Fed up residents repair road in 8 days -- for free

When people can prove they can work together without the restrictions of bureaucracy, what's the point of forcing it upon them?
Personal pleasure.

I think this proved that people will go to extreme lengths to protect their own interests, nothing about socialism. After all, they fixed the road so their companies wouldn't go out of business.

Of course it is speculation just as you and everybody else is doing. Or have ever been there yourself? Or are you omniscient?

To do what you feel you must so your business doesn't go bankrupt is now "civic engagement"?

Why do you take everything so personally? You come off as an oversensitive individual.

I based my bridge claim on the pictures.

And do you even know what civic engagement is? I don't even understand what you are trying to argue here.

Why do you take everything so personally?.

Because you accused me of speculation for merely disagreeing with your own opinion when you were doing exactly the same thing?

You come off as an oversensitive individual.

And you come off as someone who doesn't think much before posting.

And do you even know what civic engagement is?

What this apparently is not? The local surfers and the business owners who used the park on a regular basis fixed the road so they could use the park. That's not civic engagement. It's looking out for your own self-interests. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Formie, you pick an argument in every single goddamn thread, usually over nothing. I even recall threads where you suddenly turned on people who agreed with you on everything except one little point, calling arguments they were using that actually echoed your own strawmen, yet using several dozen yourself. You're either oversensitive or just a persistent and especially annoying troll, take your damn pick.

You say this after you admitted you were speculating? So you get oversensitive when people make truthful statements? I even asked you if you have any pictures to share with us to give you the chance to prove yourself.

Civic engagement has been defined as "Individual and collective actions designed to identify and address issues of public concern." - Wikipedia (American Psychological Association)

You do realize that we all have self interests invested in our community right? Yes, when I volunteer to clean up the parks in my neighborhood, I'm doing it because it raises my property's value!

Look, no one's denying they are looking out for themselves when they fixed the roads. So you can stop repeating that part over and over again. You are not disproving anything. That's like saying the theory of gravity is false because the sky is blue. It's just so obtuse.

/facepalm

Indeed.

And please stop adding your own comments in the middle of a quote so it appears that you are quoting me instead of responding. Besides just now, you did so a couple of times in the other thread...

That's the best response you could give? Formie, you used to be a lot snappier in the past...
Everybody does such irrelevant mistakes sometimes, BTW.

Government's only job should be protecting citizen's rights. Anything else can be done ten times cheaper, better, and faster by private businesses.

That statement is backed up by the specifics of this situation, but what about when the project is more complex, like a large bridge across a big river, or an interstate highway project? Doesn't the government have the power and size to oversee/coordinate these projects better than private businesses?

Also - doesn't the government have the responsibility to look after all of the citizens best welfare rather than the special interests of a few powerful corporations?

We aren't even allowed to plow our roads if the city forgets to do it (usually happens about once a year). Any one have any idea how hard it is to get a lowered Toyota Supra with summer tires through 5" of snow?

Does that include particle accelerators?

As for the road fix, keep in mind that the participants included local businesses and not just ordinary citizens. Sharwood's point that it was in their vital interests to do so is also important. And mere appearances are not true judge of structural integrity.

 Objectivists are so cute.

The better question here is why are you trying to drive a lowered Toyota Supra with summer tires in the winter in NY/MA? :p

I like a challenge. Besides, sometimes my brother is using the old Accord, which is also a pain to drive through that much snow, but it does it because Honda used to know how to make a beast of a car.
