FfH2 Bug Thread

If you're experiencing a problem with Orbis, it's probably best to report that somewhere in the Orbis subforum, although I don't know when Orbis was last updated or if it's still being patched/developed.

Have a save where the Avatar of Wrath is causing a hang--just sits on "Waiting for Other Civilizations." I've backed up about fifty turns and changed what I was doing (so it was triggered by an AI civ and not mine), same thing. Have left it for four hours, no change.

Is there anything to be done, or is it a lost cause, and on to the next game?

This is the infamous 'Avatar of Wrath' bug. Unfortunately, I've never solved exactly what needs to be done to change it. Deleting the Avatar of wrath doesn't fix the problem.

The only solution is to keep trying different things and hope you get lucky.

Best wishes,

Breunor

By "different things," just replaying the game in different ways to see what happens? I've actually saved the game after a bunch of hours, so I guess I could go into WB at that point--anything to look for there?

And, I assume this is a "sometimes the Avatar of Wrath causes this," not a "never let the A/C get to 90, because it always happens" thing?

Thanks for the reply, Breunor.

Yes, it is a very 'bad' bug because:

1. It doesn't always happen (the infinite loop bug) when the Avatar of Wrath shows up. There is no easy way to tell how common it is, since not everyone getting the bug reports it, and of course people who get the Avatar of Wrath without the WoC (the infinite loop, standing for 'Waiting for other Civilizations' which displays on the screen endlessly) usually don't report it. Therefore, we can't tell what percentage of games getting to AC 90 get the bug.

Indeed, we didn't even know if the last patch cured the problem or not, although we didn't think so since Kael didn't mention fixing it. It has been around for a while. Your reporting it helps to establish that indeed it is still here.

2. The second reason it is a 'bad' bug is that I have spent a lot of time 'fixing' crashed or WoC games by having people send me the savegame, and then using the worldbuilder to fool around and fix it. I probably fix about 80% or more of the files that are sent - however, my record with the Avatar of Wrath bug is closer to 25%.

If you want, I can try for you - upload a save from the turn before and I'll see if I can fix it, but as I said, not often for this bug. I also haven't done it in a while.

3. Trying 'different things' (to throw the RNG off mostly) also rarely works. The reason we say to try it is exactly from the information above; sometimes the Avatar of Wrath appears and no bug. Therefore, this tactic is pretty much luck based. Try something different, maybe you will be OK. As I said, it doesn't happen often but it has been reported to work a few times.

4. The leading theory, with NO evidence excpet for a little intuition, is that the bug is caused by all of the units getting enraged - but deleting the enraged units also doesn't usually work, perhaps because the random number that enraged some unit, now deleted, will likely get passed to another unit. This theory may be totally wrong.

Good luck!

Downloaded your stuff last night Tholal. Issue there is that my daughter has a game she is engaged with, and my understanding is installing your mod ruins her save.

Breunor, no need to bother with trying to fix it, although, if you have some advice on what has worked sometimes, I am happy to try to find things in WB.

My real interest in this game is that I have never seen the AC go up as fast as in this one where I wasn't the one driving it. We're at 90 in ~1200 turns on Marathon, and I've only razed a small handful of cities to contribute. So I'd like to see the world end in fire, as last game I ended it in ice ...

My technique for fising save files is little brains and a lot of brute force. Start deleting civ's and maybe units in the worldbuilder until you don't get a crash (WoC in this case).

I do effectively a 'manual binary search'. That is, say there are 10 civilizations. Start by deleting 5 of them; if the WoC goes away, reload, and try deleting 2 or 3. Keep going. Once you have one Civ left, start deleting units and cities to see if a specific unit or city is causing the problem. Also at some point look at the non-aligned (barbarian) units.

One of the reason that I think I don't have as good a record with the Avatar of Wrath bug is that more than one unit may be causing the bug - my technique doesn't work well under this circumstance.

That is true. My mod is incompatible with saves from base FFH.

What you can do is install FFH again to a new directory (so you effectively have two copies of it), then install my mod over the top of the new installation.

i found an interesting bug. i have nox noctis and it appears to be allowing another team's shadows to stay invisible in my culture. i have a hawk and a unit with perfect sight standing RIGHT next to where the shadows are standing and i still cant see them. while they decimate my mages in my town every turn.

well ... nox noctis doesn't reveal all enemy invisible units - that's Dies Diei

no. i know that. but for some reason i cant see the shadows even though i have a unit with perfect sight standing right next to where they are. i only assume its a glitch with the nox noctis that i have.

I'm not sure. As an experiment, could you do the following:

Save your game.
Go into the worldbuilder, delete Nox Noctis.
See if you can then see the shadows.

You can then reload to get back to where you were.

Otherwise, send me a save file.

Perfect Sight promotion does not work.

I'm pretty sure perfect sight has never worked ... though maybe it worked in Shadow? Fire?

In any case iSeeInvisible (for promotions ) doesn't work.

The only thing that works is defining seeing Invisible_Sea or Invisible_land or Invisible_Animal in the UnitType XML define.

-> I think iInvisible and iSeeInvisible would work ... if the invisible units were iInvisible instead of Invisible_Land.

currently if you make a unit iInvisible it can't be seen by anything ... maybe Perfect Sight would work if invisible units were iInvisible instead of Invisible Land?

(now, iInvisible in unitdefines is different than iInvisible in promotions. iInvisible in promotions works as Invisible_Land)

-> the only way to see Shadows without modding are

1. Hawks

2. Floating Eyes

3. Marksman (the unit)

4. Deis Dei within borders

no other methods, that's it. (although admittedly the first 2 are super easy to get)

Hey.
In my actual game I play the Frozen and one of my main enemies is placed on another landmass.
How can I cross a oceanic/ice tile?

(I only know about two flying options: Fiacra the North Wind and Taranis Ascended(couldn't build him until know))

Thanks for this graet mod...:goodjob:

Not sure, the Combat Log in FFH2 has been broken (in English too) for as long as I can remember. No idea why. Would be nice to have it, of course. :)
