Forgetting sarah palin

John Stewart's about the best journalist in the US these days.

No, not really. His show is ok, but that does not make him "about the best journalist in the US".

Well, he's the most entertaining, at least.

Take it as an indication of the esteem I hold the rest of them in ;) Did you see him take on Kramer?

Yea it was cool, but there are plenty of journalists doing journalisty things in dangerous parts of the world and doing a pretty damn good job.

Is Colbert a journalist? I enjoy his show more anyway :p

There is courage out there. I grant you that. But even among them it's getting rarer and rarer to to the heart of the story below what the powers that be what shown.

The problem is that talk show hosts like David Gregory pretend they're "journalists." There are tons of good journalists out there, but they're nowhere near TV. So you get one Washington, D.C. version of Jerry Springer and two paid P.R. men yelling at each other. The problem is that the celebrity pundits don't actually know anything, and don't care about it. Sure, they could have real journalists on their shows to inform themselves and their viewers about important issues, but that'd be boring. (The quotes of supposed "journalists" expressing their boredom with actual issues are plentiful.)

One thing I will say is that Jon Stewart is definitely the best interviewer on TV. The simple fact that if someone utters something false on his show he calls them on it (as he did with Barney Frank, recently) puts him light-years ahead of the likes of Gregory, Matthews, and Russert (who specialized in inane "gotcha" questions while allowing government guests to "control the message.").

He doesn't exactly play hardball with most of his guests though. I wish he wouldn't let a lot of them off the hook so much.

Uncomfortable tension isn't good for ratings. At least, not all the time.
