Im just thinking about the last time the Russians were in control. They nearly out-populated the everyone. In 1959, there were more Russians in Kazakhstan than Kazakhs. Somehow, they manage to win back a clear majority.

Yeah but that doesn't equate to treating them badly. Many Russians moved back to Russia post-91.

Probably because the Pro-Russian Support ended with the declaration of a Kazakh republic?

So what happens if you let a bunch of Russians into Kazakhstan again and now there is a government than can make use of its power to support the Russian Kazakhs.

Kazakh is an ethnic group, Kazakhstani a nationality, just to clear it up. I still cant see why you think Russia would mistreat Kazakhs?

I don't think it's a matter of mistreatment, I think it's just the semi-forced Russification of certain regions over the last couple hundred years. People don't forget that kinda stuff.

Hmm.... you need a bit of a history lesson, so read up on Russia's relationship with Iran, Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Angola, Cuba etc etc for Russia's history with non-whites and Muslims.

Last census says 30-something% of them are not white. Other estimates say it could be as high as 60%.

If I were Russian I would be strongly against this based on the ugliness of the new border alone.

It will be pretty appalling looking, no doubt about it... But if Kyrgyzstan can survivie with its stomach-turning frontiers, anything is possible.

Can't see it happening. Even in the USSR, the Russian SSR had its own name. I'm not sure what they would call this if it got off the ground, they would probnably just stick with Union State.

Union State will be shortened to US which maybe confusing and carry dark omens, so personally I would prefer some better name. The flag is good though, it have space for a decent number of stars. At the other side, Union State's proposed coat of arms have space only for four countries which may be insufficient .

Ah, this is a very good point. FWIW, I think that only Belarus and Abkhazia will join, Kazakhstan will be so close as to almost be a member though. But things will have to change in Minsk first. Lukashenko will either have to die, hand over the reigns to someone else in his party, or Belarus will have to suffer such a total economic collapse as to have no choice. Which is unlikely, its actually not doing as bad as one would think these days (although that has a lot to do with Russian subsidies). One would hope Belarus' social security system would not be dissassembled though, its vastly superior to Russia's.

Well, they invaded Afghanistan some time back, you know. Plus, Russia subjected all of the Turkestan region, invaded the Ottoman Empire several times, also meddled in persian affairs. Still, all of the Euroean Powers played with the rest of the world as if they were toys, so the Russians weren't the only naughty boys in the yard.
