I especially like the amenities focus, allows trying out the new water park in my first game. I wonder if the Golf course also gets bonuses from that. Worth asking on twitter.
The Liberation bonus is good but it's a liberation bonus. Last time I checked the AI barely can conquer a city, so you rarely have opportunity to declare a liberation war, unless cities that you flip through loyalty also count for a liberation war, then you will have more opportunities to use his ability.
So with no warmonger penalty for war of liberation, just declare over and over for the production boost (movement boost is also nice). There's bound to be at least one city state in AI hands.
Wow, so they actually went with golf courses as someone suggested. That's probably fine actually, but I need some time to process this civ. I do like the appearance of Robert, he looks suitably intimidating, and the lion is awesome.
Not so sure about the use for a unique Ranger replacement, but yeah, I need to think about it. They won't need to be hard built, and Spec Ops exist now.
As for Scotland, that much is true! But also look at the Royal Banner of Scotland - or don't, you can see the colors being used by Robert the Bruce himself!
Don't take it too seriously, I was being silly and hyperbolic, but I do think those colors look better on Portugal than on Scotland, that's all. I'll just mod them if it bothers me too much...
Dunno if there's a significant difference in the two shades of blue for them to be distinguishable enough, guess that's up for the devs to figure out. After all, I thought the same of Greece and Portugal back before they announced the latter for BNW.
Well, I'm generally ok with civ abilities being only partially unique. I mean for civilization, which has UI providing amenities, UA depending on happiness and unique Ranger replacement, it's ok to have leader ability being a mix of reused abilities.
They took it in a completely different direction than I expected, decidedly less 'de facto Celtic civ' than I was expecting so there's a good chance of a Gaulish civ down the line now imo.
At 1:16 I noticed a cute detail that I'm sure was there before but I never spotted it while playing. A red balloon from the entertainment district is flying up into the sky. Nice touch.
Well, when I found out they were adding Scotland I said that they had better be well designed and I think they are. They are definitely going to be at least third on my list of favorite civs revealed so far. I really like that we finally have a civ that plays with the happiness bonuses.
I actually laughed out loud when I first heard that they have gold courses (I laughed the second time too), but they are an interesting improvement. I like the fact that all the unique improvements added in this expansion are quite powerful.
The highlander will probably be a lot of fun and the fact that it can upgrade to spec ops will make it viable.
The liberation war thing seems a bit situational and bland and maybe a bit too similar to John Curtain's ability.
Does anyone know if this CB works for liberating city state allies? If the answer is no then that sucks. If the answer is yes I guess they showed the player trying to liberate Hong Kong from Germany in the video so that points to a yes.
Even though I complained that this ability is situational, I should say that sometimes situational abilities are the best ones because they force you to change your playstyle and work hard to reap the full benefits of your bonuses.
I look forward to playing this civ, but who knows, maybe the last two unrevealed civs are even better.
You can only declare a protectorate war if your CS is under attack. If it's conquered then it's too late, though liberating it will give you envoy and diplomacy boosts.
War of Reconquest should also be added to the LUA.
I'm honestly confused why they went with liberation over reconquest. Did I miss a page in Scottish history where they liberated allied cities?
It's funny, for the first time I have strong feelings about the representation of a civ. (I've cared before, don't get me wrong, but didn't feel it as something personal.) Having strong feelings has made me suddenly aware of how hard it must be for Firaxis to get these things right. And this avoided a bunch of my pitfalls (I was totally expecting a faux-medieval, warmongery civ). Well done Firaxis!
Also, the way these things are going, I suspect there won't be an ancient gaulish civ--more likely bet would be some kind of Irish civ in a dlc/future expansion.
