Gay Nominee Ambassador Appointment To Dominican Republic Causes A Stir

The US government did nothing in 2002. What a load of rubbish. OMG, there's an attempted coup in a foreign country. It MUST be America behind it!

To be fair, it's not like that's outside of the realm of possibilities.

Meddling in? No, of course not. But that's a long way from the era of the Banana Wars.

Arbenz in Guatemala in the Eisenhower Administration
Aristide in Haiti in the late 80s
contras in Nicaragua in the 80s
Mexico in the 20s
Honduras right now
Allende in Chile in the 70s
Cuba in the 60s (Bay of Pigs)

These are the obvious ones off the top of my head. Things like the War on Drugs are fairly transparent excuses for deeper military/political involvement in Latin America as well.

You wouldn't say that if Obama were sending a butterfly that is halfway between Hank Azaria's character and Nathan Lane's from Birdcage to Saudi Arabia.

I'm not denying US influence in Latin America but questioning how much this is the personal discretion of the ambassador and if most people are familiar enough with the ambassador to know his/her name, etc.

With regards to the Chilean coup, I was under the impression that although we were perfectly fine with Pinochet taking power, we didn't do a whole lot to bring about his coup.

School of the Americas, Aji, School of the Americas.

Is this one of the ambassadors that's actually a foreign service expert, or just one who gave a lot of money to the President?

You certainly have some odd notions regarding US-backed coups that many historians consider to be common knowledge.

Do you think it is a coincidence that so many democratically elected sovereign governments just happen to suffer military coups after the government nationalizes US companies which have been exploiting their natural resources?
