erezNES - Waves of Civilization

I would like to announce that the First Wave experiment failed in my opinion. Why? Because every "cradle" is located in Europe.

Now no one can make a nation anywhere else without suffering penalties, this is extremely bad. Not only is it trapping players to the Mediterranean region in what was supposed to be a world spanning game, it does not accurately represent all those who signed up for the NES. It takes away many of the reasons some of us wanted to play the NES all because the players in that time zone all felt like playing european nations.

I will attempt to create a nation out side of Europe to see how it goes and highly encourage like minded players to create a nation in a similar region so that there is less stress on Erez.
While I am the first to admit it mostly failed... I will decide to take this four players into something more resembling a cradle and a half :p rather then all of the game's cradles. I will count it like Sumeria just rise - still more room for many more cradles.

In any case, first wavers, finish up, in less than an hour I'm updating.

That just shows how euro-centric you are.

The dynasties of China were very interesting as were their warring states periods. The rise of the Aztecs was also very interesting as they turned the country into a sort of hunger games country where the conquered people send out tributes to be sacrificed. The constant warring of India with only small times of unity would be a nice place to put down a nation as it would offer you a clear goal and clear enemies with the opportunity for complexity as you weaved alliances.

To say that one place in the world is more interesting saddens me as it shows a lack of comprehension for what went on else where.

EDIT: Gah! Still time to join? Wait for meeeee!

Kingdom of Xian/Patchy
government: Absolute monarchy
Religion: Ancestor worship
Age: Bronze
Stability: Stable
Economy: a mostly agrarian based economy where the government supports itself by taking taxes from the large farmer class.
Projects: None yet
Map: Waves map.png
Information: Located along the northern river of China the Kingdom of Xian formed under the rule of Xian Shi Wen who established his rule over the first large city in china and then built an organized army to extend his rule over the mostly rural farmers that made up most of the river society. Strength and courage in battle is one of the values up held by the Xian as is hard working. Religion is not very important in their day to day lives, mostly focusing on ancestor worship, this led to a lack of a religious elite class that was seen in most other nations. This led to the rise of another class, the scholars who help the government by acting as bureaucrats and also serve to create many of the early works of art. The government keeps it's rule by defending the people from out side invaders and enforcing a highly cetralized society. Unforgettably the more the kingdom expands the less centralized it gets due to not being able to keep control of such a large number of people. Merchants are universally disliked due to making money off of other people's work, they are seen as a necessary evil under the values of the Xian. Meanwhile the nobles are major landowners who employ the poor farmers to work their lands, this dynamic leads to constant friction as the farmers demand for a larger share of their crops and the nobles try to turn as much of a profit as possible.

Fact of the matter is there is a lot more recorded history in Europe than most of the other cradles comparatively. The Aztecs and such are interesting, but Europe's past has been brought to life by large amounts of archaeological work and records kept over time by the civilizations that rose up. Hell, I'd like to be in Japan or China, but I'm more familiar with the European continental geography than China and such.

This happened in TerraNES as well, with more players focused in Keltia/Western Seas than there were in East Asia and the Sumerian areas. But best of luck to you in China.

Thanks, as someone who is very interested in world history I don't think i'll have a problem in china. It just annoys me when people disregard other nations because they don't know much about them. It's not that there is more recorded history of Europe, China had just as well of a recorded history, maybe even more before Mao's Cultural Revolution came in and destroyed a lot of what was left.

I do hope that other players join me in Asia, it's a pretty interesting place.

There will be time to join in half an hour patchy :) when the second wave joins. Just post right after the update and you will be first new sign up :p

And please don't argue about Europe being more interesting. I'm playing EGYPT in Terranes and having a blast.

Should i have to make a repost or will you take the one above?

I was thinking of joining in the Mekong Delta, but I don't want to be so lonely. I might join in China...

Yeah, seems to be the way the game works as long as we wan to keep Erez sane. You could join in south china and conquer your way to Vietnam though.

Good luck erez.

Also, going to join in Non-Europe. ;). I KNOW I LACK TIME BUT THIS IS WORTH IT!

I admit that a big reason I didn't make certain regions more interesting is pure lack of knowledge. Specifically, Iran, India, Mississippi Cultural States and such. Another reason is because little/no rivers=hard city placement. See Arabia, Nubian Desert, and Anatolian Peninsula.

Also, JoanK/Patchy, I might join in the Pearl River Valley/HongKong/Taiwan/Shanghai and link you two up if possible. ;)

EDIT: and.. a bit to late. ah well, I'll join in next update.

Name/player Kingdom of Bentrio
government: Monarchy, though large amount of power distributed to the three merchant noble-houses. king is elected by the noble houses, from among the minor members of the noble houses.
Religion: See Nassiros, though slightly higher emphasis on the goddess of trade, Netteris
Stability: Stable
Economy: Bentrio's economy is based primarily of fishing at this point, but there is a steady and growing trade going through the area that bentrio is growing more focused upon it.
Projects:
Information: Bentrio is a series of three cities all settled near each other next to the bospherous straights. all were intending to try and control the trade that was starting to flow through them. Briefly, they warred with each other, until they realized that their wars would prevent them from establishing any sort of control. so they sought peace. eventually an agreement was reached to bind the cities together, sharing the profits from control of the straights, rather then no one getting them.
of course, subterfuge among the three cities still take place, as each tries to get a leg up on each other. but they refrain from open conflict and anything that would threaten their control of the straights.

Unique unit: Wolfpack- highly trained groups ships, trained to work very well with each other. the more there are, the better they are.

