One possible gamble is settling on rice. You get a faster start, you technically don't lose any food until biology and you can see that it will pick up at least one unforested tile in the BFC that could have another resource.
The rice is wet, so he will lose a food: irrigating the rice would give 2 but irrigating a normal grassland only gives 1 . If the rice were dry, the relevant technology is civil service, not biology. Biology is actually irrelvant here.
(at full terrain utilization, a food would be lost no matter what, since you gave up the chance to use the city tile to add +1 , but that's less often relevant)
Oops. didn't see the starting save. Played up to 1000bc..
Spoiler:
SIP. Mining, BW, AH, wheel, pots, writing, alphabet, tech trades. Chopped and whipped out three settlers, I've claimed a chunk of land but I've only got two workers so far . Pyramids in capital is tempting. Started my first GS. Only got one hut for ?60g.
