Gay book ban

I can understand the whole debate about gay marriage but this. This would ban several great classic books.

Moreover, does anyone really believe the ‘gay agenda’ bs.

This is as dumb as the stupid evolution sticker in my mind.

"It sounds like Nazi book burning to me," said SPLC spokesman Mark Potok.

Mr. Potok has a point.

What the fork? Smeg?

I wish I had a really long arm so I could slap this guy.

what a complete tube.

thats just silly to be honest.

I wonder if he was the same guy who wanted to ban the word Hello because it had the word hell in it. Think he was from Alabama too

Any chance you could quote the article for those of us that dislike registering with newspaper websites?

MONTGOMERY - An Alabama lawmaker who sought to ban gay marriages now wants to ban novels with gay characters from public libraries, including university libraries.

A bill by Rep. Gerald Allen, R-Cottondale, would prohibit the use of public funds for "the purchase of textbooks or library materials that recognize or promote homosexuality as an acceptable lifestyle." Allen said he filed the bill to protect children from the "homosexual agenda."

"Our culture, how we know it today, is under attack from every angle," Allen said in a press conference Tuesday.

Allen said that if his bill passes, novels with gay protagonists and college textbooks that suggest homosexuality is natural would have to be removed from library shelves and destroyed.

"I guess we dig a big hole and dump them in and bury them," he said.

A spokesman for the Montgomery-based Southern Poverty Law Center called the bill censorship.

"It sounds like Nazi book burning to me," said SPLC spokesman Mark Potok.

Allen pre-filed his bill in advance of the 2005 legislative session, which begins Feb. 1.

If the bill became law, public school textbooks could not present homosexuality as a genetic trait and public libraries couldn't offer books with gay or bisexual characters.

When asked about Tennessee Williams' southern classic "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof," Allen said the play probably couldn't be performed by university theater groups.

Allen said no state funds should be used to pay for materials that foster homosexuality. He said that would include nonfiction books that suggest homosexuality is acceptable and fiction novels with gay characters. While that would ban books like "Heather has Two Mommies," it could also include classic and popular novels with gay characters such as "The Color Purple," "The Picture of Dorian Gray" and "Brideshead Revisted."

The bill also would ban materials that recognize or promote a lifestyle or actions prohibited by the sodomy and sexual misconduct laws of Alabama. Allen said that meant books with heterosexual couples committing those acts likely would be banned, too.

His bill also would prohibit a teacher from handing out materials or bringing in a classroom speaker who suggested homosexuality was OK, he said.

Allen has sponsored legislation to make a gay marriage ban part of the Alabama Constitution, but it was not approved by the Legislature.

Ken Baker, a board member of Equality Alabama, a gay rights organization, said Allen was "attempting to become the George Wallace of homosexuality."

Aside from the moral debates, the bill could be problematic for library collections, said Jaunita Owes, director of the Montgomery City-County Library, which is a few blocks from the Alabama Capitol.

"Half the books in the library could end up being banned. It's all based on how one interprets the material," Owes said.
.... sigh ....

I guess I can even if you don’t have to sign up.

This provision will ensure that it will never pass. There may not be a significant percentage of homosexual or "liberal" legislators in the Alabama statehouse, but I bet that there are enough of them that are privately into something other than the freakin' missionary position that they'll see this bill for what it is.

We can hope, anyway.

They've got a law banning anything but missionary?

No, they've got a law banning contact between sexual organs and mouth/anus of people who are not married. I was exaggerating a wee bit, but in my opinion they might as well go all the way - once you're telling consenting adults what bits they can touch and what bits they can't, there's really no point in holding back.

But extra-marital vaginal sex is not disallowed? Consistency is nice ... :crazyeye:

It is disallowed (class-B misdemeanor) if it is only partially extra-marital (a.k.a. adultery):

And in doing some googling on this, I found an interesting note:

http://www.peoples-law.org/family/Unmarried Cohabs/cohabs legal status - wlc.htm#fornication

Sodomy

Thirteen states make it a crime for an unmarried man and woman to engage in consensual sodomy in private (which is defined as oral or anal sex or both): Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Utah, and Virginia fall into this category. A handful of states only prohibit sodomy between individuals of the same sex.

Is your state among the 13?

Brideshead Revisited? Ban it? No, they can't, they wouldn't!

Actually, it bans the same contact between those that are married. Basically, it say vaginal sex is the only proper sex. Marital or not. (at least in Louisiana)

Wow, I'm soooooo glad I don't live in the USA. :o

Making it illeagal to have certain types of sex????

I guess 'Land of the free' was redefined by the religous zealots. The most ironic part is that some of your most famous founders were very anti-religion, and very much in to the concept of liberalism.

Ah, Alabama. What is it with this state?

They repealed laws banning inter-racial marriage only 4 years ago.
Recently they voted *against* removing the part of their constitution which advocates racial segregation in schools (granted it had been superceded by other laws, but still, you'd think that in any modern Western society it would be a slam-dunk...)
Hmm...I didn't know homosexuality was illegal in Alabama? I'm not surprised.
And wasn't Alabama also the place with that 10 Commandments judge? I'm pretty sure it is because I remember reading him being one of the leaders of a movement for keeping the racial segregation laws, as well as a former KKK member.

I guess Alabama is not a state I ever want to visit being non-white, non-Christian and non-homophobic.

At least this guy has the guts to put his money where his mouth is, very rare in politians these days. I hestitate to agree or disagree with his proposal however, simply because I do not not know where the man's heart is. Some of what he proposes seems alittle....extreme. But I agree that Schools have no business promoting Homosexuality. They should be totally neutral(Never mentioning) the issue.

Umm. Never talking about something ISN'T being neutral. It's what they call DENIAL. ;)
