Gatorade or Powerade?

As a person who plays three sports, and exercises all year, I'd have to say Gatorade is better both ... and health/performance.

That's ridiculous. They both have the same amount of carbs, sodium, and potassium. Its in your head.

hate both...

Im pretty sure Powerade has more sugars. And everyone knows gatorade is better for you before, during, and after exercising than Powerade.

That's like saying heroin is better for you than crystal meth ...

The sugars in those drinks are suboptimal for sports performance or recovery. They shuttle sugars into your liver, where they are stored and converted ... instead of providing sugars to the muscle cells - where they're needed.

Which is why H2O is still the liquid of choice among true athletes, not posers that walk around their street for 15 minutes and call it "exercising". But between the two "evils" gatorade is better, and I think it has more electrolytes in it than Powerade, if Powerade has any at all.

Lemonade! :smug:

Do you have a source for that?

According to a bottle I have of each, they have the same carbs, potassium, and sodium.

Now as for that 'true' athletes comment. I ran 41km today. Without the electrolytes in the energy drinks I was consuming I most certainly would have collapsed from a severe hypotonic state. The sugars in them probably kept me going another 2 or 3 km. So kindly can the ignorance please. Oh, and for the record "athletics" as a category refers to distance running, cross country, and track.

I prefer a local brand called Pripps Energy. I only drink it for the taste. If I go to the gym after a long time without exercise I might bring some as well, because I can get dizzy afterwards.

A recent study (I wish I could remember where it was) showed that chocolate milk (or regular milk) was execellent for atheletes because of the calcium and other minerals, and it gives you some calories to burn.

anyone remember isostar?

anyway, energy drinks are a farce. just eat healthy and drink plenty of high quality of H2O (the bottled variety). plus, they taste horrid.

I think El_Machinae is right insofar as Dextrose is the ideal recovery sugar for your muscles. Lifters and Bodybuilders will consume it as a supplement after their workout. I'm just learning about all this myself. My nutritionist is doing his PhD in Bio-Chem and has me taking dextrose.

I've never drank Gatorade, so I don't know the makeup of the sugars and how they pertain to marathon running etc.

Sucrose is a dipeptide composed of glucose and fructose. It is cleaved in the gut, and they are released into the blood stream. The glucose can be taken straight up by the muscle, but the fructose is taken up by the liver and then transformed into glucose. At that stage, depending on insulin levels, it is either stored in the liver or released. Chances are that it will be stored in the liver.

I've heard Gatorade is better for you because it has less sugar, I drink it everyday with lunch. And for those who say it's bad for you, you may be right but it's not as bad as beer or cola.

Agreed, but Powerade has a tad more sugar than Gatorade, but we can agree that they have similar performance rates, not making a world of difference either way.

Well obviously 41Km runners such as yourself are going to eventually need a resupply of electrolytes, because you are exercising for so much longer than any other typical sport. But for sports where a "game" is being played, the athletes do not need to drink the energy drinks during the game, and should not due to it slowing you down. Water is the better option in these cases. But for yours, of course, you needed an energy drink because you exercised longer than most athletes.

Oh, and for the record "athletics" as a category refers to distance running, cross country, and track.

Not at all true here in the US. Athletes are those that compete in a sport such as football, soccer, baseball, lacrosse, swimming, tennis, hockey, basketball, or crosscountry or track, not limited strictly to running sports.

I don't really care which one I get. Just which one gives me more for a dollar, and still have decent quality. (no dirt or fungus in it!)
