Farewell Zidane!

A horsehockey way to end a career maybe, but then again also something to be remembered.

So Materazzi said that Italy were guarenteed to win the cup and Zidane decided that if he couldn't win the cup he would make sure he was remembered for another reason? :)

A true great, but he was part of two of the clubs I hate, Juve and Real Madrid.

I will always remember his goal in the CL Final of 2002 vs. Bayer Leverkusen. Cross ball from R. Carlos, and perfect shot from Zizou. One of the best goals I've seen.

Zidane, Zidane.. a true great.

One thing I like about him is his humility.

Unlike other top players (Beckham, Maradona) he wasn't arrogantly flashy off the court, or into decadence. You would never catch this dude with a sarong around his head. He was simply a wizard on the court, a shy family man off of it.

Admirable.

Without a doubt, one of the greatest of his generation.

He himself chose the way to leave the stage, though.

An outstanding player with a career ending not worth to him. Although he was known to have his "destructive" moments, too. I remember the 4:4 of the HSV against Juve in the CL. There he was also playing a bull- with the very same consequence. Sad and undeserved ending. But what the hell was the reason?

I can only say: why Zidane, why?

Eventually he will be remembered for the great player he was, but in the annual sports review at the end of the year you will see the images of the head-butt and Zidane leaving the pitch with his head down.
That's not the way to end a brilliant career...

Yeah I meant Algerian..

He was born in Marseille but his parents were Algerian, he has both Algerian and French citizenship. Apparently the Algerian national coach rejected Zidane because he was too slow :p I bet he regrets that decision.

I'm sad that he has finished his career in the way he has, but I don't think it's tragic or unrepresentative. Too often footballers are canonised after their retirement, and only the good that they do is remembered. With Zidane there was much, so much, that was good. But there was always a dark side to him as well; he has a violent side to his personality which too often found its expression on the football field.

Any recollection of Zidane will no doubt rightly focus on the talent he had, and the great gaols he scored and created. But now, no epitaph to Zizou can ignore that dark side, and I think that is probably appropriate as well.

I read - not sure how true it is - that Zidane has been sent off more times in his career than Roy Keane. Not so out of character then.

Zidane is my new hero. :king:

Maybe, Zidane used to have one bad temper reputation when he was at Cannes and Bordeaux in his earlier days, though lately learned to control it, except for some notorious moments of madness.
But anyway, I guess that with video evidence being used, Keane would have probably beat him. ;)

There was a lot of criticism about Zidane's headbutt. Very poor technique. Duncan Ferguson would not have approved. You dont headbutt someone in the chest. You aim for just above the nose.

Duncan Ferguson was convicted of assault for doing it in a game of football and was sent to prison.

Two thieves broke into his house. Both needed hospital treatment when the police arrived.

Well, you can say whatever you want about that headbutt, but that penalty was truly the best ever.

Actually in the second round Milevski did a much better Panenka than Zidane did in the final...

In a way I'm glad that Zidane is retiring: now France will have to learn to play without him, and not put everything on one player :)

But he brought a lot to football, he gave us a World Cup and an European Title, so he will be missed.
Bon vent, Zizou :)

Yes, it's true. He was the best, just for the courage showed in kicking the penalty that way (Totti did that but after all in a European cup semifinal and against a crappy gk (Van der Sar))
