Do we mean "emo" as in "emotional hardcore", or "emo" as in "anything a bit gloomy and a singer with eyeliner"? Given your above post, I'm assuming the latter...

I think the OP means is what music you listen too when running around town bashing emos

well The Smiths are the proverbial 'emo' band imho and I say that not as a slight against them but as a longtime admirer of their music. if anything it would be a slight against the term 'emo' since it has been coined so recently and has been a "trend" for such a short amount of time while it describes something that has been around for a long, long time. weird haircuts and sad music have been around since before this century...

The Smiths
1987

PS: not to mention that blues is probably the original emo music, sans the haircuts and the black t-shirts. heck, the one or two classical requiems I heard.... how about a nice rendition of ave maria? you kids, it has all been done *grumpy old man*

the Blues are pretty depressing sometimes

heres some

this is about an alcoholic thats so desperate to get drunk that hes drinking sterno (canned heat) which is basically jellied alcohol

Linkin Park
I wouldn't have thought they come under the standard definition. Had a look on wiki and both weezer and Jimmy Eat World are apparently 'emo' and I like them, so probably them.

Though would the Smiths or Joy Division count as 'emo'? are hadouken emo or punk?

It is quite hard to define it.
Emo also means more popular with 12 year old angsty kids and less about musical style. But as far as style goes, most emo sounds like generic american punk with a an influence from american hardcore. (especially in the emocore/screamo subgenre)

Black people can't be emo.

I appreciate that is one definition of 'emo' music but that only defines some of it. For instance the smiths aren't generic american punk but their music is at times far more emotional than other types of music.

I believe Linkin park just about fits your description of 'more popular with 12 year old angsty kids and less about musical style' and so i agree with you if that was your point :)

Oh i never said the smiths or joy division are emo !

I guess we could say emo is just depressing pop punk. Joy Division and the Smiths are most definetley post-punk. Besides, the smiths are too depresingly happy and optimistic (if that makes any sense) to be too angsty.

Also am i am curious, do people equate sad music with angsty music ?

Yes but I meant that I was, if the very definition of emo is simply 'emotional music' just defining it as post American punk/hardcore isn't really an adequate description because even in it's 'emo' form it has been around at least twenty years which would be pre American punk/hardcore :)

I do understand what you mean, the way it's sung is happy but the connotations of what is being said is sometimes hideously upsetting!

If emo music is merely emotional music than all my favorites are emo (spurning emotion).

Now that I think about it I change my vote from Smashing Pumpkins to Tupac, he was a total emo. :D
