Major Changes
Many peoples were increasingly migrating from the lands west of the cradle destabilizing and even toppling empires. Feudalism which was government yet to be seen at all is suddenly taking center stage as Terra Trifluentia moves towards it and it creates a mess in Fizcat.
Now the barbaric migrations were mostly easily fought off with Tephen the barrier between barbaric lands and civilized lands. Tephen finally lost to a powerful tribe called the Rastion. The tribes united by a warlord (As usual) managed to inflict powerful defeats on Tephen taking a nice of chunk of land and killing anyone living there. They continued south attacking Terra Trifluentia pushing them out of much of their territories along the Animas River. These tribes now make up the majority of much of their lands as more and more their own peoples migrate to feel the vast new tracks of conquered lands. A new kingdom is set up with a sparse and spread out population which is perhaps their biggest weakness at the moment.
Fizcat was obviously a mess at the moment when we last met it but it had grown even more decentralized over the years. The great ruler Azan II had managed to increase Fizcat’s population through the socially liberal reforms and encouraged immigration of Atheists across the Great Sea but the country was fractured. The nobles had too much power the Duke not enough. The country even though divided had a fierce stance against foreign invaders. The various states of Fizcat would always make a stand to drive away foreign invaders which kept the nation from being colonized or conquered. Fizcat’s realms even grew much faster as local nobles extend their power to the frontier lands even independently driving away Bhatonia. Fizcat has long been waiting for a ruler to rebuild the fractured nation.
Azan II, led a nation united when he died but constant foreign attacks by the revitalized Bhatoists once again led to instability. With his only powerful allies Ilion and Tereno now waging war against each other the Fizcathians once again turned to feudalism. The Tower of Sanctuary gives the Duke some limited control over the Fizcathian realms but only limited control. Under new and capable rulers much of the original Fizcathian peninsula is united but the frontier regions remain rebellious and powerful. However, this has served Fizcat but their independent expansions westward.
The title of Duke is now chosen by an election of the various nobles. There has yet to have been a duke elected who wishes to bring unity back to the region. However, the spread of the philosophies of Atheism has never been forgotten and is now a permanent faith in the cradle.
Terrra Trifluentia dominated the western part of the cradle. No power could oppose the Patriarch and now power could oppose their faith. The good did not last forever with foreign invasions and even a renewed conflict with Taruq and the Sky Gods the country destabilized. The countries many patriarchs began to argue and debate the point of constant warfare. Many began to refuse paying taxes or sending their men off to fight distant wars that did not concern them. With the entry of Rastion on the scene and the inadequate forces to fend them off the country suffered devastating defeats forcing themselves to surrender all land north of the Animas River.
Although things look bad Terra Trifluentia is still a rich populated empire. The core remains united to the cause of the empire and has great potential in rebuilding itself. The strange balance if power holds Taruq and Sky Gods fearing they may leave themselves in a three way war. This region really is a mess diplomatically and that has saved Terra Trifluentia from looking like Fizcat.
Major Events
Ilion-Terenese War
Tereno’s conversion to Bhatoism greatly disturbed the leaders of Ilion which had grown increasingly anti-Bhatoist. In fact they outlawed the worship of Bhatoism within their borders causing great unrest in Nos. Ilion quickly cracked down on the Bhatoist majority killing tens of thousands. In the years that followed Nos refused to submit and the Bhatoist states began to back up the idea that Nos be given some form of freedom. The Ilionese Empire refused to back down. When Tereno became sympathetic to the Nos cause the Ilionese King (or dicatator???) grew paranoid. He was now surrounded by feverishly religious revival of the Bhatoist states and with Tereno he knew he could not allow this continue. Things quickly escalated into war…
Tereno had the backing of the Holy Bhatoist Empire of Neptanian and what remain of the Bhatoist alliance. Tereno just decimated the Ilionese on land with their allies. On land it was a very different story. Ilion managed to muster up the largest army the world had yet to see in its invasion of Tereno. An army of almost hundred thousand men crossed into Tereno. This expertly trained army fought with a ferocity never before seen by the Terenese. The Bhatoist Crusaders were the only ones able to make a stand against them in the battlefield saving Tereno itself. The peace of Milani was established between Ilion and Tereno. Tereno was to cede more then half their nation to Ilion and become a client state to the now proclaimed Ilionese Empire. The city of Turinan is to become a vassal of the Ilionese empire similar to the Nos state. The city of Corenwal is also to be given independence as well as part of the traditional Ilionese lands. Ilion had completed the goal it had set out to do divide the power of Tereno its only threat to the state but that turned out to be dead wrong.
