First Face Transplant

In cyberpunk literatureussually the poor have deformed faces and the rich look perfect due to various transplants. To some extent though that is the way we are going anyway, and i dont see things changing. Besides, money buys most things, why not a face too?

*shudder*

This reminds me of vidiians.

Imagine, If someone gets attackedand has thier face horribly disfigured, they ccould go to a "face bank" where spare faces are kept.

On the other hand, :vomit:.

Afaik her face was severely disfigured after a dog attack. Taken into account the depression rates and suicide rates from people with disfigured faces after accidents the transplantation seems the lesser of two evils for her.

Sidenote: When police caught the Austrian bomb brain one policeman lost both hands due to an explosive trap. He got two hands transplantated. Although he has to take medication with sideeffects he is very happy to have working biological hands with superior motoric and the ability to feel instead of artificial ones.

The shape of a face is for the greater part determined by the bones. As long as the bones are still intact, the face-skin transplant won't change the appearance of the face as much as some posters in this thread seem to imply.

Of course you will never look the same, but what's worse; an undamaged face that looks a lot like your original or a heavily scarred/damaged face.

monkies and head transplants... if you can call it usccessful, there's no way to reattach the spinal cord, and they only lived for about a week.

it's interesting that while most organs have hundreds or thousands of flags to mark them as yours, blood has 3, brain has none, and you skin has too many for it to ever be worth looking for a match..

As of right now, prosthetic faces, ears, whatever, will 99 times out of 100 look a heck of a lot better than transplants or complete reformation of the body parts. I wonder if this person ever looked at the possibility of prosthetics, which are a lot less dangerous, a lot less tedius, and a hell of a lot less expensive. Not to mention...they look better if done by an adequate medical artist. (we have many such artists in Minnesota).

I'm glad everything seemed to work out, but sometimes I think people go to the extremes and try to get the most "advanced" medical care possible when really, the most "advanced" medical treatment and the one that will look and work he best are the prosthesis which have been around for quite awhile.

Bah, this is old news. They did it originally in a movie with Nicolas Cage and John Travolta years ago.

Worst. Movie. Ever.

So what becomes of these braindead, now-faceless donors? Are we going to wind up with warehouses of parts donors or something?
