Do you have any favourite abbreviations in your own language.

In French, I think the nicest one is K7 (this is a good way of writting cassette - "k sept":)

Does anyone know any other good ones?

I cant think of any off the top of my head but I like the k7 very much and will try to use it myself:)

LOIA (pronounced "lawyer")
Lover Of Irrelevant Abbreviations

RTFM (= Read the f***ing manual) :mischief:

Yeah,

DICK

Dedicated Infantry Combat Killer.

DDR - Deutsche Demokratische Republik
(German Democratic Republic)
I loved it. In (West) Germany, some papers/publishers (that doubted the sovereignty of the GDR) have always printed a quotation "DDR", e.g.
'The government of the "DDR" pointed out...'. Furthermore, the whole (not shortened) expression wasn't hardly used.

MYOFB, ROC, WTH, DDR, DICK, RTFM, LOIA, N.E.D...

These are all acronyms.

An abbreviation would be something like 'etc...' or 'ref:' (reference). Where you shorten just a single word or two into a few brief letters (often ending with a period).

I kind of like 'bzw' (beziehungsweise). German should have a LOT more abbreviations.

I like UDI = unidentified drinking injury
and NFG = No (darn) good

No, an acronym is a type of abbreviation. An abbreviation is a shortening of one or more words. An acronym is an abbreviation that uses some letters of multiple words (usually the first ones). If you want to see for yourself, go to dictionary.com. :)

As for my favorites, hmm... Well, I seem to use AFAIK (as far as I know) a lot.

I like the military ones from WWII:

SNAFU and FUBAR.

They're applicable pretty often in my life ...
