Feud II: Rebirth

On the government:

Pros to Republic:
Lets all the immortals stay in power (keeps revolution away)
Keeps us from being reliant on one person for decisions
Changes the way power is gained. Instead of being reliant on armed men to enforce your position as Chief, its centered on peacefully convincing people to support you, and thus is more stable.
Provides a check to the power of any one person, so rash decisions are less likely.

Cons:
Slower to act than one high chief with absolute power.

Depends on how harsh the winter is and how prepared you guys are. If you just decide to pack up and start moving during the winter, maybe 10% of the Tribe.

So, if we find a way to save food, and use 3/4ths of the year to prepare for movement in the last quarter it will be much lower. I find that acceptable.

Excellent. I'll add you to the front page.

As always, I'll be here for a year (four turns) for questions.

Legislature:
1.
Aiolos, while your system of governance is certainly ambitious in its attempts at equality, I fear that some of what you have proposed is a bit vague. What exactly would fall under the scope of the "upper house" and the "lower house"? How many members would belong to the lower house? Who would select the members of the lower house? How would decisions be made in both houses? What would become of the position of Elder Council? Also, I feel that the ability to act swiftly will be key to the tribes survival, particularly in case of invasion. Who would lead our men into battle to defend the tribe?

Also, I do no believe that we can devote anyone to the position of "specialist" at this time.

2. I have a couple of names that I would like to propose for our tribe. First, is the unimaginative Hoosiers. The other is the completely random Candraqa.

Foreign:
1.
At the current time, trade seems to be a impractical goal, what with the lack of goods as well as any determined trade route. However, it is important to that we gain an understanding of the neighboring tribes, so to assess their threat to us. A small scouting party would be ideal for this task. I would suggest that a single hunter be sent with a single bodyguard, so that they do not wander of and get lost, thus negating any benefit we might gain from the expedition. I would like to suggest that the first tribe that they should investigate should be the one directly north of us (the orange one in Michigan).

I would also like to propose that we appoint and send out one of our number (an immortal) to accompany the expedition. This man/woman would take the position of ambassador, as opposed to the bodyguard.

Military:
1.
I believe that the bodyguards' main task should be to protect those in the government. This "Black Guard" (don't ask me why I thought of this name, it was the first to come to mind) would accompany the ruler/rulers both within the village and on trips to other tribes.

Internal:
1.
In terms of the wasted food, the only thing I do is agree with Aiolos and advise that the tribe look for methods to preserve food, including looking for salt.

Science and Innovation:
1.
(OOC: Before I say anything about this, I must first ask Sonereal a question: Are you using real life figures to determine how much fish/game/edible plants we will find? If not, what are you using?)

Migration: While I believe that migration may be beneficial to our tribe, might I suggest an alternative destination than the coast?
Spoiler :

The green region with the yellow circle is where I propose that we might sojourn to. As it borders one of the Great Lakes, it must have an abundance of fish, and there is a large amount of salt in region. (OOC: Trust me on this. As a native to the area, I can assure you that there are large salt deposits in the region. They don't call Syracuse the Salt City for nothing. Plus, New York is considered a major agricultural state.) Also, the terrain is less rugged than if we went straight for the coast.

OOC: Another question: Do we have pointed sticks yet?

Also, if we do need a religion/faith, I think that Sonereal should come up with it, as opposed to any of the players.

Why the hell do we need salt deposits? Plus, we can't even mine it effectively.

I would say that someone should be assigned the roll of Marshal. He will lead the men into battle, and have a seat in the council.

Upper House: The policy decisions that we the gamers make are the ones that belong here. Long term planning, diplomacy, that sort of thing. Basicly, if we are dealing with it, its upper house.

Lower House: The small everyday things. More of a way to RP than anything. I would say it would be filled by 1 old master of each "craft" or discipline. So the grandfather that was the best hunter, the old woman who knows everything about children and childbirth exc...

Also, I do no believe that we can devote anyone to the position of "specialist" at this time.
I'm thinking CivIII style here... But assigning someone directly to a task has benefits. We'll progress faster, certainly.

Candraqa

Fair enough. I just am looking for a use of the body guards that dosent involve them eating our food.

Eh... What about the protection of the people we rule? I have no problem with the idea of a despotism, I just dont think it will be as effective.

Good.

I would like to know this as well...

Fine by me. It'll be a bit quicker too.

Makes sense... We have a prophet in our camp ;)

Why the hell do we need salt deposits? Plus, we can't even mine it effectively.
Its the most effective way to save food. Its also neccessiary for the metabolism. We'll be much more healthy with salt, and we can TRADE it! We can mine it, actually. Salt is typically close to surface, and is softer than rocks.

Plus, salt is generally found in Western Asia, not Illinois. I personally think our tribe should be the Iroquois.

Yes, or Africa. As he says though, its there. (thank you google).

This looks interesting. Can I join?

Yes.

For the first question: I am not using real life figures. I started it off "easy" for the tribe so each Hunter brought in five food each but in reality, that's Hunters+Gatherers. Food gathering in an area is highest during the summer, lowest during the winter, and changes and diminishes the longer you stay in an area and hunt. Not to mention that having too many hunters can screw you over and, as time goes on, the amount of game you can bring in the region altogether will shrink.

Food was wasted this time around. But the amount of food gathered through hunting will decrease the more and more people hunt.

As for real life figures: The number for this first round was actually kinda loose. As such, there's an abnormally high amount of wildlife in the region which is why the hunters will be able to get so many this year. As time goes on, it will become a problem and may lead to emigration.

For fish and salt? I'll do some research for things you guys do and make educated guesses.

Second question: The Tribe can easily learn to sharpen sticks. They do know to use stones and whatnot to sharpen sticks. They just haven't implied their knowledge yet.

Finally, religion. The Tribe is pretty much Animist (I believe that's the right term) so no need for any religion standings yet. As agriculture starts to sink it, religion will emerge either on its own or through help. Starting a religion is a crapshoot however.

We aren't having sophisticated republics as a native american tribe in antiquity, so STFU.

Less sophisticated than the Iroquois. It's based on tribal principles, "council of elders" really, just with immortals.

Don't worry about it. We haven''t even gotten past three pages. There isn't anything that established that will put you at a disadvantage. We are still discussing the tribe course of action for this turn.

Speaking of which, we still need to devise a system of rule and succession, as well as appoint a new Elder Chief. This should be taken care of before anything else, in my opinion. So far, the only two options are 1) continuing with the absolute power of the Elder Chief, and 2) setting up the quasi-republican model proposed by Aiolos. I would also like to take this opportunity to ask if anyone is willing to put forwards their name as a candidate for Elder Chief.

each turn gives you important bonuses to your aristocratic family. Otherwise wouldn't it be an advantage to start late?

Not as many as you think. Especially early in the game.
