Fox10 - The Real Thing

I was almost starting to play when another question came around:
Which wonders ?

The GLib is surely a must. I would go for the Colossus too, following Ruff's advise.

Will wait for several hours for your input then play.

If you settle the the GE, then there isn't much time for building wonders other than TGLibrary and Colossus. Parthenon, TGLighthouse, ToA are all non-essential wonders. I would rather get the barracks, lighthouse, monastery and other infrastructure up. This is emperor level, and it is sort of continents where the AI has significantly more land to work on than Fox09. They will be catching up very fast. But if you must build one more, I would rather go for the TGLighthouse. GM points is very nice for an OCC, and TGLighthouse falling into the wrong hands would be fatal.

Tech wise, I would switch to sailing first to enable lighthouse after Aesthetic, then continue on to get Literature and Drama, then mathematics, CoL, CS. Drama is to get a theatre up fast to pave the way for Globe. Maths is to get the Hanging Gardens, and also requisite for CS. CoL is another requisite for CS (we don't need Caste while we are happy-limited, so I would get CoL last).

Our 5 national wonders would mostly be the same as previous OCC games, the two givens are: Globe, and Oxford. Almost must-have is Nat Epic. Up to compete for the last two slots are Heroic Epic, Nat Park, Ironworks.

--

Cabledawg has convinced me lately how powerful National Park is at OCC. I've played some OCC SP games now and have to say that production is not the issue of concern in most setups, but health is. Even with losing the 50% bonus from coal you can still manage very solid production. So my vote goes for National Epic, Ironworks and the National Park in this game.

Your tech and wonder choices seem fine. Agreed. :) (Although at SP I'd probably rush the Great Lighthouse with the GE and build the Temple of Artemis because we have Marble).

What's great with the OCCs is that, even if you have seven games in parallel (the WHEOOH mode ;)), it takes a few minutes to get the turnset done.

Given the irregular number left by my illustrious predecessor, I decided to round up things and stop after 12. It was also a natural breaking point.

So, what are the highlights ?

First, the GE was invited to live in Cuzco:

Seems that he has managed to bring some 'weird' friends, as two turns later we got:

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, started Sailing after Aesthetics. And the build is set on the Colossus.

The bandits went away (where? The island is so big they can't hide forever) after this single turn of havoc.

Sailing done in turn 122, Litterature started.

Five turns later:

A fine boost in our research ability.

And on the final turn (130), we finally discovered :

The lighthouse just finished.

Options are:
- GLib in 15 or GLight in 9
- Drama is up in 11
- We have a potential GSci upcoming in 14

And the joke (hopefully it wasn't part of a former Fox game - whip me if it was):

Spoiler :

Q: Why did the blonde have tire tread marks on her back?
Spoiler :

A: From crawling across the street when the sign said "don't walk".

Despite what I say, I would be inclined to go for TGLighthouse first (9 turns is fast). +2 trade routes per city in the narrow continents map is huge bonus for AI.

We would also want to consider IW soon, since we know that there would be iron. If it appears on any mined hills, it would be a good prod bonus.

Shyuhe is UP

For denial purpose, the GLight is a good and cheap way to go.
We are in 750BC, I don't think there is a way we could lose the GLib at this point.

IW is only a few turns, so it can be a good thing pre-drama.

I'm not sure that the GGLightHouse is a big gamebreaker here... all the AI are in the same continent, so the trade routes will not be as big as in Fox 9. But I must reckon that the GM GPP paired with the Collosus ones can prove themselfs very handy in the future... So ,if we have time, why not :p ?

It is narrow continents map, the few maps I rolled for testing, there are a few continents and all land tiles are at most 3 tiles away from sea, so we can safely bet 90% of AI cities will be coastal. I can't overstress the denial value of GLighthouse.

Shyuhe, when are you coming back? If it is 3 or 4 days away, I can always arrange for cabledawg (who also asked for a skip earlier on) to play first then you.

--

I'll be able to play on the 10th. I think a skip is the easiest solution.

I agree that it's very unlikely we'll lose the GL. Aesthetics is not a high AI priority so there isn't much concern there. The lighthouse generally goes in the BC years so we'd better try that one if we're going for the denial (which I think is worth it).

I played 19 turns...felt like 2....Pressing enter can be fun if you do it nude.

