Confirmed by Nathan Phelps, son of Fred Phelps:

I've learned that my father, Fred Phelps, Sr., pastor of the "God Hates F*gs" Westboro Baptist Church, was ex-communicated from the "church" back in August of 2013. He is now on the edge of death at Midland Hospice house in Topeka, Kansas.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. Terribly ironic that his devotion to his god ends this way. Destroyed by the monster he made.

I feel sad for all the hurt he's caused so many. I feel sad for those who will lose the grandfather and father they loved. And I'm bitterly angry that my family is blocking the family members who left from seeing him, and saying their good-byes.

I wonder if his funeral will be picketed or attended by those that he most hated during his life? Would surely be a fitting and ironic end for someone so hated. Interestingly, he was ex-communicated from his own church. Wonder if we'll ever hear anything about the specifics of this.

Will update this thread when he succumbs to old-age or whatever is destroying his mortal body.

No need to picket it, sounds like he will get the ultimate punishment, an empty funeral. If he was excommunicated from his church I cant imagine they will go.

I'm baffled. What difference does it make to me who is or is not at my funeral? No one goes to a funeral for the benefit of the deceased.

Anyway, what's Fred dying of, and why has his church expelled him? Has he been secretly gay all this time?

From what I remember Nathan is a grandson who left the family and has since been pretty vocal and public about them.

I think the quote useless put in the OP is very moving. He's still a person, with family who care about him, and he might be scared and in pain. No fun for anyone. I really hope we don't see any victory dances from the people who he worked so hard to anger.

It's a shame that people use religion to divide people. Then again, I suppose people will use just about any tool to divide, no?

Now is the chance for us to show we are better than him. But really, what are the odds of that happening?

All in all, I suspect the guy was just the world's greatest troll. He used his church to provoke and then sue people. While I have no figures to prove it, I suspect it was a nice money-spinner. Does that make him worse, or better from the man I suspect he pretended to be? If he was not really a homophobe, but simply a conman, what are we to think of him then?

I'm not sure I'd understand a logic which states:
  • Picketing funerals is wrong.
  • We should picket this guy's funeral.

With that in mind, I wonder how many bikers will show up to do just that.

Fred Phelps never harmed anybody with his picketing, he just provided people with something to hate.

I hope he ends his life in a state of happiness.

Will I be infracted if I celebrate publicly here?

Can't say I'm surprised that the 'leaders' of the 'god hates fags' thing are lawyers. I mean, I think even they don't legitimately believe the BS they spew, but they just want people to beat them up/make threats, so they can so them in court and gain some cash.

Even the KKK, an actual (real) hate group, considers these guys to be lunies.

Wait for someone to picket your loved ones' funerals and see if it bothers you or not.

Do you actually think being a lawyer requires brains/debate skills of any sort?

Likely much more brains and charisma than an average IDF soldier.

Then why do Arab TV movies often involve the hero being seduced and eventually betrayed by a beautiful Mossad agent named Esther? Seems like they're just being coy when they vow to drive us out of Palestine.

Presumably because Arab TV movies make a difference between secret agents and soldiers.