Also, JoanK/Patchy, I might join in the Pearl River Valley/HongKong/Taiwan/Shanghai and link you two up if possible.

That'd be great, Erez did the whole cradle idea because he didn't want to deal with having one player being isolated. By joining together in one place it makes it easier on him.

Also since you join in South China that makes JoanK's Vietnam start more plausible as he can go north to link up with you and I can go south to do the same.

But now I had the idea of starting in South China! :(

Actually I don't have the time for this yet. Perhaps on Monday I will have the time to sort it out.

Watching this; when the Steppes/Northern Asia/Central Asia become active I will join up.

Pre-emptive sign-up for next update:

Armass/Optical
Edit: Map:
Spoiler :
attachment.php

Government: High Council (much like the Roman Senate but more primitive)
Religion: Animism
Age: Bronze
Stability: Stable
Economy: Barter economy based on the region's farming culture. Markets occur every nine days (a cycle of nine days - 'issi' - is the basis of Armassi life) where people trade their excess produce for produce they need.
Projects: None as yet.
Information: Hunter-gatherers settled here to fish and farm; one group on the Arabian Peninsula and the other in Hormuz. The two groups found each other across the straits; their two towns of Fas (on the peninsula) and Armas (on the mainland) quickly saw the wisdom of working together. Now the relatively successful small polity looks toward outside of its borders. The concept of power has entered the world and the Armassi are eager to have it.
Unique unit: Harpoonists use their boat-loaded weapons to catch fish. The Armassi have perfected the technique - it might come in useful against any enemies they encounter.

Update 1, Eurocentric life

Agriculture was certainly not invented in this areas but the records clearly show this areas were the first to develop nation-states that grew, fought and traded.

It all begun on the Chymed coast. As agriculture was introduced from far away there were several population booms that lead to some tribes travel further away, too look for larger farmlands. The immigration was quick and within several decades the entire Chymed coast was already populated by small farming communities. The appearance of Bronze brought another immigration explosion, but as the mountains to the east were far too harsh, this wave took to the sea and settled most of the lands around the Nassiric Sea. While even today most communities are small rural tribes there has been civilized development.

While the rural tribes are nice, the interesting parts are the city-states that developed. The mountainous territory of Chymed and Nettered and the sea immigration made this people more naval oriented then others, and while big ships did not exist yet, trading barges moved across the sea bringing goods from one place to another.

The city of Nassiros was the largest and most civilized of all the city states for many decades, but as other cities begun to rise, their monopoly over trade barges and population size was quickly loosening. Already to their north in Chymed another large city states is growing powerful every day. Troja has great farmlands and vast amounts of food, a much needed product in Nettered. For now Nassiros commands the trade lanes, but this may not last forever.

As Nassiric immigrate westwards their trade barges sometimes got lost in the western seas. When they sometimes returned with many unknown goods, the merchants knew something great was there. And something was indeed there – the trading hub of Romarge was discovered not so long ago, and already Nassiric merchants of different city state flock to this new place and beyond it.

Romarge was not always a powerful trade center. The whole are used to be populated by a vast number of different tribes. No city existed. The different tribes constantly fought wars against each other, but one tribe chose to stay away. When war was fought against it, it remained defensive and survived. As time progressed that tribe eventually achieved peaceful coexistence with its warring neighbors, becoming richer by trading with all other tribes, and growing faster than them.

Eventually that tribe, the Romarge became urban as its population rose far more than the rest, earning more and more from trading with them. The other tribes saw the Romarge sudden rise to power and finally stopped their fighting and allied against the Romarge, but to no avail, the Romarge won the war and united the Romargian straights from both sides. Their marines proved exceptionally important in that war, and has won elite status among the Romargian army.

Located on two sides of a straight, the Romarge took to the sea with small rowing boats and discoevered more tribes with which to trade instead of those that allied against them. Many were found but the more interesting one was the Talon. A small tribe that enjoyed the trade with Romarge the most, quickly gaining population growth and riches above other tribes around itself. The different Talon tribes allied together and became one state under a single king and now begin to look outwards as well. Meeting the Nassiran goods and merchants soon after the Romarge made the Talon far more open to outsiders than others may be, and their interest in the outside world grows fast.

Further to the west, and in strange loneliness grew the Tricarum tribe. They were strong and warlike and pushed away other tribes surrounding them, causing a migration wave both in land and across the sea. Some small scale trade also exist among the tribes, but still this tribal area awaits its own great explosion. While they are lonely their language is early similar to that of the Romarge and a developing writing system seems to be influenced from the east.

Price List:
Mobilizing available units or trade ships costs nothing. Upkeep per turn for every unit or ship is 1.
Training and paying upkeep for a unique unit costs are on the front page.
Designing new unique units is not possible yet.

OOC:
Sorry if this wasn't as good as expected. I didn't get much juice anyway with everyone starting as naval forces or small tribes :p
Anyway:
MoreEpicThanYou – you are free to name the different city states, I named Troja in orange, and you are welcome to rename it too.
Rest – enjoy using your economy and exploring your neighbors, watching them grow next to you.
Everyone – there are no big ships traveling the sea yet. The biggest are medium sized trade barges, and there are free small curraghs for everyone. Building a naval empire at this early age will be hard.

Second wave
5 players are welcome. 3 only need to state their interest to get in.
On the map: Grey are areas you can join in. If you join nearer the current cradle (which is considered one right now) you will probably be LESS advanced unless you join in red or green areas. Green are more developed areas, mostly cultured but less populated and less urban. Red are mostly urban highly populated areas with an high civilization score.

*Yes, I'm shamelessly using the Italian names of Roman gods
