When it comes to the past & trying to understand present behavior what else can we do but make up theories that makes sense & are universal?

Make historically specific theories about specific things?

What about human universals? Obviously my surname thing was a bad example but there do exist human universals. Religion/spiritual beliefs for one. Coming of age rituals. Cooperation. Warfare. Rituals involving drugs (up until the modern age anyway).

You have to pin down what those terms mean in any given context, though. It's too easy to take the words in their narrowly modern, Western sense and assume that everything else is just the same thing playing out in ethnic and/or period costume.