Preturn....IW is selected...its 8 turns. I start Great Lighthouse

138--->IW in, we have iron. Math is next for Hanging
Gardens
Civ4ScreenShotf101.jpg

139--->GLighthouse done, Great Library started

140--->We grow to 10. I just realized we have a religion and no Mono. Thats a 25% production boost. Were you guys planning on trading for it?...lol

143--->We get an academy making scientist
Civ4ScreenShotf102.jpg

144--->Mono in and I switch to Org Rel

150--->Math in

Selected COL next but no beakers invested yet. Theres alot of routes we could take right now.
Civ4ScreenShotf103.jpg

COL--->CS is strong
Drama --->Music...free GA
Med--->Theology....monastaries and were gonna need Theology at some point, might as well found the religion and get another monastary. We need to build the AP so noone else does. 20& extra research from 2 monastaries is pretty strong and will make a subsequent techs cheaper.

EL Jokeo
Spoiler :
When I was young I used to pray for a bike, then I realized that God doesn't work that way, so I stole a bike and prayed for forgiveness.

Great progress, an academy already before the GLib is nice, the wonder alone would bring in equivalent of 3 scientist.

Research wise, I am more inclined to go for Med (it's cheap), Drama, then CoL->CS. Not too keen abt the free artist. Why are we worried abt the AP? Sure, the +2 hammer per building is nice, but that's abt all it brings. The wonder does seems too expensive for it.

We would want compass (+2 health) and optics (Earth-is-round + force AI into war-mode) sooner rather than later as well.

Prod wise, I think it is time for Nat Epic to be erected. If we go Med first, we can get monastery up as well. We seems to be missing a barracks (?) ...

Agree on the AP. We have a religion already so we won't get any natural spread from an AI religion. So we can't lose to a diplo vote. I like meditation after CoL as we can get a 20% bonus with 2 monasteries. Drama sounds good after those two techs since we'll be happy capped after the aqueduct + Hanging Gardens come in (or is it late for the wonder?)

We don't need the barracks until we start making military units...

Exactly my point on AP ... which is why I said the AP benefit is only +2 hammers.

 Oh, we still do not have the aqueduct and THG?

Boy, then the Nat Epic can wait. Since THG is going to push us one pop past happy-limit, I am most likely gonna whip the aqueduct.

True abt barracks, but it is better to get it build while we have the luxury of building it and not units (ofcourse provided there is nothing more important to build, like THG).

--

EDIT: we are most likely not gonna be founding Confused, CoL is a pretty favourite tech for Emperor AI. Has it not already been founded?

Isnt the AP hammer bonus 6? 2 from a temple, 2 from a monastary, and 2 from a cathedral. I also have no idea how those hammers are converted through a forge, ORG REL, factory. Either way, 6 hammers is like 3 settled engineers. It could also mean the difference in making a unit in 1 turn or 2 down the road. And how much is it really worth for denial purposes.

Exactly my point on AP ... which is why I said the AP benefit is only +2 hammers.

Lurker's Comment:
Actually you get +2 :hammers: per religious building. So with a Cathedral/Mono/Temple, that's +6 base :hammers:
Not saying it's worth it either way. There is alot of other stuff you guys obviously want to build. But just felt like being pendantic here. Also great games, these AW games have been pretty entertaining.

We are hopelessly huge. No, this isn't the joke. It's true.

Well, at least according to Lord McCauley.

Fox10-BC0335-Hoplessly-Large.jpg

The Great Library of Alexandria is built in Cuzco:

Fox10-BC0335-GLib.jpg

Cuts CoL from 9 to 7 turns. Nice.

I promptly whipped the aqueduct, and some 9 turns later, the Hanging Garden of Babylon is also built in Cuzco.

Fox10-BC0185-HG.jpg

Thereafter, I got us Mediation and built the Monastery. Also started Drama. Now, what to go for next. Parthenon is still available, but I think Nat Epic is better (50% vs 100%, expires with chemistry vs no expiry date ... ofcourse there is the minor detail of one is unique and the other is not )

Fox10-BC0140-city.jpg

I think we should finish CS, and build the theatre + Globe while doing that. Then revolt to Caste and Bureaucracy. Thereafter, I will suggest the compass (harbor is good with Globe coming on line) and then a Education beeline.

Spoiler :
Airman Jackson was assigned to the induction center, where he advised new recruits about their government benefits, especially their GI insurance.

It wasn’t long before Captain Haverty noticed that Airman Jackson was having a staggeringly high success-rate, selling insurance to nearly 100% of the recruits he advised.

Rather than asking him about this, the Captain stood at the back of the room and listened to Jackson’s sales pitch.

Jackson explained the basics of GI Insurance to the new recruits, and then said, “If you are killed in a battle and have a GI Insurance, the government has to pay $200,000 to your beneficiaries. But, if you don’t have a GI insurance and get killed in the battle, the government only has to pay a maximum of $6000.”

“Now,” he concluded, “which group do YOU think they’re gonna send into battle first?”