A Silver Lining??
Tereno had suffered a disastrous defeat at the end of the wars with Ilion. However, there was a silver lining to this defeat. The ancient city of Tereno became a center of culture for one main reason. With the countries military largely dismantled or destroyed during and after the war the kings following concentrated on building on its still existing colonial empire. Many colonies still existing in the Great Sea Ilion saw useless remained in Tereno’s hands. With the growing population in the north and the growing trade opportunities the colonies grew vastly in wealth. Ilion soon realized its folly because Tereno was now a wealthy tiny nation. The wealth of Tereno was no longer poured into the army or navy but the arts. Tereno became a city filled with glorious architecture worthy of the ages. The scholars from the Wells of Ages named Tereno one of the world’s greatest cities.
Ilion prepared for a second war against Tereno but soon found itself in a war against wealthy enemies.
Defeat of New Tereden
Rastion was the new Taruq. It was the sole threat to the valley but this time it threatened different nations along with same old people. As mentioned before these people had inflicted humiliating defeats on great powers. New Tereden was the next in line to fall to the new horde.
The details of the invasion are sketchy at best since most of the inhabinits were killed by the invaders and Rastion’s wise men largely failed to create any lasting stories. All that is know that half the country fell. The western heavily fortified half the nation held out until peace was finally established. New Tereden became a vassal of Hylon in order to save itself from annexation. Hyoln has aggressively spread Dualism in their new found vassal converting a majority of the populace.
The state of Rastion
Rastion was originally a group of small group of tribes living along the mountains north of the mountains of Tephen. Due to pressure from another migrating tribe they retreated into Tephen for safety. There they would live for 50 or so odd years preparing a large militia. When the Tephenese Emperor heard of this possible source of manpower and soldiers he asked the tribes to join his military. They flat out refused which in angered the Emperor. The Emperor sent his army to push them out of the country which turned into a disaster for Tephen.
Tephen sent a much smaller force believing the enemy force would be easy to crush. Now each side was relative even in manpower but Tephen was more experienced and armed better. However, Rastion was lead by a warlord who ambushed the Tephenese in the various mountain passes avoiding a decisive battle until the enemy was whittled down. He struck finally being victorious. Once again details are sketchy as Tephen was embarrassed while Rastion struck down all survivors. Over the years the Rastion tribes migrated southwards gaining strength and momentum creating a large empire you could call it stretching across the interior of the cradle.
Militaristic Hyoln
Hyoln had been largely considered the most peaceful state in the cradle. Wells of Ages had considered these people pacifists just doing war if nessecary. This radically changed because Hyoln had been aggressively expanding against barbaric tribes often slaughtering them to the last man. The event that ushered in this change is unknown. Many believe because the council had slowly grown corrupt and greedy from the power. They began to claim for “religious” reasons Hyoln must bring the faith of Dualism to much farther then their own borders. When it was most likely just the council trying to gain more realms to tax and exploit the wealth of the previous inhabitants. Those within the council that even disagreed with the military expansion were quickly executed. A change is brewing in Hyoln whether it will bring great wealth and power or the end of the state remains to be seen.
Ilioni Empire
The Ilioni Empire had never existed despite for centuries of maintaining the most powerful land army in the valley. The Ilioni were known for their military expertice and considered the masters of war in the Wells of Ages. T’lur Pa in fact copied many Ilioni tactics and training which helped them succeed in subduing many barbaric tribes threatening their colonies. The Ilioni finally had a paranoid ruler to bring the idea of empire to reality.
After the wars with Tereno left Ilion with only Hyoln and Vencia opposing their power which they actively did funding a Vlakan invasion of the northern lands of Ilion. The Vlakan which had disappeared in the chapters of history finally be hired by various merchant nations as mercenaries were once again center stage in history. The Valkan had brought anarchy to all the rural areas in the north while Ilion was distracted in the south. The peace gained finally allowed Ilion to turn to the north. They know now who had funded the Valkan and the Ilioni Empire thirsts for revenge.
