Probably this depend of language..in Portuguese the words for Indians(Americans and Asians) are different..but English,Spanish French..are the same word..

But this thing of Dots or Feathers is completely new to me

no. people from india stereotypically have red dots and native american chiefs have/had those feather headdresses, so people will sometimes ask if you mean "dots or feathers" when you say "indian." it's probably just an american thing.
