Eurasian Union

IIRC Uzbeki's hate Russians, as do other various Central Asians.

For example Kazakhs. And what kind of economic alliance can there be between Kazakhstan and Russia ? Everything in Kazakhstan ends up in the pockets of its "President for life", elected with a realistically democratic 99.9% votes.

Customs union was signed recently, next step is common economic space (single market). Also Kazakhstan is interested in military cooperation (unsurprisingly, as they can not protect themselves on their own).

Well, Nazarbayev is only slightly higher then Putin on the "dictatorship meter" (the higher, the worse). So I don't think the economic systems will be that uncombatible.

Putin, Nazarbayev, Lukashenko... hey, it's democracy in action. Each and every one of those countries follows the "one man, one vote" rule, as explained by T. Pratchett.

Well, from economic point of view it plays out better than «free for all democracy» Ukraine-style, or suicidic liberal democracy of Baltic States.

saying that Putin, Nazarbayev and Lukashenko are autocratic wanna-be tyrants does not imply that the other former Soviet States are doing well.

Ukraine is like Russian 1990's all over again...

Do you mean that an ukrainian Putin will come out of the present chaos?

You really have a hard time stomaching the relative success on their own of the tiny Baltic states, don't you?:D

I wouldn't discard that possibility. Granted, in some ways Ukraine is better then 90's Russia (its troubled region with separatist leanings, Crimea, is kids' game compared to Russian Caucasus, for example), but total corruption in the government + competitive politics present, even though the competitors are shady characters + relatively high freedom of speech + growing apathy and tiredness of the population from the whole thing reminds me of pre-Putinist era.

One can only hope. Though the world may explode with the awesomeness of two Putin's.
My reactions went like this:
:confused:-->:twitch:-->:eek:-->:lol:-->:rotfl:
They are through 90s for a second time. Personally I think Ukraine will collapse. Their problem is that they have no elite which is interested to save the country.
not even as a means of gaining personal power and status... that is sad indeed.

You think Ukraine is particularly more corrupt than Russia was/is during the oligarchs? (And technically the oligarchs are still around, only they're Putin's cronies now.)

The corruption ratings I've seen place both countries as rather corrupt.

That's why I'm wondering how could there be some country significantly more corrupt than China, until I see Russia. Then I'm not surprised of how corrupted Ukraine is. Anyway, Ukraine is just a small Russia.

what I meant to say is that the alliance is among their leaders, and the populace isn't concerned at all. It does not matter how much asian ex sovietic republics peoples hate russians.

Well, hate leads mostly to grief and poverty, so something wise have to leave it aside.
