Football Thread No. 9

Yuck, I would love to see what the league would be like if all the incorrect referee decisons were reversed!

Liverpool would be champions! In their new kit!

I would prefer a system where such decisions can be challenged. That would give teams the right to make certain challenges to decisions and if they get the result then the challenge goes back to them and is reusable. Technology needs to be introduced to help the refs.

42 players? That's way too much, a couple dozen suffice.

Different sport. An AFL team has 18 on the field and four interchange players.

:hammer2: Whoops. but you still have 22 players at most, why have 42 in all?

Lots of development opportunities in the lower grade (it takes a while to turn 18-year-olds into capable top-level Australian Rules footballers), but the big one is depth for covering injuries. There were times last year when Essendon and Fremantle were literally struggling to field a team of fit players, their injury list was so long.

My use of the word convincingly in an earlier post was sarcasm, in case some of you didn't realise.

And you just picked up your first win since that game, :golfclap:.

Doesn't change the fact that Liverpool won...

Whoever's the ref at Wigan should be sanctioned.

4-0, eh? Could a miracle at the Etihad be in the works?

edit: Just saw the Man U result. Day just got a heck of a lot better.

Exciting wednesday of football all over Europe:

- in Germany, in what was effectively the title decider, Borussia Dortmund beat Bayern 1-0. The game wasn't a gem with both teams very cautious. Until the last 10 minutes: Dortmund score and then Robben misses a penalty and at the very last minute of injury time he misses an even better chance with an open goal. Looks like back to back Bundesliga titles for Dortmund.

- in Italy Juventus battled 3rd place Lazio. 37 year old icon Del Piero, rarely used in his 19th and last season at the club, comes on from the bench and scores a great free kick in the 81st minute. Juve maintains a 1 point leas over Milan.

- in England Wigan beat Man Utd and suddenly there's hope again in the other side of Manchester. Mancini however lets us know that "It is finished. Fiver points is too much", that "United have got fantastic spirit. We don't have this spirit" and that he thought United were actually playing tomorrow - "Only at the end of game did I realise they played tonight".

- in France 3rd division side Quevilly qualifies to the french cup final, while Montpellier beat neighbours Marseille away, keeping 1st place and, in the process, continuing to spoil the plans of the arab oil tycoons that own Paris St Germain.

- in Spain Real Madrid visited local rivals Atlético. It was an intense game and an uncomfortable experience for Real Madrid throughout most of the match but then C. Ronaldo came to the rescue with 3 goals (2 of them candidates for goal of the week) and 1 assist. 4-1 in the end in a game where they didn't play well at all (their midfield looks very tired).
Ronaldo now has 40 league goals while Messi has 39. Still 6 games to play and at this rate there's a real possibility that one of them will finish the season with 50 league goals!!

Who needs boring CL midweek games? :goodjob:

Was Cristiano Ronaldo giving this image of "I want to puke" to rival supporters while playing for Manchester United?
First goal was scored by fault, nice goal, but he made a face like saying, "uh yeah man, I am the best" or "I am the only man who can score this kind of goal". Come on, have anybody seen his stadistics in fault kicks this season?
This guy is repulsive. Great football player but repulsive.

Yes the first goal was a goalkeeping mistake. The players were still thinking about the penalty Ronaldo should have received a few mins earlier, plus the goalkeeper is on loan from Chelsea, so in combination he lets the goal in for a bit of favour. Real gave the keeper a few easy saves before halftime to make him feel better.

Anyway Ronaldos freekicks are always straight so Im not surprised he hasnt been scoring many.

Sometimes he even annoys his own supporters...
Do you mean the second goal celebration? That's the one that seemed over the top. But they usually are. He fits well with the current teenage internet culture...

If you watch the replay the ball changes trajectory in mid air. It's bending to the left towards the keeper and then suddenly it drops and goes straight to the corner. These modern balls allow for more and more of this crazy effects. That's what Ronaldo's free kicks are based on. He's not aiming for any corner in the goal, but to put a spin on the ball such that it gets away from the keeper at the last moment.
The other thing he tries to do is, which I think was his free kick trademark back when he scored a lot more of those, is to put a lot of topspin (in tennis terms) on the ball. It looks like it will go way over but then, at the last moment, it comes downwards.

While his free kick technique was much better while he was in England, his long range shots from open play, which are based on the same type of shots, are working to great effect.

Hmmm, no, in Spain it is not a internet culture, it is an "urban tribe", They are called "Cani". Go to google.es and check it in images under your responsability

:)
Yeah, they're everywhere. Internet, real life, etc.

So we should get rid of Spain for good measure. :mischief:

At least the Spanish footballe teams are proving that they're not part of an overblown second Scotland but that they can hold their own against other countries, it's just that Barça and Mandril are too much for them at the moment.