Bhatoist Empire Reborn
The Holy Bhatoist Empire of Neptanian collapsed after the volcanic eruption left much of Neptania in ruins. In 405 A.N. (After Neptanian) the island was wracked by a good sized eruption burying much of the city of Neptania in molten rock. In the chaos that ensued it was found the religious council had survived which was seen as a blessing. However, the empire could no longer hold together. This was the beginning of a fracture that eventually led to the creation of a Bhatoist Empire on the mainland. They declared themselves the guardians of Neptania. Neptania remained in control of their island establishing the Neptanian Bhatoist Council as supreme rulers of the island and the religious leaders of Bhatoism as before. Their power soon once again shrunk when Corenwal seized the city of Rethalgow from the religious council promising to fund the construction of a grand cathedral for the faith as well as providing naval protection for the island.
Corenwal Revival
Corenwal with the fall of Tereno’s once constricting power rebuilt their merchant power. They regained the isles of Fretania and the city of Rethalgow. The navy was also rebuilt adopting the Scilani design. The Bhation is the new ship named after the devout faith which Corenwal has followed for centuries. Tereno and Corenwal are allies in name but fight a fierce merchant war.
Dilhava Empire
Dilhava largely had not expanded or lost much ground. The country turned towards developing and civilizing the vast tracks of conquered land so it was actually profitable. A brief war against a distracted Taruq earned some small gains to the west. Dilhava, is going through a period of interal growth and domestic building. The policies of aggressive expansion have long been abandoned as it was more profitable to build on what it already has.
Dilhava is now 99% Bhatoist with most religious minorities driven out or immigrating to other lands. Atheists which once had a large minority here have long been driven out long ago by the extreme Bhatoist elements which thrive. Dilhava was expected to lead a new Bhatoist League but their failure to aide the crusades or help the alliance militarily ended this.
T’lur Pa Colonial Empire
T’lur Pa is smaller and weaker militarily. This is because of one simple reason and that is Taruq. Taruq came back and T’lur Pa fighting alone lost. T’lur pa, however, managed to keep a majority of their original borders. T’lur Pa was the first to apply the use of iron working to the armies and used it in the first battle with iron recorded against natives on the frontiers of its Ramain colony against a large barbarian raid. The iron was also applied to other uses but the Wells of Ages which is open to scholars around the Great Sea the knowledge quickly spread. T’lur Pa saw the decline of land available to colonize so they took whatever openings available.
As of now T’lur Pa commands one of the larger colonial empires in the Great Sea and their heavily populated homeland remains the center of the arts and education for the Great Sea. When Taruq finally fades into the dusts of history perhaps there will be a Empire of T’lur Pa.
Challenge to Ilioni Supremacy
The Ilioni Empire was for the first time challenged. Hyoln and Vencia were actively funding barbaric raids against Ilion’s northern lands and the center piece of their peace was gone. Tereno broke away from Ilion destroying the little Ilion garrisons in the area. Tereno quickly allied with the Bhatoist States. Ilion facing the threat of war against all her neighbors backed down. Ilion will just have to wait or perhaps try and create a united Fizcat state as a powerful ally against the Bhatoist hordes.
The Iron Age
All nations within the Great Sea are now in the Early Iron Age. T’lur Pa is closest to entering the Late Iron Age. T’lur Pa will receive bonuses were the leading nation in philosophy, culture, and science
Huming Cradle
Huming during this period begins to once again centralize authority as the country moves towards a central monarch in charge. The Zhu family began to wage a war within the country causing a period of warring states. The seven families’ waged war for many years trying to gain control over the core of the country. Finally, the superior Zhu family defeated the others. The new imperial family granted amnesty to the other families giving them a lower status of noble. In the years that followed Huming expanded rapidly to the coast running upon two new nations. One was the Shanhing Empire which was as powerful as Huming in terms of troops but Huming has an economic edge.
Torda is also discovered a peninsular nation jutting out of Shanhing. Torda is a vassal to the Shanhing Empire. The people of Torda are a more war like society surviving centuries of wars against Shanhing. An agreement was reached creating peace allowing Shanhing to recruit Torda as mercenaries. Things do not look probable that Torda will remain at peace for much longer.
