The sugars in those drinks are suboptimal for sports performance or recovery. They shuttle sugars into your liver, where they are stored and converted ... instead of providing sugars to the muscle cells - where they're needed.

According to a bottle I have of each, they have the same carbs, potassium, and sodium.
Now as for that 'true' athletes comment. I ran 41km today. Without the electrolytes in the energy drinks I was consuming I most certainly would have collapsed from a severe hypotonic state. The sugars in them probably kept me going another 2 or 3 km. So kindly can the ignorance please.
Oh, and for the record "athletics" as a category refers to distance running, cross country, and track.
