And I posted on a message board.
Four European countries today imposed restrictions on the movements of cats after a dead cat in Germany was discovered to have been infected with bird flu.

The dead animal was found yesterday on the Baltic island of Ruegen, where more than 100 wild birds have died of the deadly H5N1 strain of the virus. Experts say that the cat probably fell ill after eating an infected bird.

As experts in many European countries took to the airwaves to offer advice to animal owners, alarmed that they might catch the human form of the virus from their pets, the German Government announced that all cats must be kept indoors in bird flu-affected zones. In addition, dogs must be kept on leashes, and all animals watched for signs of strange behaviour.
Hmm…and here I was thinking that Europe had gotten the whole knee-jerk-lets-go-after-the-cats thing out of its system 700 years ago. Guess not. ;)

Ridiculous, they should be able to keep cats on leashes just like dogs.

I wouldn't worry. Cats, being nearly divine, will weather this injustice with the grace and superior attitude that they have weathered all others throughout history.:worship: :worship:

Thinking some more, are they going to round up and kill all the stray cats then?

"In general, people should behave normally with their cats. But in the areas that have been cordoned off, if you have cats that roam free but also come indoors, then I would perhaps refrain from really intensive cuddling for a while."
Awww.... :(
Somehow it never occurred to me that it would jump species to cats. :crazyeye: Thinking not connected.

I doubt it. This is typical knee-jerk reaction by governments to show that they're doing something. It won't really accomplish anything and it won't go any further. And eventually, people will get used to the idea of living with Avian Flu.

The wheel turns.

We had a cat harrass our house for quite awhile (the most important part being poop in the garden ... grrrr). So, I tormented it when possible, and it left us alone.

This winter, we found mice in the foundation (still outside). A few traps later, they were gone. But, now I don't mind the cat so much ...

I have a similar attitude towards mice, we abuse them, but they sure to get cures to all their diseases much earlier than we do. I mean, we've put human brain cells in mice (it worked quite well, thanks, and might help cure Parkinson's) - but it's unlikely we'll do the reverse.

The movement of cats?

Bird-flu my ass. Everyone knows this cat tariff is just a corrupt way of protecting the countries' domestic cat industries.

This whole bird flu thing is amazing. Its a news item that was hyped till it reached a critical mass and took on a life of its own. Its a global case of something being repeated enough times until it becomes true. Bird flu will very soon jump to humans and create a global pandemic. We know this for fact. How do we know that? Because thats what everybody says.

These are the facts i heard:
1. To infect yourself with bird fluw, you basically have to deal with bird feces and even then the odds are extremly low. Cooked meet has 0% of infecting you.
2. Even if a human gets infected, he can't spread the virus.
The only problem for humans is, that there is no known cure, so If the virus mutates, we are up /(%(/ creek.
The bird flue is a disaster for the agricultural industry, but i fail to see how that justifies the media hysteria.

Since there have already been cases of people becoming infected by Strains of flu from animals, the next time this happens in a new population we should hunt down and destroy all humans: man!

Sometimes a disease willl infect a species other than the orginator species, this isn't a very credible story.

Old women keep cats(to keep away rats) these old women are witches and therefore there cats must be satanic familiars. Cat's are often left pawed(sinister) Man this isn't much better than medievil demonisation.
