengthen the army the factories shall commence work on better weapons weapons. Prepare your men and goodluck.”

Swiftly Lord william entered his study again leaveing the Generals and Aeromancers outside.

Orders:
1 Eco
1 Military
Fight off the earth monsters as in my story

Get those orders in!

Update expected tomorrow. It will have lots of nice stuff. :)

Soft light poured in a broad beam down from the mosaic window up under the arched ceiling. The afternoon sun lighted up the drifting dust and gave the room a warm aura. Cymon closed his eyes and focused on his prayer, chanting the holy verses.

“Make every heart bold in face of peril,
Grant safe passage to those who wander,
Grace and fortune to all Thy people,
Change the flow of time through us…”

The chant went on in a level voice, filling the Chamber of Devotions with a monotone hum. Then the voice flourished with a short rapturous melody before returning to the constant gumming again. Once in a while, the chant paused and a drum was played. The combined effect of warm sunlight, quiet hum and rythmic drumpeals caused Cymon to stifle a yawn. Still, it served its purpose of sending him into a trance. Divination was always hard to perform, both fighting the sleep and translating the visions granted by Phion.

The Church of Phion was founded by the late First King Rory. Arkopolis had secured greater dominance over the various city-states through the church, which established in the capital short after the mysterious arrival of Rory Redmantle, later Stonekeeper. As the people of Arkenaar did not have a common organized religion, it soon spread to the bordering city-states. Now, the Church was an unparallelled unifying factor of the kingdom. The Church also brought a common cultural frame for Arkenaar as a whole. Now, nearly all of Arkopolitans were members of the Church, and temples were built in every regional capital of the kingdom.
